Tencent has announced a $500 million investment in Indonesia. These funds will cover the construction of its third data center in the region in a partnership with GoTo Group and Alibaba Group. But more investments are promising to arrive soon in this Southeast Asian country.

The Indonesian government wants companies doing business in Indonesia to invest sufficiently. If they do, they may be able to continue to offer some of their products or services. We have already seen this with the ban on iPhone 16 and Pixel sales for lacking the so-called National Component Level Certificate (TKDN).

Multiple media reports have reported that the announcement was made over the weekend during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's state visit to China. Tencent's $500 million is part of a foreign investment package that promises to exceed $10 billion. What will all this money be used for? To boost the cloud computing business.

The idea is that Southeast Asia's largest economy will be able to offer its companies and startups a more solid infrastructure for all kinds of cloud services, including artificial intelligence (AI). This is part of a program known as “Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision,” which seeks to consolidate the industry and services sectors in Indonesia for the country's 100th anniversary of independence.

GoTo partnership with Tencent

GoTo, an Indonesian group, needs to lean on external partners on topics such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud infrastructure. Chinese companies such as Alibaba and Tencent are expected to capitalize on this need. However, to operate in the country, they have to meet a number of strict requirements that translate into local investment, something that the Indonesian government is pursuing.

The data handled by GoTo and its partners must remain stored in Indonesia. As recently promised, the only way to guarantee this requirement for national data sovereignty is to install more data centers in the country. The government has also succeeded in concluding an agreement to train Indonesian workers on issues related to the “new global digital economy.”

TikTok retail operation was canceled in Indonesia to comply with the country’s decision to ban e-commerce transactions on social media platforms. The cancelation of TikTok retail in the region is a massive blog to the social media fastest-growing market country in Asia.

A few months ago, the Indonesian government announced the new regulation, which prohibits social media companies from facilitating sales of products on their platforms, on Sept. 28 in a bid to protect small businesses from e-commerce competition, accusing the popular apps and websites of predatory pricing.

The Chinese-owned video-sharing app said in a statement it will stop facilitating e-commerce sales in TikTok Shop Indonesia by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Indonesia’s Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the ban aims to “prevent the domination of the algorithm and prevent the use of personal data in business interests" and "create a fair, healthy and beneficial electronic commerce ecosystem,” according to a statement released by the Trade Ministry when the ban was announced.

TikTok retail is growing massively

TikTok, owned by the Chinese group ByteDance, expects to reach 20 billion dollars (18.75 billion euros) in e-commerce this year, more than quadrupling last year's figures, when it invoiced 4.4 billion dollars (4.125 billion euros), according to Bloomberg.

The main explanation for this exponential upturn in its gross merchandise sales is the expected growth in Southeast Asia. In this market, TikTok is making a notable commitment, for example, in Indonesia, where now the social network will surely face considerable looses.

TikTok's e-commerce platform allows customers to purchase products through links in the app during live broadcasts. They can also access marketplaces through a tab on the app's home screen to search and browse.

Beyond Southeast Asia, the company is also working to expand its sales in the United States and Europe. In fact, TikTok Shop debuted this month in the U.S. market with some 150 million active users.

However, the penetration of the internet and a rise in income is expected to speed up the trend. In the upcoming three years, the country’s online e-commerce is estimated to have a value of 55-65 billion dollars. It will account for approximately 44 million shoppers. According to another report by Temasek and Google, the market will be worth 53 billion dollars by 2025.

Fast growing e-commerce market

The government has also recently made the decision to withdraw a regulation created to tax e-commerce transactions. This regulation was first announced in January. The estimated online population in Indonesia is 103 million, of which shoppers spend an average of 228 dollars. This makes the country one of the fastest growing in e-commerce (interest and revenue) globally. The country’s current market value is 7.2 billion dollars.

According to a report by Merchant Machine, Indonesia recorded a growth of 78% last year. In the market, the dominant spending sectors are clothing and travel. Especially in non-urban Indonesian areas, consumers enjoy a more affordable quality of life due to e-commerce.

Over 55% of the e-commerce spendings come from Jakarta. Here the market is more mature than other online retail regions within the country. In Jakarta, online spending is four times higher than in the rest of the island Java. Furthermore, it is a striking 10 times higher than the rest of the country.
