Online shopping is becoming increasingly common, and unfortunately, so is the number of scams associated with it. Cybercriminals, in particular, try to take advantage of special occasions when they know shoppers will be more active than ever, such as Amazon's Prime Day.

Recently, the team at Check Point Software Technologies, a leading global provider specialized in cybersecurity, conducted a study that revealed an increase in the number of phishing campaigns related to Amazon Prime.

Specifically, the scams related to this event multiplied by 16 in the last month. Out of the 1500 newly detected domains, approximately 92% were classified as suspicious or malicious.

Pishing is the preferred scam method

The scams typically arise through the mentioned phishing method. As indicated by the cybersecurity company, in the days leading up to Prime Day, there was a distribution of emails containing fraudulent links redirecting users to fake websites with the same appearance as Amazon.

Personal information, banking details... Cybercriminals are increasingly obtaining more information to carry out their scams in a more sophisticated manner and impersonate domains like true professionals.

Digital security is of vital importance, especially when it comes to making purchases online. Paying attention to all the details can be crucial, such as identifying spelling mistakes, domains ending in '.co' instead of '.com', or even noticing if 'Cvv' is written instead of 'CVV' when referring to a credit card.

Taking precautions such as sharing minimal personal information, ensuring that we are on the original website, reviewing all details before completing a purchase, or looking for the secure connection symbol (SSL) on the webpage, are essential measures we should always take when shopping online.

The Federal Trade Commission, the federal government's arm enforcing consumer protection laws, reported that Americans lost more than $6 billion to online scams in 2022. More than 2.9 million people said losing a median of $650.

🔥Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce and get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!🔥

During 2021, consumers lost more than $5.8 billion, a median of $500. That number will likely increase during 2023, following the January and February spike in reported cases of online spam.

Identity theft is the main form of online scams

Identity theft is currently the main form of online scam in the U.S. It primarily affects e-commerce with low-security measures in their payment gateways.

Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal and sensitive information such as your name, address, credit cards, bank account numbers, or medical insurance card numbers and uses the data to buy with stolen credit cards or open new ones, open utility accounts, or steal a consumer's tax refund.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, the main forms of the online scams are the following:

Phishing scams

Ransomware

Scareware

Travel scams

Fake shopping websites

Grandparent scams

Romance scams

Hitman scams

Lottery scams

Tech support scams

Disaster relief scams

COVID-19 scams

The Nigerian letter scams

Money transfer scams

Pre-approved notice scams

Cryptocurrency scams

Social media scams

Social media impersonation

Mobile scams

Job offer scams

Consumer Network Sentinel

The FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network (Sentinel) is a database that receives reports directly from consumers and federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, the Better Business Bureau, industry members, and non-profit organizations.

Twenty-five states now contribute to Sentinel. Reports from around the country about consumer protection issues are a key resource for FTC investigations that stop illegal activities and, when possible, provide consumer refunds.

Sentinel received more than 5.7 million reports in 2021 and over 6 million reports in 2022; these include the fraud reports detailed above, identity theft reports, and complaints related to other consumer issues, such as problems with credit bureaus and banks and lenders. In 2021, nearly 1.4 million reports of identity theft were received by the FTC.

The FTC uses the reports it receives through Sentinel as the starting point for many of its law enforcement investigations.

The agency also shares these reports with approximately 2,800 federal, state, local, and international law enforcement professionals. While the FTC does not intervene in individual complaints, Sentinel reports are vital to the agency’s law enforcement mission.
