<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spain’s e-commerce market continues to experience rapid expansion, with digital payments increasingly overtaking cash. By 2025, online shoppers are projected to exceed 40 million, and e-commerce revenue is expected to surpass €75 billion.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That's why we will take a look at the current status of Spanish online payment solutions today.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Market Overview and Consumer Preferences</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Growth of Online Shopping</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2022, e-commerce turnover in Spain reached approximately €67 billion, growing steadily and expected to reach over €75 billion by mid-decade. Consumer adoption is rising, with nearly 40 million digital buyers projected by 2025 (from 32 million in 2022).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Payment Behavior: Card and Wallets</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2024, 51% of online payments in Spain were made with cards, followed by 26% via other electronic methods such as digital wallets and mobile apps. While physical stores still handle a portion of payments in cash, card, and mobile payments are becoming dominant in online commerce.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Card Usage Dominance</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Card payments remain Spain’s most important online payment instrument. In 2024, cards accounted for 62% of payment volume, with nearly 94 million cards in circulation by 2025, averaging two cards per adult.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Wallets and Instant Payments</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Digital wallets—including PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and especially Bizum—constitute a growing share of e-commerce payments. They are forecast to rise steadily thanks to consumer demand for fast, mobile-first checkout. Bizum is particularly prominent for peer-to-peer and retail use. In 2024, it had over 27 million active users and launched Bizum Pay for NFC and e-commerce in 2025.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">BNPL Growth</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services are also expanding. Spain’s BNPL market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 11.6%, reaching nearly €9 billion by 2025.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Leading E-Commerce Payment Methods in 2025</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Credit &amp; Debit Cards</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cards represent over 50% of all online transactions in Spain. They capture the largest share of e-commerce value due to widespread use, high trust levels, and high average basket sizes. Cards are especially preferred for purchases over €50 and in cross-border shopping.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Wallets &amp; Bizum</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Digital wallets, including PayPal and mobile-native options, account for approximately 26% of online payments and are experiencing steady growth. Bizum stands out due to its widespread P2P adoption and increasing use in commerce through the newly launched Bizum Pay feature.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Instant Bank Transfers (Bizum in Commerce)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bizum enables instant, account-to-account bank transfers and is growing rapidly for e-commerce, offering low-friction checkout and seamless integration with Spanish banks.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">BNPL services like Klarna and local providers are on the rise, especially in high-growth verticals like electronics, fashion, and travel. They provide installment flexibility for consumers and increase average order values for merchants.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">SEPA Direct Debit and Recurring Payments</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">SEPA direct debit remains the leading method for recurring payments such as subscriptions and utilities. It is favored for its automation, predictability, and low fees for domestic services.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">European Initiatives &amp; Wero Rollout</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bizum &amp; EuroPA Alliance</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2025, Bizum joined EuroPA alongside Portugal’s MB WAY and Italy’s Bancomat Pay, enabling cross-border instant payments across Southern Europe. This alliance aims to create an interoperable European payments framework centered on mobile-first experiences.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wero (EPI Wallet)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wero is the new European digital wallet developed under the European Payments Initiative (EPI). It is intended to unify and gradually replace local solutions like Bizum, starting in 2025. It includes features such as QR-code-based payments, BNPL support, loyalty programs, and strict EU data compliance. Full rollout in Spain is expected between 2025 and 2026.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategic Considerations for Spanish E-Commerce Merchants</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Conversion-Optimized Payment Mix</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To reduce cart abandonment and optimize conversion rates, merchants should prioritize card acceptance, followed by PayPal, Bizum, and emerging BNPL options. Offering a diverse mix aligned with Spanish user preferences is critical.