E-commerce China bigger than the US's this year

China lampsEven though China's economy is not growing as hard as it did a few years ago, online sales are still rising faster than those of the US, according to figures from the Chinese government.

The total turnover of online sales will grow to 1.3 trillion dollars in 2018. That is an increase of 23% since 2017. The total retail sector, including sales through physical stores, was worth 5.6 trillion dollars, 9% more than a year ago.

Until now, the American online market has been bigger but that seems to change. According to research institute eMarketer, China would be able to claim first place in the course of this year. End of this year, China might already have a market share of 55.8% of global online trading.

Within the online trade in China, Alibaba, including marketplaces Taobao and Tmall, is by far the market leader with 53.3%. JD.com claims the second place.
