Return Helper has raised US$4 million in Series A funding to expand its AI-powered cross-border e-commerce returns infrastructure. The round highlights the growing importance of reverse logistics in international online retail, where returns are no longer seen as a simple operational cost but as a strategic part of profitability, customer experience, and inventory recovery.

The funding round brought together a mix of financial and strategic investors, including Cathay Venture, MLC Ventures, Jun Yue Investment, Pegatron Venture Capital, and returning investor Colopl Next. MLC Ventures, the corporate venture arm of Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation, is especially relevant to the company’s next phase, as Return Helper looks to deepen its logistics capabilities and expand further across Japan and other international markets.

Founded as a technology-first provider of global cross-border e-commerce returns solutions, Return Helper supports merchants selling through major platforms such as Shopify, Amazon, TikTok and eBay. The company operates more than 20 overseas warehouses, works with over 30 carriers and logistics partners, and has offices across Asia, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan.

The new capital will support three areas: international expansion, AI development and recommerce. Together, these priorities point to a larger shift in e-commerce logistics. As cross-border selling becomes more common, merchants increasingly need infrastructure that can manage not only outbound fulfillment but also returns, resale, recycling, refurbishment, and local recovery of returned inventory.

Why cross-border returns are becoming a strategic issue

Returns are among the most complex aspects of e-commerce. In domestic retail, they already pose challenges for customer service, warehouse operations, refunds, fraud prevention, stock visibility, and resale. In cross-border e-commerce, those problems multiply.

International returns can involve customs declarations, local regulations, fragmented carrier networks, long transit times, high shipping costs, inspection delays, and uncertain resale options. A returned product may be worth less than the cost of shipping it back to the original warehouse. For many merchants, especially those selling low-margin products internationally, the financial logic of cross-border returns can quickly break down.

That is the problem Return Helper is trying to solve. Instead of treating international returns as a linear process in which products are simply sent back to the point of origin, the company focuses on local handling and asset recovery. Returned items can be inspected, processed, resold, recycled, or redirected through local networks, helping merchants recover more value and reduce waste.

This approach is increasingly important in Europe, where e-commerce growth, sustainability expectations and regulatory pressure are all changing how retailers think about returns. Customers expect easy return options, but merchants need to control costs. Regulators and consumers are also paying more attention to waste, product destruction, and the environmental footprint of online retail. For cross-border sellers, that creates demand for smarter returns infrastructure.

AI as the next layer of returns management

Return Helper’s funding round also reflects a wider trend: the use of AI in operational e-commerce workflows. While much of the public conversation around AI in retail has focused on product recommendations, chatbots and content generation, the next wave of adoption is moving deeper into logistics and back-office operations.

Returns management is well-suited to AI because it involves repetitive yet decision-heavy processes. Every return can require a judgment: should the item be accepted, refunded, exchanged, repaired, resold, recycled, or routed to a specific warehouse? Should the merchant pay for return shipping? Is the product still suitable for resale? Is there a fraud risk? Is local recovery more profitable than international shipment?

AI agents and automated decision systems can help merchants process these decisions faster and more consistently. In Return Helper’s case, the company has stated that part of the Series A funding will go toward developing AI agents to automate return decisions. This suggests that the company is not only building logistics infrastructure but also decision intelligence for cross-border reverse logistics.

For merchants, the value is clear. Faster returns processing can improve customer satisfaction. Better routing decisions can reduce costs. Automated inspection and resale workflows can increase recovery rates. More accurate data can help teams understand why products are being returned and how to reduce future return volumes.

Recommerce moves to the center of the business model

One of the most interesting aspects of Return Helper’s positioning is its emphasis on recommerce. The company is not only helping merchants manage returns; it is helping them turn returned goods back into recoverable value.

Recommerce refers to the resale, refurbishment, or redistribution of returned, used, or excess inventory. In the context of cross-border e-commerce, recommerce can be especially valuable because returning products to the original market is often inefficient. A product sold into Europe from Asia, for example, may be too expensive to ship back. Local resale or recycling may be the better financial and environmental option.