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Streamlined, Mobile-First Checkout</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With mobile commerce on the rise and more than 60% of Spanish users stating they would spend more online if checkout were simpler, merchants must focus on providing frictionless, mobile-optimized experiences. Features like one-click payments, biometric login, and mobile-native wallets are now essential.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Preparing for EU Payment Infrastructure</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Merchants should follow developments around Bizum’s integration into EuroPA and the eventual launch of Wero. Ensuring readiness for PSD2/PSD3 compliance and supporting open banking features will help future-proof operations and ensure EU-level competitiveness.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary Table: Spain’s E-Commerce Payment Methods 2025</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><tbody><tr><td>Payment Method</td><td>Estimated Share</td><td>Key Strengths</td><td>Merchant Considerations</td></tr><tr><td>Credit / Debit Cards</td><td>~51–62 %</td><td>Highest reach; trusted; works cross-border</td><td>Fees; requires 3D Secure/SCA implementation</td></tr><tr><td>Digital Wallets (PayPal, Apple, Google)</td><td>~26 %</td><td>Fast checkout; mobile and global users</td><td>Secondary option; user accounts required</td></tr><tr><td>Bizum &amp; Instant Bank Payment</td><td>Growing (~15–25 %)</td><td>Fast A2A transfers; mobile-native; low friction</td><td>Requires bank integration; growing commerce support</td></tr><tr><td>BNPL (Klarna, local providers)</td><td>Emerging (~10 %)</td><td>Flexible terms; higher basket sizes</td><td>Fee structure; credit risk</td></tr><tr><td>SEPA Direct Debit (Recurring)</td><td>Recurring subscriptions</td><td>Automated; reliable for repeat billing</td><td>Setups/disputes; requires mandate management</td></tr><tr><td>Wero (EPI Wallet)</td><td>Launching 2025–26</td><td>Unified EU wallet; loyalty and BNPL integration</td><td>Early adoption; technical onboarding needed</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Spain’s e-commerce payment landscape in 2025 is led by credit and debit cards, with digital wallets and Bizum gaining increasing support. Recurring transactions are primarily driven by SEPA direct debit, while BNPL is gaining traction across various retail categories. The introduction of Wero will mark a turning point, offering a unified, EU-native alternative to U.S.-based platforms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To thrive, merchants must adapt to evolving consumer habits, prioritize mobile-friendly, multi-option payment experiences, and prepare for deeper European integration through platforms like EuroPA and Wero.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Italy’s e-commerce market is rapidly growing—estimated at US $56 billion (≈ €52 billion) in 2025 and expected to reach approximately US $82 billion by 2027. As consumer behavior shifts toward digital, offering the right mix of payment methods is essential for enhancing trust and conversion. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That's why we will review the current landscape and leading players in the Italian online payment solutions market today. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Market Overview and Consumer Preferences</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Payment Shares &amp; Trends</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Credit and debit cards account for around 31–33% of online transactions, often leading in terms of transaction value.<br></li>

<li>Digital wallets—including PayPal, PostePay, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay—account for ≈ approximately 35 % of online payments and are especially preferred for low-value orders.<br></li>

<li>Bank transfers (e.g. SEPA, MyBank) contribute roughly 13 %, while cash on delivery still persists at about 4 %.<br></li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Payment Providers &amp; Local Preferences</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>PostePay, Italy’s national postal service prepaid card, is used by around 35% of consumers, often chosen over credit cards due to its convenience and security.<br></li>

<li>PayPal remains widely trusted across purchase types—from subscriptions to retail—thanks to its buyer protection and flexibility in payment sources.<br></li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Leading E‑Commerce Payment Methods in 2025</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Credit and Debit Cards</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Credit/debit card transactions (Visa, Mastercard, local schemes) hold the largest share of e-commerce payment volume (≈ 31–33 %). Local card schemes are particularly significant, accounting for nearly 45% of card usage in some reports.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Digital Wallets (PayPal, PostePay, Amazon Pay, Google Pay)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Digital wallets account for approximately 35% of online payments in Italy. PayPal leads, followed by PostePay, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">PostePay</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Issued by Poste Italiane, PostePay is deeply integrated with Italian e-commerce preferences and frequently used among younger or card-averse consumers.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bank Transfers (SEPA, MyBank)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Account-to-account methods, such as SEPA transfers and MyBank (a bank-based online payment method), account for about 13% of transactions. These methods appeal to consumers favoring direct bank settlement.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bancomat Pay</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bancomat Pay, Italy’s domestic debit card–based wallet, is gaining traction—especially after partnerships like the one with Amazon Italy, which enables checkout via Bancomat Pay cards.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mobile Tap‑to‑Pay (Apple Tap to Pay, etc.)