The German online pet supply store Zooplus is launching a subscription program in Belgium and the Netherlands. In total, the Zooplus subscription model will now be available in 8 different countries.

Zooplus aims to gradually expand this model to all the remaining markets in which it currently operates. According to the retailer, it has online stores in 30 different European countries. In 2023, it launched a flexible subscription program in Germany and Austria.

Now, the subscription program is also available to customers in the Netherlands and Belgium. With the subscription, customers select their favorite pet products from a large selection of items. They can indicate their preferred shipping frequency, after which the product will be automatically and regularly delivered to them, in a way similar to what Amazon offers.

This is especially useful for products such as pet food or litter, as owners need to order these frequently. The program can be adjusted or paused at any time.

“The launch of our subscription model in the Netherlands marks a new milestone in delivering on our ambition to become the ultimate destination for pet parents across Europe. By offering the best choice and most convenient service, we aim to elevate our customers’ experience and drive further loyalty”, said Geoffrey Lefebvre, CEO of Zooplus.

The booming pet market

According to market research by Businesswire, the global pet care e-commerce market is expected to reach a value of $87.43 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 12.49% from 2020 to 2027. And it is assumed that nearly one-third of global pet care sales will be made through e-commerce by 2026.

Another report by Statista shows that the global pet care e-commerce market size was valued at USD 20.75 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.3% from 2020 to 2027.

Technological advancements coupled with rising pet adoption are primary growth drivers for this market. For instance, mobile adaptivity allows better customer experience and single-touch purchase options. Increasing internet penetration is bolstering the smartphone-using population across the world. Rising mobile adaptivity, incorporation of single-touch purchase options, and user-friendly web pages have increased the popularity of e-commerce websites.

Zooplus reached 2.1 billion euros in revenues in 2021, increasing its total sales from 2.09 billion in 2020. This shows a 16% growth even when the company has lost part of its market share to Fressnapf.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Popular German online pet supply store Zooplus has increased its total sales to 2.09 billion euros in 2021. This is a 16 percent growth when compared to a year before. The company lost market share to Fressnapf, but expects to increase sales to 2.3 billion euros this year.

Zooplus takeover and withdraw from the stock market

Last year, the popular German online pet supply store suffered a takeover by Hellmand & Friendman and EQT, this takeover prompted Zooplus to make even more changes, among them that its share had to be withdrawn from trading in the stock market.

Despite that, the company has announced plans to double its revenue by 2025 and return to the stock market with a higher valuation.

Consolidating their home country

Yet, Zooplus has been able to further consolidate its presence in what we could call, its home markets: the company increased its sales by 15 percent to 455 million euros in Germany, in Switzerland 80 million euros, and in Austria another 58 million euros in sales.

The company released these figures in a sales update for its shareholders.

Zooplus sales reach 100 million in Europe

It also generated sales of over 100 million euros in 8 different countries, among them Belgium and Spain, which are relatively new markets for Zooplus.

Competition in the house

While Zooplus reached 2.1 billion euros in revenues in 2021 and is still growing significantly, it has lost some of its market share to Fressnapf. The omnichannel German competitor in pet supplies was able to generate 246 million euros in online sales last year.

And some critics insist that the pet food company has not been aggressive enough to secure the German market. Something that could weigh heavily on them nowadays when customer acquisition is so expensive and customer retention has become fundamental for any successful e-commerce strategy.
Do you want to keep your customers happy and not lose them to your competition? Well, the best thing you can do is have an effective Customer Care strategy.