This matters because e-commerce returns have traditionally been treated as a margin drain. A customer returns a product, the merchant loses the sale, shipping costs increase, warehouse work increases and the product may lose resale value. If returns can instead be converted into local resale opportunities, the economics change.

Return Helper’s model fits into this shift. By combining overseas warehouses, carrier partnerships, returns software, warehouse management systems and recommerce operations, the company aims to help merchants recover value from products that might otherwise become stranded, discounted or written off.

For European e-commerce, this is particularly relevant. As marketplaces, direct-to-consumer brands and cross-border sellers compete on convenience, return policies remain a major part of the customer experience. However, generous return policies are only sustainable if the operational model behind them is efficient. Recommerce gives retailers a way to balance customer expectations with profitability and sustainability.

Europe as a key growth opportunity

Although Return Helper has strong roots in Asia, Europe appears to be an increasingly important part of its growth story. The company has reported strong momentum in Europe, including significant revenue growth and a growing base of European merchant partners.

This is not surprising. Europe is one of the world’s most attractive e-commerce regions, but it is also highly fragmented. Different languages, consumer expectations, carrier networks, tax rules, and market structures make cross-border operations complex. For merchants selling into multiple European countries, managing returns through a single centralized workflow can be difficult.

At the same time, European consumers are accustomed to strong consumer protection standards and convenient post-purchase experiences. A poor returns experience can damage trust and reduce repeat purchases. For international sellers, especially those entering Europe from Asia or other regions, returns infrastructure can become a competitive barrier.

Return Helper’s European opportunity lies in helping those sellers localize the post-purchase experience. Instead of forcing every returned product through a lengthy international reverse-logistics chain, merchants can use local processing, local resale, and more flexible warehouse routing. That can reduce cost, shorten processing times, and improve customer satisfaction.

The role of strategic investors

The investor mix in Return Helper’s Series A is also significant. This is not only a software funding story. The participation of logistics-linked and corporate investors suggests that cross-border returns are becoming a priority area for the broader supply chain industry.

MLC Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation, brings a clear logistics angle to the round. Mitsubishi Logistics has deep experience in warehousing, transportation and supply chain infrastructure, which could support Return Helper’s expansion in Japan and beyond. Pegatron Venture Capital also adds a strategic dimension, given Pegatron’s wider role in technology manufacturing and supply chain ecosystems.

This type of investor base is important because returns management requires more than a software dashboard. It depends on physical infrastructure, carrier relationships, warehouse processes, local market knowledge, and operational execution. By combining software and logistics capabilities, Return Helper is positioning itself in a category where pure SaaS tools may not be enough.

What this means for merchants

For e-commerce merchants, the Return Helper funding round is part of a broader signal: returns are becoming a core part of international growth strategy. Brands that expand across borders without a clear returns model may face rising costs, slower refunds, poor customer reviews, and inventory losses.

A stronger returns strategy can help merchants in several ways. It can reduce unnecessary international shipping, improve refund speed, support exchanges, recover more value from returned items, and provide better data on product quality, sizing, customer expectations, and fraud patterns.

For marketplace sellers, the pressure is even higher. Platforms such as Amazon, TikTok Shop, eBay, and Shopify-based storefronts all create different operational requirements. Sellers that operate across multiple channels need systems that can centralize returns and connect the process with warehouses, carriers and resale channels.

Return Helper’s focus on multi-platform support is therefore important. By serving merchants who sell through Shopify, Amazon, TikTok, eBay, and other channels, the company addresses the reality of modern e-commerce: sellers rarely operate through a single storefront.

The wider market trend: from fulfillment to reverse logistics

For years, the e-commerce logistics conversation focused heavily on fulfillment speed. Retailers competed on faster delivery, better tracking, distributed warehouses, and last-mile convenience. That remains important, but the next competitive layer is reverse logistics.

