Over the past five years, TikTok has experienced explosive global expansion, solidifying its position as one of the most influential social media platforms. With its engaging short-form video content and sophisticated algorithm, the app has attracted billions of users worldwide, driving its success in markets across North America, Europe, and Asia.

However, this rapid growth has also sparked government concerns regarding data privacy, misinformation, and national security. As a result, several countries have imposed bans or restrictions on TikTok, citing threats ranging from cyber risks to social instability. While some prohibitions have been lifted after negotiations or policy changes, others remain in effect, creating an ongoing debate over the platform's future accessibility in different regions.

TikTok bans in different regions

However, success in SEA was not without challenges. Indonesia temporarily banned the platform, citing monopoly concerns, while the Philippines imposed strict regulations. A relaunch in the Philippines, through a merger with Tokopedia (under the brand name “Shopedia”), demonstrated TikTok's resilience.

In 2023, TikTok Shop expanded to the United States, but plans for a wider rollout in Europe faced delays. Challenges in SEA and high operating costs in Europe are cited as possible reasons for these difficulties. Even so, the service launched in Spain and Ireland in late 2024.

Here is a table summarizing notable TikTok bans, including the region, year of implementation, and current status:

Region

Year

Status

India

2020

Not lifted

Indonesia

2018

Lifted

Pakistan

2020

Lifted

Afghanistan

2022

Not lifted

Somalia

2023

Not lifted

Nepal

2023

Lifted

Albania

2025

Not lifted

United States

2025

Not lifted

India: In June 2020, India imposed a nationwide ban on TikTok due to national security concerns amid border tensions with China. The ban remains in effect.

Indonesia: In July 2018, Indonesia temporarily banned TikTok, citing concerns over content promoting pornography and blasphemy. The ban was lifted after TikTok agreed to censor inappropriate content.

Pakistan: Between October 2020 and November 2021, Pakistan imposed and subsequently lifted four bans on TikTok, primarily due to concerns over immoral and indecent content.

Afghanistan: In April 2022, the Taliban government banned TikTok, stating that the platform was misleading the younger generation. The ban remains in place.

Somalia: In August 2023, Somalia banned TikTok, Telegram, and 1XBet, citing concerns over the spread of horrific content and misinformation. The ban has not been lifted.

Nepal: In November 2023, Nepal banned TikTok due to concerns over social harmony being disrupted by app misuse. The ban was lifted in August 2024 after an agreement between TikTok and the government to monitor misuse.

Albania: In December 2024, Albania announced a one-year ban on TikTok following a fatal incident linked to the platform. The ban is currently in effect.

United States: In January 2025, the United States implemented a ban on TikTok due to security concerns related to its Chinese ownership. The ban remains in place.

What about TikTok Shop?

TikTok, the social media giant owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, Ltd., has been steadily expanding its shopping functionality, TikTok Shop, with ambitious plans for 2025.

Launched in April 2021, TikTok Shop integrates e-commerce directly into the app, allowing users to buy products while watching videos and live streams.

Originally inspired by Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, this functionality has grown to cater to a global audience. With 1.6 billion registered users as of April 2024, the potential reach of this functionality is immense.

TikTok Shop debuted in Indonesia in 2021, followed by the UK, marking its entry into international e-commerce. By 2023, the platform had become a significant player in Southeast Asia (SEA), with markets such as Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia contributing significantly to the $20 billion in GMV (Gross Merchandise Value).

TikTok Shop plans for a global expansion

TikTok Shop has set ambitious goals for 2025. With projections to reach $75 million in GMV, more than triple 2023 revenues, ByteDance is focusing on new markets in Europe, including Germany, France and Italy, while exploring opportunities in Latin America, starting with Mexico, where pilot tests are already underway.

The global expansion could further increase the appeal of TikTok, allowing content creators to monetize their platforms more effectively. However, uncertainties remain. In the United States, the ongoing Supreme Court case on a possible ban on TikTok under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act represents a significant risk, which could hamper the growth of TikTok Shop in one of its largest markets.

Amidst the company's challenges and strategic moves, many TikTok users are eagerly awaiting the global expansion of TikTok Shop. If successful, the platform could redefine online commerce, offering a perfect blend of entertainment and e-commerce.

As ByteDance extends its reach, it remains to be seen whether TikTok will be able to navigate the regulatory, economic, and competitive hurdles to cement its status as a global e-commerce leader.

TikTok faces a hard deadline in January. A U.S. federal appeals court has upheld the initial order forcing the social network TikTok to sever all ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, by January 2025, because “this relationship poses a threat to national security and the security of Americans, whose data could end up in the hands of the Asian powerhouse without permission.

The three judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia District have disregarded TikTok's request to appeal the matter by insisting that the initial order against the platform—translated into a law signed in April by U.S. President Joe Biden and endorsed by the U.S. Congress—“withstands constitutional scrutiny.”

“The First Amendment exists to protect free speech in the United States,” Justice Douglas Ginsburg has made known in expressing the court's majority opinion on this order. “The Government has acted solely to protect that freedom from a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary's ability to collect data on persons in the United States,” adds the brief in a decision that will almost certainly take this case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

TikTok bets on the Supreme Court

If TikTok decides to appeal to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country will have to rule before the order goes into effect on January 19. If it decides to hear the case, the order will be suspended until a final decision. A statement published by the company on its website immediately after the rejection of its appeal confirms that TikTok intends to present its case before the Supreme Court, “a court with a proven track record of protecting Americans' right to free speech".

“We hope it will do the same in this important constitutional matter. Unfortunately, the TikTok ban was conceived and pushed based on inaccurate, faulty, and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people. The TikTok ban, unless stopped, will silence the voices of more than 170 million Americans here in the U.S. and around the world on January 19, 2025,” TikTok denounces in that statement.

According to The New York Times, civil penalties would be imposed on app stores that distribute or update TikTok, such as Apple's and Google's. The app is already on millions of phones in the United States, but restricting updates will likely undermine users' ability to access it. This would be complemented by a measure prohibiting web hosting companies from helping distribute the app.