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2024, Nexi, Stripe, and Adyen launched Apple Tap to Pay services in Italy, enabling merchants to accept contactless NFC payments via iPhones—ideal for small shops without dedicated hardware.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">European Initiatives: Wero &amp; EuroPA</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wero (European Payments Initiative)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wero, the new EU-wide digital wallet by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), was launched in mid-2024 and is expected to extend online payment functionality into 2025–2026. Italian merchants using Wero via Nexi will soon offer QR, installment, and BNPL features fully integrated into the European instant payment infrastructure.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">EuroPA (European Payments Alliance)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Italy’s Bancomat, Spain’s Bizum, and Portugal’s SIBS created EuroPA to enable cross-border instant mobile payments across Southern Europe. By March 2025, instant transactions were live, and EPI–EuroPA collaboration was established to expand interoperability across 15 countries.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Strategic Considerations for Italian E‑Commerce Merchants</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Optimizing Payment Mix for Conversion</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Integrating local options, such as PostePay, Bancomat Pay, and SEPA transfers, alongside international methods (PayPal, cards), reduces abandonment and builds local trust.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Emphasizing Mobile-First Experience</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With mobile accounting for around 40 % of Italian e-commerce, and mobile payments growing by 61% in 2024, merchants should prioritize NFC contactless options and wallet integrations for smoother checkout.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Preparing for European Innovation and Regulation</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Merchants should monitor PSD2/3 compliance, SCA updates, and EU initiatives like Wero and EuroPA as they evolve through 2025, offering more EU-centric and sovereign payment infrastructure.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary Table: Italy’s E‑Commerce Payment Methods 2025</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><tbody><tr><td>Payment Method</td><td>Estimated Share</td><td>Key Benefits</td><td>Merchant Considerations</td></tr><tr><td>Cards (Visa, Mastercard, local)</td><td>≈ 31–33 %</td><td>High transactional value; global &amp; local support</td><td>Interchange fees; strong authentication needed</td></tr><tr><td>Digital Wallets (PayPal, PostePay, Amazon Pay, Google Pay)</td><td>≈ 35 %</td><td>Convenient, trusted, mobile‑friendly</td><td>Provider fees; integration complexity</td></tr><tr><td>Bank Transfers (SEPA, MyBank)</td><td>≈ 13 %</td><td>Secure, direct, good for mid‑value orders</td><td>Slower settlement; less familiar to foreign merchants</td></tr><tr><td>Bancomat Pay</td><td>Growing</td><td>Local debit wallet; Amazon integration</td><td>Still expanding; merchant onboarding required</td></tr><tr><td>Tap to Pay (iPhone NFC)</td><td>Emerging</td><td>Hardware-free contactless payments</td><td>Requires app/processor onboarding</td></tr><tr><td>Wero (EPI Wallet)</td><td>Launching in 2025</td><td>EU-driven, instant, QR/BNPL/Loyalty features</td><td>New adoption; tech readiness required</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Italy’s dynamic 2025 e-commerce ecosystem, there’s no one-size-fits-all payment solution. Cards and digital wallets dominate, but local favorites like PostePay and Bancomat Pay are essential for domestic appeal. Bank transfers remain a reliable option for consumers seeking direct and secure transactions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, emerging platforms like Wero and EuroPA signal a broader move toward European-controlled, interoperable payments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For merchants, success depends on offering a balanced mix of traditional, local, and modern methods—meeting Italian consumer preferences while preparing for pan-European payment innovation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shift4, the global fintech for integrated payments and commerce technology, has acquired a majority stake in Vectron Systems AG, one of Europe's largest providers of point-of-sale (POS) systems for the restaurant and hospitality verticals.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Headquartered in Germany, Vectron has some 65,000 POS across Europe, representing some €25 billion in volume opportunities with minimal payment monetization. Shift4 will acquire additional ownership of Vectron through a tender offer expected to be completed within the next month, with a delisting and formal integration process to follow shortly after that.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The acquisition will provide Shift4 with a broad European customer presence and a distribution network of 300 point-of-sale distributors. Shift4 will be able to add its integrated payment services to Vectron's existing customers and products while providing the sales force with an attractive all-in-one POS and payment solution unrivaled in Europe.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Shift4 aim is to increase its presence in Europe&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">"<a href="https://www.shift4.com/">Shift4</a> was at the forefront of the convergence between software and payments in the restaurant and hospitality industries in the United States. We see incredible demand for a similar all-in-one solution across Europe," says Jared Isaacman, CEO of Shift4. "With our integrated payments offering and SkyTab, we have the best solution at the right price.