As online sales volumes grow, return volumes grow with them. In categories such as fashion, footwear, electronics, and home goods, returns can represent a major operational burden. Cross-border returns add even more friction. This is why investors are paying closer attention to companies that can deliver returns more cheaply, smarter, and more profitably.

The Return Helper round shows that reverse logistics is becoming part of the core e-commerce technology stack. Returns management, warehouse software, AI decision-making, carrier orchestration, and recommerce are no longer separate functions. They are converging into a single post-purchase infrastructure layer.

This is also where AI can create measurable value. Unlike more experimental AI use cases, returns management has direct operational metrics: processing time, cost per return, resale recovery rate, refund time, customer satisfaction, fraud reduction, and inventory recovery. That makes it easier for merchants to connect technology investment with business outcomes.

Return Helper’s next challenge

The opportunity is clear, but the challenge is also significant. Cross-border returns are operationally complex, and scaling them across markets requires consistency, local knowledge, and strong execution. Return Helper will need to prove that its model can work across different regions, product categories, merchant sizes, and regulatory environments.

Its ability to integrate AI into real logistics workflows will also be important. AI-powered returns decisions can create value, but only if they are supported by accurate data, reliable warehouse processes and clear merchant rules. Automation in returns cannot be generic; it must account for product condition, category, value, customer history, regional regulation, and resale potential.

If Return Helper can combine AI decision-making with strong physical infrastructure, it could become an important player in the next phase of cross-border e-commerce logistics.

Return Helper’s US$4 million Series A funding round reflects a larger shift in global e-commerce. Cross-border returns are no longer a secondary operational issue. They are becoming a strategic battleground for profitability, customer experience, and sustainability.

By focusing on AI-powered returns management, recommerce and international logistics infrastructure, Return Helper is addressing one of the hardest problems in online retail: how to make global selling work after the sale has already happened.

For European merchants and international sellers entering Europe, the message is clear. Growth is not only about acquiring customers and shipping products across borders. It is also about building the infrastructure to manage what comes back. As return volumes rise and margins remain under pressure, companies that can turn reverse logistics into recoverable value may become increasingly important to the future of cross-border e-commerce.

Asia-Pacific has become the global epicenter of e-commerce logistics growth, and specific Asia-Pacific E-Commerce Logistics are expected to reach $269 billion in 2026.

The sector is projected to expand from approximately $223 billion in 2025 to around $269 billion in 2026, reflecting strong consumer demand, digital trade expansion, and continuous infrastructure investment. This growth is driven not only by domestic online retail but increasingly by cross-border commerce, where consumers expect fast, reliable delivery across national boundaries.

The region combines high population density, growing middle classes, widespread mobile adoption, and advanced manufacturing ecosystems. These factors uniquely position the Asia-Pacific to dominate global e-commerce logistics development.

Key drivers behind market expansion

Cross-border online shopping has become a mainstream consumer behavior across Asia. Shoppers regularly purchase products from neighboring countries or global marketplaces, increasing demand for efficient customs clearance, international fulfillment networks, and optimized last-mile delivery.

Companies are investing heavily in regional distribution hubs, bonded warehouses, and integrated logistics platforms to shorten delivery times and reduce operational complexity.

Infrastructure and logistics corridor development

Large-scale infrastructure investments are reshaping trade routes across Asia. Rail corridors connecting China with Southeast Asia and Europe, expanded port capacity, and improved highway networks are enhancing multimodal logistics efficiency.

These developments reduce transit times and costs while improving reliability, which is essential for time-sensitive e-commerce shipments.

Technology-driven logistics optimization

Digitalization is transforming cross-border logistics operations across the region. Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and automation are improving:

Demand forecasting

Inventory positioning

Route optimization

Customs documentation processing

Advanced warehouse automation and robotics are also improving fulfillment speed and accuracy, particularly in major logistics hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and coastal China.

