This year will serve as a testing phase for the U-Elcome project, with several simulations being organized in different urban centers across Spain, Italy, and France, potentially paving the way for commercial drone deliveries starting next year.

In Villaverde, Madrid, Spain, the city's new mobility sandbox is being established, covering a 20-kilometer area and becoming the largest technological testing ground in Europe.

\n\n\n\n

The term \"sandbox\" refers to a closed and secure testing environment where controlled technological innovation trials can occur, considering population testing before commercialization. This is especially crucial for drones, considering their intended commercial purpose.

\n\n\n\n

All these operations will be connected to the U-Space platform. Various drone service operators will be considered in the future, and Enaire (the Spanish air navigation manager) will provide accurate air traffic information.

U-Elcome project Drones

\n\n\n\n

As announced by Amazon a few years ago, the main goal is for these drones to perform simple delivery services within three years, and we are steadily approaching the realization of this vision.

\n\n\n\n

The new simulations are part of the U-Elcome project, led by the European organization EUROCONTROL, with an investment of 16 million euros. The project involves 51 European partners.

Based on the initial test results, it is estimated that by mid-year, further advancements will be made, expanding the trials to cities for emergency missions, transportation of medical supplies between hospitals, small cargo transportation from ports to specific warehouses, military tasks, and more.
