Amsterdam-based Wonderful has secured $150 million in Series B funding, reaching a valuation of around $2 billion and confirming its position as one of Europe’s fastest-growing AI startups.

The round was led by Insight Partners, with participation from major global investors including Index Ventures, IVP, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Vine Ventures.

While the company is relatively young—founded in 2025—it has already raised approximately $286 million in total funding, scaling rapidly across global markets.

What Wonderful actually does

From AI hype to real enterprise deployment

Wonderful operates an enterprise AI agent platform designed to automate complex workflows, particularly in customer-facing and operational processes.

Its core offering includes:

AI agents handling customer service across voice, chat, and email

Automation of internal processes like IT support, onboarding, and compliance

A model-agnostic architecture, selecting the best AI model per use case

This is a crucial distinction. Instead of building a single AI model, Wonderful focuses on orchestrating multiple models and embedding them into real business environments.

The key differentiator: “hyper-local AI”

Why this matters for Europe

One of Wonderful’s most important innovations is its “hyper-local deployment model”.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all AI solution, the company:

Deploys teams directly inside client organizations

Adapts AI systems to local languages, regulations, and cultural nuances

Operates across 30+ countries worldwide

This is particularly relevant in Europe, where:

Markets are fragmented

Regulations differ country by country

Multilingual customer interactions are the norm

Why investors are betting big

The shift from AI experimentation to execution

The funding reflects a broader market shift:

Enterprises are moving from testing AI to deploying it at scale

Wonderful is positioned at the center of this transition because it solves one of the biggest problems in AI adoption:

AI demos are easy

Production deployment is hard

Challenges include:

Integration with legacy systems

Regulatory compliance

Language localization

Reliability in real-world scenarios

Wonderful’s approach directly targets this “execution gap”.

Direct implications for e-commerce and logistics

Although Wonderful is not a logistics company, its impact on the sector is significant.

Customer experience automation

E-commerce companies can use AI agents to:

Handle returns, refunds, and delivery queries

Provide 24/7 multilingual support

Reduce customer service costs

This is especially valuable for cross-border e-commerce, where language and time zones create friction.

Operations and back-office efficiency

In logistics and supply chain environments, AI agents can:

Automate shipment tracking communications

Manage exceptions and delays

Support warehouse and IT workflows

This reduces operational overhead and improves responsiveness.

Localization at scale

For companies operating across Europe, Wonderful’s model enables:

Market-specific customer interactions

Compliance with local regulations

Better conversion rates in non-English markets

This is a major advantage in regions where US-centric AI tools often struggle.

Growth trajectory and expansion plans

Wonderful’s expansion is aggressive:

Active in 30+ global markets

Workforce expected to grow from ~350 to ~900 employees

Increasing focus on industries like telecom, finance, manufacturing, and healthcare

Revenue is already in the tens of millions, with growing demand for broader enterprise use cases beyond customer support.

Competitive landscape

Wonderful operates in a highly competitive space that includes:

AI customer support platforms

Enterprise automation tools

Emerging AI agent startups

However, its differentiation lies in:

Execution-first approach

Global deployment capability

Localization strategy

Many competitors focus on English-speaking markets, while Wonderful is explicitly targeting global, multilingual enterprises.

What this signals for the European tech ecosystem

Europe is building applied AI leaders

Wonderful’s funding highlights an important trend:

Europe is not just producing AI research

It is now building commercial AI platforms at scale

This aligns with broader investment patterns favoring:

Infrastructure-heavy startups

Enterprise-focused AI

Real-world deployment capabilities

The $150M funding round for Wonderful is more than just another AI investment. It signals a shift toward practical, deployable AI systems that solve real operational challenges.

For e-commerce and logistics companies, the implications are clear:

AI is moving from experimentation to core infrastructure

Localization and execution are becoming competitive advantages

Automation of customer and operational workflows will accelerate rapidly

Wonderful represents a new category of European startups:
AI companies built not just to innovate—but to operationalize AI at scale.

Social commerce—selling goods directly via social platforms—is no longer just a buzzword; it’s fast becoming a core retail channel in the Netherlands. With shifts in consumer behavior, technology, and regulation, Dutch brands and retailers must adapt quickly to stay relevant.

In this article, you'll find data-driven insights, trends, challenges, and actionable strategies for succeeding in the Dutch social commerce ecosystem in 2025.

Market Outlook & Growth Trajectory

Strong projected growth

The Netherlands’ social commerce market is expected to grow at a rate of 20.6% annually, reaching USD 7.39 billion by the end of 2025.

From 2021 to 2024, the sector achieved a 22% CAGR, driven by deeper integration of commerce features in social apps.

Post-2025, the forecasted CAGR from 2025 to 2030 is around 16.6%, expanding the market to nearly USD 15.92 billion by 2030.

At the European level, social commerce is also experiencing significant growth: Europe’s market is projected to increase by 20.7% in 2025, reaching USD 146.35 billion.

These numbers underscore that the Netherlands is part of a broader continental shift toward shopping via social media.

Consumer adoption & penetration

In the Netherlands, approximately 37% of consumers make purchases via Facebook and YouTube, while 35% use Instagram for shopping purposes.

The share of consumers purchasing new products or brands via social media jumped from 13% in late 2023 to 31% in late 2024.

On a generational level, 60% of Gen Z reported purchasing new products via social media in 2024.

Dutch consumers are increasingly discovering brands via social media, with 66% of Gen Z reporting they found new products or brands on these platforms.

These adoption figures suggest social commerce is no longer niche—it’s becoming a standard shopping path, especially among younger users.

Key Drivers & Trends in Dutch Social Commerce

Integration of commerce into social platforms

Social media apps are evolving to embed shopping more deeply, with features such as live shopping, shoppable posts, in-app storefronts, and streamlined payment flows. The goal is to minimize friction between browsing and buying.

Investment in creator & influencer experiences

Brands are shifting budgets toward micro- and macro-influencers and creators, not just for reach, but also for authenticity. Nearly half of social-first brands report that partnerships with creators and influencers deliver the highest ROI. However, only around 39% of social-first brands say social commerce currently provides high ROI, suggesting there is still room for optimization.

Content, UGC, and “sharing the pen”

The concept of “sharing the pen”—letting creators and users contribute content—is gaining traction. User-generated content and social proof help build trust and drive conversions.

Regulatory & disclosure risks

In the Netherlands, influencer marketing compliance and transparency are under scrutiny. Research shows that disclosure practices are often lacking or insufficient across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Future regulations, both national and EU-wide, may require tighter rules for social commerce promotions, particularly to protect younger users.

Mobile-first & frictionless experience

With around 61% of Dutch consumers considering smartphone shopping as their primary mode, mobile-first execution is vital. The smoother the checkout within the social app, the less likely users are to abandon their cart.

Challenges & Risks for Dutch Brands

Challenge

Implication

Suggested Mitigation

ROI gap

Many brands invest more than they gain from social commerce initially

Start small, test, iterate; track attribution carefully

Regulation & disclosure

Potential legal liabilities if influencer promotions are not transparent

Enforce clear disclosure policies and stay updated with laws

Platform dependence & algorithm changes

Reliance on Facebook and Instagram policies makes brands vulnerable

Adopt omnichannel strategies

User fatigue & ad saturation

Overexposure can reduce engagement

Emphasize storytelling, community, and value

Cross-border logistics & returns

Dutch consumers expect seamless returns and fast shipping

Plan strong reverse logistics and localized support

Actionable Strategies for Dutch Retailers

Optimized in-app shopping experience: Utilize shoppable posts, live commerce, and embedded catalogs to keep users within the app.

Leverage creators and community voices: Co-create content with trusted influencers and engage customers as brand ambassadors.

Focus on mobile-first design and speed: Design social posts, checkout flows, and media with mobile users as priority.

Experiment and iterate with attribution models: Use A/B testing and tracking to understand what works.

Ensure legal and ethical compliance: Include disclosure tags and align with Dutch and EU ad regulations.

Omnichannel integration: Let social commerce feed into your web store, CRM, email, and physical touchpoints.

Localization and cultural relevance: Utilize the Dutch language, local imagery, cultural events, and tailored offers to foster stronger connections with consumers.

Social commerce in the Netherlands is experiencing rapid acceleration. The numbers indicate a transformative shift: for many Dutch consumers, discovering and purchasing products via social platforms is becoming a regular part of the shopping journey. Brands that embrace creators, deliver seamless mobile shopping, and respect regulatory boundaries will be best positioned to capture this growth.

According to a new report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Netherlands' e-commerce penetration rate is the highest globally, at 84%. Following the ranking are the UK, Sweden, and Denmark, with over four out of five users also buying online.

China ranks fifth and is the first non-European country in the e-commerce penetration list, as indicated in UNCTAD’s Digital Economy Report (page 145). These percentages reflect the proportion of internet users who shop online. This proportion is relatively high in China, but many Chinese consumers are not yet digitally active.

Norway (6th), Switzerland (8th), and Germany (9th) are also high on UNCTAD’s list. Canada (7th) and South Korea complete the top 10, followed closely by the United States. France, Spain, and Italy rank much lower. In Southern Europe, many internet users are not online shoppers; fewer than four in ten in Italy.

The e-commerce market in the Netherlands, worth nearly 35 billion euros in 2023, is quite mature, as evidenced by the large share of online shoppers and the significant number of citizens with access to high-speed internet. Bol, a local player, has been the market leader for years.

Mobile e-commerce keeps growing in the Netherlands

According to a Worldpay report, Dutch consumers embrace alternative payment methods, especially mobile payments and e-invoicing. Additionally, the report by Worldpay shows that e-invoicing is on its way to almost triple the market share between now and 2024 and will thus become the most popular online payment method.

The popularity of e-wallets is also increasing by 22% annually. Its market share is expected to almost double in the next four years.

Mark Fleming, general manager for EMEA, Global Enterprise e-commerce at Worldpay, said: "In today's world, people depend on their phone for multiple activities, from payments to financial planning. The rise of m-commerce is one activity that allows traders to understand expectations from the relevant markets.”

The report shows that Dutch consumers, in particular, have high expectations regarding mobile shopping. To keep up with the developments, Worldpay advises merchants to invest in their own apps, build a smooth checkout experience for each device, and support various digital payment methods.

ShipBob, a global logistics provider specializing in e-commerce omni-fulfillment solutions, has launched its services in the Netherlands.

ShipBob was currently providing services for supply chain solutions and fulfillment of global orders from the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia.

The company was founded in 2014, in Chicago and currently has 330.5 million dollars in funding. It operates globally with a logistics network of more than 45 fulfillment centers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia.

With the Netherlands expansion, the company is opening its fifth location in Europe. The launch is a result of increased demand in the region. “As we have grown our United Kingdom and European business over the last 12 months, the next logical step was a Netherlands-based fulfillment location”, said Enda Breslin, GM of Europe at ShipBob.

ShipBob's alliance with Amazon fulfillment

One of the main competitive advantages of ShipBob is its alliance with Amazon to provide a fulfillment option for online sellers that streamlines the process by which inventory is entered into Amazon’s network for delivery.

The Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) Prep Automation service prepares and sends ShipBob merchants’ FBA inventory to Amazon for faster placement, allowing them to use ShipBob as their centralized inventory hub.

U.S. customers using the Automated FBA Prep service receive several benefits, ShipBob said, including automation of the process from order creation to fulfillment by syncing order and shipping label information between ShipBob and Amazon. Merchants can also prep orders directly from ShipBob’s dashboard and choose a ShipBob or Amazon prepaid shipping label.

A ShipBob application programming interface allows merchants to bypass Amazon workflows while ShipBob’s centralized inventory hub enables easy movement of items into Amazon’s or other retailers’ networks.

Heineken-owned online beer retailer, Beerwulf, has launched its first marketplace in the Netherlands.

With this marketplace, third-party retailers can sell products on its platform. Beowulf's new platform has already announced it will enter the United Kingdom in 2023, followed by Germany, France, and Italy.

🔥Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!🔥

Beerwulf was founded in 2017 by Heineken. This marketplace currently has localized online shops for 10 countries in Europe. In 2019, home tap retailers The Sub and Beerwulf were consolidated.

Beerwulf shouldn't be a Heineken-only experience

One of the things Heineken has strived to achieve with Beerwulf from the start is to bring a broader but highly curated assortment of beers to consumers and work with third-party sellers of all sizes, including established beer sellers and small-scale breweries.

With these third-party sellers, Beerwulf also plans to grow its offering beyond beer to include product categories such as glassware, bar accessories, and snacks.

“Joining forces with high-quality third-party sellers enables us to quickly add new products to our assortment and even new adjacent product categories with the click of a button,” said Cindy Tervoort, CEO at Beerwulf.

“It also minimizes the need for additional stock management on our side,” she added.

Like several other retailers launching as marketplaces, Beerwulf has partnered with a marketplace software company - in this case, Mirakl - on the launch to achieve a fast and successful implementation.

In an interesting move, Dutch logistics company PostNL has decided to open its network of parcel lockers to other carriers starting in 2023.

🔥Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!🔥

This will coincide with PostNL's plans to expand its network of 400 parcel lockers to 1,500 lockers by 2024 across the Netherlands.

In fact, PostNL has been expanding its network for some time already. Just this summer PostNL opened 350 new pick-up points in Belgium. Now it has announced plans of expanding its automated parcel locker network.

A new PostNL platform for parcel locker sharing

Currently, PostNL has over 400 lockers in several locations and most of these lockers are available to customers 24/7.

The idea of the company is to provide access to these 24/7 lockers to all other carriers operating in the Netherlands, as long as they fulfill a registration via a new online PostNL platform.

It is indeed using this future online platform, that the locker will be accessible to other carriers.

With the new platform, consumers will be able to pick up parcels from multiple carriers at one location. Carriers who want to use PostNL’s network, will need to pay a fee when booking a locker.

The fee depends on locker size and the number of days that a package stays inside the locker.

By 2024, the company wants to expand its network to 1,500 lockers across the country. The goal of the expansion is to make lockers accessible to more Dutch consumers.

The e-commerce lending startup Lemonero is launching in the Netherlands. This is Lemonero's second expansion after a successful launch in Central and Eastern Europe last year.

It already announced plans to expand into the DACH region, next year. Lemonero was founded in 2019 in the Czech Republic, and earlier in 2022, managed to raise over 10 million euros for its European expansion plans.

🔥Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!🔥

Lemonero's aim is to provide funds to small and medium-sized e-commerce businesses using data to review the application.

A lending platform for e-commerce

The business model for this e-commerce lending company works as follows: Companies who need extra funding quickly to purchase inventory can apply for a loan of up to 40,000 euros with Lemonero, completely online.

The company must provide a given set of pieces of information and answers to Lemonero, and upload its documents to the Lemonero platform, which will in turn qualify its request and connect them with possible banks for lending.

The whole process takes roughly 10 minutes.

Lending with Lemonero: over 84% is approved

The company is already providing lending services for thousands of online stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

And has partnerships with well-known platforms like GoPay, Mall, and Alza. These platforms can offer Lemonero’s embedded financing to online stores.

Officially, Lemonero claims that over 84% of the requests are immediately approved.

Dutch online retail: popular markets

Companies that are selling DIY items, kitchens, floors, furniture and home furnishings accomplished the largest growth in sales in February. We know this because the German fashion giant has finished number one in the Persuasion Index 2019. The Persuasion Index is a top 100 of online fashion retailers. A team of digital behavioural psychologists, data scientists and digital marketers compiled the index. In the index, Zalando was well ahead of other renowned names such as Foot Lockers, C&A and Net-A-Porter.

The Persuasion Index team examined numerous fashion retailers for five months to see who managed to use persuasion and personalisation techniques in their web shops in the best way. Zalando eventually won 83 out of 100 possible points and managed to leave Reebok (82), Under Armour (82), WE Fashion (81) and New Look (79) behind.

Two Dutch web shops made it to top 10

Finishing in fourth place, WE Fashion is the highest Dutch ranking in the list with 81 out of 100 points. WE Fashion is followed by C&A which, according to the researchers, is in a surprising tenth place, with a score of 75/100. Behavioural psychologists assess each web shop in the study on fourteen criteria, which ultimately resulted in 23 trends in e-commerce. According to Crobox, the company commissioning the study, these are the three most striking trends:

#1 Instagram

Instagram is becoming the most popular social network for companies to come into contact with customers. The latest trend is the integration with a so-called live social feed where fans or influencers who wear the brand or prizes get the space. According to Crobox, this is especially good for building social credibility and brand authority.

#2 Product recommendations

Product recommendations are nothing new under the sun, but thanks to new technology such as AI and self-learning algorithms, the recommendation systems are better than ever. The best working recommendations on a shopping cart page turn out to be products that are complementary to those already in the shopping cart instead of corresponding products. This has proven to work even better when the retailer has an instant-add button on this page.

#3 Convincing search function

Almost every web shop has a search function these days. However, web shops use a smart search function can score even better conversion figures. Implementing a convincing search bar is the next new innovation in this field; the smart search function shows categories such as popular products and new collections based on the customers' search history.

Personalisation is increasingly dominant in e-commerce

According to the CEO of Crobox, the domain of personalisation and online behavioural psychology is becoming increasingly dominant in e-commerce. "Choice stress on the overview page or frustration during the payment process are known barriers to conversion." With the index, the company critically highlights the standards of the industry and the awareness of behavioural design.