Consumer expectations and delivery speed

Fast delivery has become a competitive differentiator in the Asia-Pacific e-commerce. Same-day or next-day delivery expectations are pushing logistics providers to expand regional micro-fulfillment centers and optimize last-mile networks.

Cross-border logistics providers must now balance speed with cost efficiency while maintaining compliance with diverse regulatory environments.

The strategic importance of cross-border logistics hubs

Several cities in the Asia-Pacific function as logistics gateways for regional trade. Singapore continues to serve as a major transshipment and fulfillment hub due to its high-quality infrastructure, efficient regulations, and strategic geographic location. Similarly, ports and logistics zones in China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia are expanding to accommodate rising cross-border trade volumes.

These hubs facilitate consolidation, customs clearance, and redistribution of goods throughout the Asia-Pacific markets.

Sustainability trends shaping logistics operations

Environmental considerations are increasingly influencing logistics decisions. Companies are exploring:

Alternative fuels and electrified delivery fleets

Route optimization to reduce emissions

Green warehouse construction

Modal shifts from air freight to rail or sea, where possible

Sustainability initiatives are becoming not only regulatory requirements but also competitive advantages as brands seek environmentally responsible supply chains.

Challenges facing Asia-Pacific cross-border logistics

Despite rapid growth, several structural challenges remain.

Regulatory complexity

Customs regulations vary widely across Asia-Pacific markets. Differences in documentation requirements, tariffs, product standards and digital customs capabilities can slow cross-border shipments.

Harmonization efforts are underway in several regional trade agreements, but operational complexity persists.

Supply chain resilience and geopolitical risk

Trade tensions, border disputes, and economic shifts can disrupt logistics flows. Companies are increasingly diversifying sourcing locations and logistics routes to mitigate risk.

Resilient supply chains often prioritize flexibility over purely cost-driven optimization.

Capacity constraints

Growing demand is placing pressure on warehouse capacity, transportation infrastructure, and skilled logistics labor. Urban congestion in major cities also complicates last-mile delivery operations.

Investment in smart logistics infrastructure remains essential to sustain growth.

Future outlook for Asia-Pacific e-commerce logistics

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to remain the fastest-growing e-commerce logistics market globally. Continued digital adoption, cross-border trade liberalization, and infrastructure development will reinforce its leadership position.

Technology integration, sustainability initiatives, and resilient supply chain strategies will shape the next phase of growth. Companies that combine operational efficiency with cross-border expertise and customer-centric delivery models are likely to lead the market.

The projected expansion from $223 billion in 2025 to approximately $269 billion in 2026 illustrates not only short-term growth but also the long-term structural importance othe f Asia-Pacific region in global e-commerce logistics.

In a year marked by both global economic volatility and intense regional competition, Sea Ltd.—parent company of Shopee and SeaMoney—has staged a remarkable comeback, signaling renewed strength in Asia’s digital retail economy. With its stock soaring 47% in 2025, Sea is proving that e-commerce growth in Southeast Asia is far from saturated.

According to early forecasts, Sea’s Q2 e-commerce revenue is expected to grow by nearly 20%, reaching $4.55 billion. This performance not only beat investor expectations but also reflects strategic discipline and improving fundamentals across its digital commerce ecosystem.

Why Sea’s Performance Matters for E-Commerce in Asia?

Shopee’s Return to High Growth

Shopee, Sea’s flagship marketplace, continues to dominate Southeast Asia with aggressive marketing, localized seller tools, and mobile-first UX. Its return to double-digit revenue growth signals strong consumer demand, healthy repeat purchase rates, and improved monetization.

Shopee’s performance is particularly noteworthy given the rising pressure from competitors like Lazada, TikTok Shop, and Temu—all of which have expanded aggressively in the region.

Profitability Improves After Years of Losses

After years of expansion-driven losses, Sea has made meaningful improvements in cost control, advertising efficiency, and logistics optimization. Shopee’s unit economics have shifted positively, proving that growth and profitability can now coexist in regional e-commerce.

