Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are essential to the European Union's economy, significantly influencing employment, innovation, and growth. The rise of e-commerce has empowered these businesses to expand their market reach and increase competitiveness.

Today, we aim to explore e-commerce adoption among EU SMEs, its economic impact, and a comparative analysis of sales channels—own websites versus third-party marketplaces.

E-Commerce Adoption Rates among EU SMEs

In 2023 - the last available statistics inside the EU - the adoption of e-commerce by SMEs showed notable growth:

Small Enterprises (10-49 employees): 20.8%

Medium Enterprises (50-249 employees): 30.2%

Countries leading in adoption rates included Lithuania, Sweden, and Denmark, reflecting varied digital readiness across Europe.

Adoption Rates by Country (2023)

Country

Small Enterprises (%)

Medium Enterprises (%)

Lithuania

36.4

46.6

Sweden

35.0

49.0

Denmark

34.1

45.0

Ireland

32.5

46.5

Spain

31.6

40.9

Malta

30.2

41.3

Belgium

28.9

40.9

Croatia

28.7

35.9

Finland

27.7

40.3

Netherlands

27.6

34.9

Source: Statista, 2023

Economic Impact of E-Commerce on SMEs

E-commerce significantly influences SMEs' revenue, contributing:

9.5% of turnover for small enterprises

15% of turnover for medium-sized enterprises

This demonstrates that SMEs increasingly rely on online channels to enhance revenue streams and market presence.

Online Sales Channels: Own Websites vs. Marketplaces

SMEs predominantly utilize two digital sales channels:

Own Websites or Apps

Used by 85.8% of SMEs engaged in web sales

Generate approximately 6.3% of total SME turnover

E-commerce Marketplaces

Utilized by 45.3% of SMEs

Account for roughly 1.1% of total turnover

Although marketplaces offer extensive customer bases, SMEs often generate higher revenue through their digital platforms, maintaining direct customer relationships and brand control.

Challenges Facing SMEs in E-Commerce

Despite clear benefits, European SMEs face several challenges:

70% lack confidence in scaling online operations

Difficulty navigating logistics, VAT, and customs compliance

Addressing these challenges requires targeted guidance and support.

Opportunities for Growth

The European e-commerce market is projected to reach USD 0.70 trillion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 8% to USD 1.03 trillion by 2030. SMEs can seize these opportunities by:

Investing in user-friendly, mobile-optimized websites

Implementing secure, efficient payment systems

Leveraging data analytics for enhanced customer insights

Combining sales through marketplaces and own digital platforms for a broader reach

E-commerce adoption is crucial for SMEs seeking growth and competitiveness in the EU. While marketplaces offer expanded reach, businesses often achieve more revenue and brand loyalty through their websites. Addressing existing challenges and embracing digital transformation will position SMEs for success in Europe's evolving digital economy.
