According to recent industry forecasts, U.S. online sales during the 2025 holiday season (November 1 to December 31) are projected to reach approximately 253.4 billion dollars, reflecting year-on-year growth of about 5.3 percent. This represents a new all-time high for online holiday spending, even as the overall growth rate continues to moderate compared with earlier years of rapid e-commerce expansion.

Key Metrics and Trends

The Cyber Week period, which includes Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, remains the core driver of online shopping activity. Forecasts indicate that Cyber Week will account for roughly 43.7 billion dollars, about 17 percent of total holiday season spend.

Cyber Monday alone is expected to generate around 14.2 billion dollars, while Black Friday is projected to reach about 11.7 billion dollars. For the first time, ten individual days during the season are expected to surpass $ 5 billion in daily online spending, up from 7 the previous year.

Device Use, Payments and Categories

Mobile shopping continues its rise and is expected to account for 56 percent of all online holiday sales, equivalent to roughly 142.7 billion dollars, representing significant year-over-year growth.
Flexible payment methods, particularly Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL), are projected to contribute more than 20 billion dollars, reflecting about 11 percent growth over last year.
Discount levels across categories are expected to remain similar to the previous year, with some categories reaching peak discounts of around 28 percent.

Category Insights

More than half of all holiday online spending this year will be concentrated in three categories:

Electronics: approximately 57.5 billion dollars

Apparel: approximately 47.6 billion dollars

Home goods and furniture: approximately 31.1 billion dollars

Fast-growing categories include groceries (about 23.5 billion dollars) and cosmetics (about 8.4 billion dollars), both showing annual growth of more than 9 percent.

Influence of AI and Social Commerce

AI continues to reshape the online shopping landscape. Forecasts indicate a five-fold increase in AI-driven traffic to retail websites compared with last year.

Consumer surveys show that more than one-third of shoppers have used AI tools for holiday shopping tasks, including product research, recommendation browsing, deal discovery, and gift inspiration. Social media is also playing a larger role, with revenue from social platforms expected to grow by more than 50 percent, and affiliate- or influencer-driven sales rising by about 14 percent.

Implications for Businesses

The continued rise in online holiday spending reinforces the importance of a digital-first retail strategy. To remain competitive, retailers should prioritize mobile-first optimisation, flexible payment offerings, and AI-enhanced experiences. Discounting remains a key consumer expectation, but modest overall growth means retailers must maintain careful control over margins and inventory.

Electronics, apparel, and home goods remain essential categories, but growth in groceries and cosmetics provides opportunities for retailers seeking to expand.

For B2B Sellers and Suppliers

While the forecast focuses on consumer behaviour, several trends carry direct implications for B2B commerce. Higher online order volumes in major categories require strong supply-chain coordination, particularly for suppliers of electronics, home goods, and apparel.

The widespread use of AI in consumer research reinforces the value of high-quality product information and rich content across digital channels. The rise of BNPL suggests that flexible payment models may become increasingly relevant in B2B settings.

Mobile-first expectations in B2C are increasingly shaping B2B buyer expectations, accelerating the need for mobile-optimised portals and transactional workflows.

Risks and Considerations

The relatively moderate growth rate highlights the maturity of the e-commerce market. Economic variables such as inflation, tariff concerns, and cost pressures may influence consumer behaviour, leaning it toward value seeking and selective purchasing. Discounting strategies will become increasingly delicate as businesses attempt to balance competitive offers with margin preservation.

Operational readiness, including fulfilment and logistics scalability, remains essential due to the number of projected peak-demand days. Finally, the rapid rise of AI-driven traffic and social commerce introduces new strategic challenges; companies unable to adapt may lose visibility and conversion opportunities.

Strategic Imperatives for the 2025 Season

Ensure mobile-first design and checkout optimisation

Strengthen omnichannel cohesion between physical and digital experiences

Integrate AI into customer journeys for recommendations, service and personalisation

Expand social commerce and influencer engagement

Offer flexible payment models

Focus investment on high-volume and fast-growth categories

Prepare supply-chain operations for high-demand periods

The projection of more than 250 billion dollars in U.S. online holiday spending confirms that digital commerce remains one of the strongest pillars of retail performance. As the market matures, growth becomes more incremental, and success increasingly depends on differentiation through technology, AI-driven experiences, operational excellence and strategic category focus.