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vectron will bring valuable local expertise, infrastructure, and distribution to meet the demand. This acquisition fits perfectly into Shift4's playbook: it allows us to unlock synergies, expand our distribution, and monetize payments from a large existing install base."</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to the Vectron acquisition, Shift4 has completed its previously announced acquisition of Revel Systems. Revel has more than 18,000 merchant locations in the U.S. and the rest of the world, representing a payment opportunity of more than $17 billion. Revel also has a direct sales and distribution network of distributors that can be leveraged to accelerate SkyTab distribution domestically and abroad.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Google Pay is rolling out updates to increase its compatibility with other Google products and services, such as Android-based products or even the Chrome browser itself. The modifications are designed to improve the consumer experience when using Google Pay and make it a more competitive option against other payment methods, including integrated developer or retailer payment systems, often powered by companies such as Stripe, as well as payment services from other tech giants such as Apple, Amazon or PayPal.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Google has explained that the developments address key consumer concerns of security, convenience, and access to smart spending tools.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most attractive features being rolled out is the ability to see the benefits and rewards of each card before making a selection. “If you have multiple cards with these perks, it may take some work to determine which one has the best rewards for your purchase,” Google stated in the release. So when consumers make a purchase and click on the “Card Number” box to choose a card from a list of saved payment methods, Google Pay will display the relevant benefits accompanying each card.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This feature will initially support American Express and Capital One cards, but Google says it plans to expand to include more cards. For now, it will also only work on Chrome for desktops.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Google Pay… but not now</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another new feature is the introduction of a “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) option at checkout. Google began testing this option earlier this year, but it is now being rolled out to more Android commerce sites and apps in the U.S. The tech giant is partnering with BNPL companies for this offering, including Affirm and Zip.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At checkout, Google Pay users can sign into their existing accounts with these providers or register with a provider from the checkout screen. In addition, Google is making it easier to confirm the chosen card without having to enter its security code, a number that people often have to look up manually.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, Google will allow Chrome and Android users to verify their card details like they unlock their Android devices, which means users can verify their card with a fingerprint, facial scan or screen lock PIN.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Users can also set up a device unlock that requires the device to be unlocked before card details are displayed. This feature is designed to keep card information secure from others who may have access to the device.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Payments platform Stripe surpassed the $1 trillion mark in total payment volume in 2023, a 25% growth over the previous year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This milestone comes 15 years after the company's founding and offers insight into the finances of one of the world's largest technology companies and how fast it is growing. By comparison, PayPal surpassed $1 trillion in total payment volume in 2021, 23 years after its founding.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are currently 100 companies using their service that process $1 billion or more per year with Stripe. These companies represent around 10% of their total payment volume, but more importantly, Stripe is managing to maintain large accounts over time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, "Revenue and Finance Automation" offerings are expected to reach an annual volume of $500 million this year. These tools help companies manage billing, tax, and revenue recognition.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A competitive market for Stripe&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The company's annual letter also includes an interesting statistic about startups. Despite poor conditions for startup fundraising last year, which fell to its lowest level in six years, the Collison brothers, founders of Stripe, said the company's data indicates that startups founded in 2022 generate revenue faster than those established in 2019. In particular, artificial intelligence companies are outperforming other sectors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But not all the money derived from this ‘ai-boom’ is going through Stripe or PayPal. In fact, the e-commerce payment gateways market has quickly become incredibly competitive. Here is a short comparison of the main brands and payment solutions currently in the market.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The best payment gateways at a glance</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bizum pushes to conquer online payments by offering its services to online stores starting this month.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since May 5th, