Online shopping is becoming increasingly common, and unfortunately, so is the number of scams associated with it. Cybercriminals, in particular, try to take advantage of special occasions when they know shoppers will be more active than ever, such as Amazon's Prime Day.

Recently, the team at Check Point Software Technologies, a leading global provider specialized in cybersecurity, conducted a study that revealed an increase in the number of phishing campaigns related to Amazon Prime.

Specifically, the scams related to this event multiplied by 16 in the last month. Out of the 1500 newly detected domains, approximately 92% were classified as suspicious or malicious.

Pishing is the preferred scam method

The scams typically arise through the mentioned phishing method. As indicated by the cybersecurity company, in the days leading up to Prime Day, there was a distribution of emails containing fraudulent links redirecting users to fake websites with the same appearance as Amazon.

Personal information, banking details... Cybercriminals are increasingly obtaining more information to carry out their scams in a more sophisticated manner and impersonate domains like true professionals.

Digital security is of vital importance, especially when it comes to making purchases online. Paying attention to all the details can be crucial, such as identifying spelling mistakes, domains ending in '.co' instead of '.com', or even noticing if 'Cvv' is written instead of 'CVV' when referring to a credit card.

Taking precautions such as sharing minimal personal information, ensuring that we are on the original website, reviewing all details before completing a purchase, or looking for the secure connection symbol (SSL) on the webpage, are essential measures we should always take when shopping online.
