The event included over 400 brands, retailers, online pure plays and technology vendors.

The conference was highly insightful with 100+ thought leading speaker sessions and 45+ peer-to-peer discussions. Amongst this were sessions with Adyen, Tmall, Crocs, Lóreal, Google and many others. Topics like the fragmented retail landscape, customer engagement in modern times, and technologies were a big part of the event.

Though the market appears to be fragmented, eTail Asia 2019 addresses the exciting opportunities on how to win over Chinese consumers. Talks were about how to adapt to local nuances and create a multifaceted digital ecosystem to drive e-commerce sales. If anything, 2019 will be a year of metamorphosis for the industry. Especially for players who aspire to succeed as an e-commerce brand in an era of dominant e-tailers. As customer engagement is difficult but important to establish in these modern times, this topic was discussed during the event. How to achieve customer engagement and loyalty by establishing a relationship which is authentic, functional and relatable the main focus.

eTail Asia 2020

eTail Asia will be back again in 2020 for large, established e-retailers to share best practice, challenge convention and network among the leaders of Asian eCommerce. The event will be held on March 5th to 7th, 2020. Next year's eTail Asia will also be held at Sheridan Towers in Singapore.

The unusually warm February weather has increased the growth of online sales severely. It is the biggest growth in six months, according to IMRG Capgemini eRetail Sales Index. Even though sales in February were below the average five-year growth of +10.6% year on year, this warm weather-growth finally gives relief to online retailers who struggled recently.

The ‘Garden’ sector experienced the largest online sales growth due to the impact of the warm weather. Compared to last year, the sector grew by +33.3%. It is followed by ‘Health and Beauty’ with a +13.4% year over year increase. However, not all sectors were able to profit from this change in temperature. Electricals went down by -15.4% and gift-sales even decreased with -27.6%. The sales of clothing did not endure a drastic change (+0.9%). It was still too early in the year for spring collections to be released.

Spring

The principal consultant in retail customer engagement of Capgemini, Bhavesh Unadkat says: “February is usually a transitional month as spring lines take over the shop floor and clearance continues, especially online. In this regard, it is interesting to see that conversion was up over 20% on the year but sales only grew by 9%.”
This is a growth-percentage of 14.4%. The numbers show some interesting findings, FEVAD reports. They reflect that growth in a sector that has seen marketplaces like Amazon and others make inroads, puts pressure on brick-and-mortar retailers. These retailers need to accelerate their own digital offerings, cost-cutting and purchasing alliances.

Online sales generated on web-based marketplaces have grown 14%, while sales via apps on smartphones and tablets grew by 20%. While the total turnover grew, the average order value of an online purchase fell by 4 euros year-on-year, to 63 euros in this second quarter of 2018. On the contrary, according to the French e-commerce federation, there was an increase in the frequency of purchases.

The most visited e-commerce websites in France are, not surprisingly, Amazon, CDiscount and vente-privee. In 2017, e-commerce represented a total of 8.7% of overall French retail sales, up from 7.7% in 2016.

While e-commerce accounted for a third of the total value of technical consumer goods globally sold, the number in Europe is much lower. On average, the online share in 18 European countries is currently at 25 percent. This percentage is increasing over the past few years (2015: 21%), as can be concluded from the findings of GfK's study on the online sales of technical consumer goods. Not all product categories were equally popular when it comes to buying online in Europe. This may change as the European online retail sector is undergoing a massive change.

China
China and the APAC-region were driving global online sales. Chinese e-commerce retailers enjoyed significant double-digit growth at nearly 23 percent. In the first half of 2018, the online share of technical consumer goods sales in China reached over 30 percent. Unlike the US and Europe, where internet penetration levels are at 80 percent or higher in most countries, China’s internet penetration is still low at 55 percent as much of its population is located rurally. However, further investments in China’s infrastructure will set the ground for the further growth of internet usage - and thus - online sales. The Chinese e-commerce giants from China will focus on product categories in Europe, mostly in products that have shown some high levels of online growth during the first half of this year. Examples of these categories are telecommunication (21%), consumer electronic goods (22%) and small domestic appliances (28%). “These are the products to watch for increasing levels of online sales activities,” GfK writes.

M-commerce
The growing number of tech-savvy consumers increases the number of consumers using a smartphone or tablet to buy products online. The mobile device will become ever more important in Europe as a shopping tool. Here, the influence of Chinese e-commerce giants can be seen, as they are well positioned in the area of m-commerce through many years of experience in their home markets.

Competitive advantages for European key players
According to GfK, strong alliances amongst key players in Europe will be able to address these new challenges in the retail sector. Partnering retailers will take competitive advantage of their unique omnichannel selling propositions – allowing them to bring the best on- and offline shopping experience to their customers through new technologies, joint innovation activities, and co-investments into big data analytics. As much as the ongoing changes in Europe can be seen as most disruptive for technical consumer goods retailing, ‘traditional’ retail has not lost its attraction: The percentage of consumers who believe that physical stores today are less important than a few years ago has not changed over time (2015: 43 percent vs 2018: 43 percent).

You face the challenge of cutting through the noise. To compete with commercial giants like Amazon, smaller online retailers are finding ways to meet customers wherever and whenever they want to shop- but flexibility is no longer enough. The convenience of online shopping was revolutionary a few years back, but since the market exploded in the Nordics to a €21.9bn industry, it has become a bottom line standard for any brand serious about competing in retail.

Now, e-tailers need to find innovative new ways to personalise their offerings so they can build a loyal customer base- and they’re going to need to harness customer data to do it. The buzz around big data has been ringing in our ears for a while - but it’s time to grasp the bull by the horns. Although investing in new technology too heavily has been the pitfall of many, the other critical error has been leaving it too late. Customers expect to be able to have a personalised experience from a cohesive brand across all channels. But how can retailers strike the right balance when it comes to upgrading their online commerce?

In Q2 of 2018, WBR Insights surveyed 100 Directors of E-commerce from across the Nordics to find out more about the challenges they’re facing and the innovative solutions being brought to the table. The results are presented in this benchmark report with analysis and commentary by the eTail Nordic community. Download the full report below.