Fintech Synergy Through SeaMoney

Sea’s fintech arm, SeaMoney, has become a powerful complement to Shopee’s core e-commerce offering. With digital wallets, BNPL (Buy Now, Pay Later), and micro-loans integrated directly into the checkout experience, Sea is capitalizing on underserved financial markets and boosting checkout conversions.

What It Means for the E-Commerce Landscape

Sea Ltd.’s rebound has broader implications for the e-commerce sector in Asia:

Investor Confidence Returns: Sea’s turnaround strengthens investor confidence in e-commerce platforms with disciplined growth strategies. The success also lifts peer valuations and signals recovery in consumer digital spending.

Renewed Competitive Pressure: Shopee’s growth puts pressure on Lazada, TikTok Shop, and regional upstarts. Expect new rounds of price wars, seller subsidies, and faster innovation cycles across Southeast Asia.

Logistics and Payment Maturity: Sea’s improved fulfillment and SeaMoney integration show that infrastructure investment is paying off. E-commerce platforms that control payments and logistics end-to-end gain a long-term advantage.

Sea Ltd.’s strong 2025 performance is more than a company milestone—it’s a bellwether for Southeast Asia’s e-commerce recovery. Shopee’s rebound, combined with strategic fintech integration and disciplined cost management, reflects the growing stability of mature digital ecosystems. As the sector evolves beyond unsustainable growth, Sea Ltd. now sets the benchmark for scalable and profitable e-commerce in Asia.

Domestic Brands

Livestreams from sellers showcase discounted products, effectively tapping into nationalistic sentiment fueled by U.S.-China trade tensions.

3. Top Marketplaces for Social Selling and Live Shopping

Taobao Live (Diantao)

Taobao Live, Alibaba's dedicated live-streaming platform, remains a dominant force in China's live commerce landscape. It seamlessly integrates with Alibaba's vast marketplace, allowing consumers to move seamlessly from discovery to purchase.

JD.com

JD.com has launched a 200 billion yuan ($27.35 billion) fund to help Chinese exporters sell their products domestically. This fund supports the push to redirect export surplus into China’s domestic market amid geopolitical strains.

Pinduoduo

Known for its innovative group buying model, Pinduoduo continues to be a significant player in China's e-commerce scene, offering unique opportunities for social commerce.

4. Best Social Media Platforms for Live Shopping in China and Asia

Douyin (TikTok China)

Douyin has become a central platform for live commerce in China. Its integration of short videos and live streaming with e-commerce functionalities has attracted numerous brands and consumers.

Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book)

Xiaohongshu has evolved into a powerhouse for lifestyle content and social commerce. Its platform combines user-generated content with e-commerce, making it particularly popular among young Chinese women.

WeChat

WeChat has become a central e-commerce channel, allowing brands to sell items directly through the platform. Its messaging, social networking, and payment services integration provide a seamless shopping experience.

5. Consumer Behavior and Trends

Purchase Frequency

According to a survey by Rakuten Insight in May 2024, 51% of respondents reported making more than six purchases through live commerce platforms, indicating high consumer engagement.

Popular Product Categories

Apparel remains the most popular category in live commerce, followed by beauty products and food items, reflecting consumer preferences in live shopping environments.

Motivations for Live Commerce Purchases

New discount offers emerged as the biggest motivation for purchasing items through live commerce, highlighting the importance of promotions in driving sales.

Social selling in China has become an integral part of the retail landscape, driven by the seamless integration of social media, live streaming, and e-commerce. With significant investments from domestic and international brands, and the continuous evolution of platforms like Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and WeChat, China's social commerce market is poised for sustained growth. Understanding consumer behaviors and leveraging the strengths of various platforms will be crucial for brands aiming to succeed in this dynamic environment.

Curious about what sets the e-commerce markets of China and the West apart? It's not just about the size of their populations. Cultural preferences, payment practices, and what consumers value when shopping online play a huge role too. These factors have uniquely shaped the e-commerce landscape in each country. Dive into today’s episode to get a closer look at these differences and learn how they're guiding businesses to tailor their strategies. Let's explore together!

Platforms and Ecosystems:

In China, the online shopping world is mostly controlled by big platforms, offering a wide variety of products and services:

Major Platforms: Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall, and JD.com dominate, selling everything from consumer goods to electronics and fashion.

Integrated Services: These platforms also provide additional services such as payment options, delivery solutions, and marketing, creating an all-in-one ecommerce ecosystem.

In contrast, the West’s online shopping landscape is more diverse, with a mix of smaller and larger players:

Diverse Market: Western countries feature a mix of smaller online retailers and marketplaces alongside big platforms like Amazon and eBay, making its market more fragmented.

Market Size and Penetration: As of 2023, China was the largest e-commerce market in the world by a significant margin, reflecting its high market size and penetration rate compared to other countries.

China

Market Size: China's e-commerce market size was estimated to be over $2 trillion USD, making it the largest e-commerce market globally

Penetration Rate: A significant portion of the Chinese population shops online, with estimates suggesting that over 50% of the population engaged in ecommerce transactions. The penetration rate is among the highest in the world, partly due to the widespread adoption of mobile payments and a robust logistics network.

United States

Market Size: The United States is the second-largest e-commerce market, with a size of approximately $800 billion to $1 trillion USD.

Penetration Rate: The e-commerce penetration rate in the U.S. is also high. However, the rate is slightly lower than in China, partly because of a more diverse retail landscape and slower adoption of mobile payments compared to China.

Western Consumers: Value quality, reliability, and excellent customer service. Look for detailed product information and transparent pricing. Need trust in the seller.

Chinese Consumers: More price-sensitive, seeking discounts and promotions. Depend on user reviews and influencer endorsements for purchasing decisions. Expect instant and 24/7 customer service. Want fast shipping, including 1-day or even 12-hour delivery on platforms like Tmall and JD.

Mobile Dominance: Chinese consumers prioritize using their smartphones for various online activities, from shopping to social networking and making payments. This trend is often described as "mobile first" and is evident in the country's high mobile e-commerce rate in 2023:

China: 95.8% of e-commerce sales were made through mobile devices.

Germany (West): 60.5% of e-commerce sales were mobile.

Popular apps like Taobao and WeChat play a crucial role in facilitating these ecommerce transactions in China. For brands across different sectors, this trend underscores the importance of focusing on mobile-first strategies. This means marketing efforts, shopping experiences, and digital assets should be optimized for mobile usage to effectively engage consumers.

Sephora announced a new leadership appointment to oversee its presence in China, naming Xia Ding as managing director of Greater China. She will bring decades of experience, including time at JD.com, Hanes, and Nike.

The beauty retail detailed its new hire on April 15. The company noted the scope of her role, which includes mainland China and Hong Kong.

Sephora is part of LVMH, which ranks No. 3 in Digital Commerce 360’s Europe Database. Digital Commerce 360 categorizes the company as a Health & Beauty retailer.

Xia Ding’s role at Sephora

“Xia Ding is a quintessential leader with a wealth of experience in running businesses, digital transformations, and strategic business development,” said Alia Gogi, president of Sephora Asia. “I am confident that her skill set, knowledge of brick & mortar retail, expertise in digital and e-commerce, and proven track record in building and sustaining profitable business will take Sephora Greater China into its next phase of growth and success.”

Ding will report directly to Gogi. Sephora lists its Greater China market encompassing 350 stores and two e-commerce websites. It also operates associated digital platforms and apps. Globally, the brand counts 3,000 points of sale and operates in 35 different markets.

China was an area of experimentation for Sephora in 2023 when it debuted its “Stores of the Future” concept in Shanghai and Wuhan. The stores added unique Sephora services, free workshops, and new technology additions to reduce friction in the shopping experience and strengthen their omnichannel offerings.

Ding’s background before Sephora

“I am thrilled to join Sephora at a time where the prestige beauty market in China is at the cusp of its next growth phase,” Ding said in a released statement. “Sephora’s allure lies in its powerful curation capabilities, strong culture anchored in purpose and DE&I, and an incredible ability to offer beauty enthusiasts an ever-evolving retail experience.”

Before joining Sephora, she spent five years at Nike. There, she was vice president and general manager of e-commerce in the Asia Pacific and Latin America markets. Her other past roles included time as president of JD Fashion at JD.com, vice president of retail service at Nielsen in China, and vice president and director roles at HanesBrands Inc., leading expansion efforts in China.

Her arrival at Sephora comes as the company expands. The company’s website states that it has “an expanding base of 200 stores across the Asia Pacific region, including Australia, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and India.” Sephora revealed in March, however, that it would shutter its operations in South Korea beginning in May.

JD.com Inc. is No. 1 in the Asia Database, Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the region’s largest online retailers. It is also No. 4 in the Global Online Marketplaces Database.

Nike ranks No. 8 in the Top 1000 Digital Commerce 360’s database of the largest North American e-retailers by online sales. It’s also the highest-ranking Apparel/Accessories retailer in the Top 1000.

TikTok retail operation was canceled in Indonesia to comply with the country’s decision to ban e-commerce transactions on social media platforms. The cancelation of TikTok retail in the region is a massive blog to the social media fastest-growing market country in Asia.

A few months ago, the Indonesian government announced the new regulation, which prohibits social media companies from facilitating sales of products on their platforms, on Sept. 28 in a bid to protect small businesses from e-commerce competition, accusing the popular apps and websites of predatory pricing.

The Chinese-owned video-sharing app said in a statement it will stop facilitating e-commerce sales in TikTok Shop Indonesia by 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Indonesia’s Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the ban aims to “prevent the domination of the algorithm and prevent the use of personal data in business interests" and "create a fair, healthy and beneficial electronic commerce ecosystem,” according to a statement released by the Trade Ministry when the ban was announced.

TikTok retail is growing massively

TikTok, owned by the Chinese group ByteDance, expects to reach 20 billion dollars (18.75 billion euros) in e-commerce this year, more than quadrupling last year's figures, when it invoiced 4.4 billion dollars (4.125 billion euros), according to Bloomberg.

The main explanation for this exponential upturn in its gross merchandise sales is the expected growth in Southeast Asia. In this market, TikTok is making a notable commitment, for example, in Indonesia, where now the social network will surely face considerable looses.

TikTok's e-commerce platform allows customers to purchase products through links in the app during live broadcasts. They can also access marketplaces through a tab on the app's home screen to search and browse.

Beyond Southeast Asia, the company is also working to expand its sales in the United States and Europe. In fact, TikTok Shop debuted this month in the U.S. market with some 150 million active users.

Alibaba joins the race for AI leadership with the launch of its new Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, which, they clarify in the release, can understand more complex images and text than any current AI in the market.

Alibaba Cloud is the branch of the Chinese company in charge of developing AI-related projects. A few months ago, it announced the development of its first AI model called Tongyi Qianwen, which can convert text into images. Now, Alibaba has gone a step further with its two new AI models, the first of which is Qwen-VL, which can answer open-ended image-related queries with Chinese and English texts and generate image captions.

The second, Qwen-VL-Chat, can perform more sophisticated tasks, such as performing mathematical calculations and creating a story based on multiple images or answering multiple rounds of questions.

Open Source AI models

Alibaba's two new models will be open source, allowing researchers, academics, and companies worldwide to use them to create AI applications without investing much money and time in training their systems.

Until now, most generative artificial intelligence has focused on text understanding. However, both OpenAI and Alibaba have laid the foundation for the next trend in this field, where multimedia content understanding is starting to gain importance.

The tech giant has its focus on developing new AI models and, for the time being, is not charging for their use. This benefits the company by reaching more users and continuing to grow in preparation for its IPO.
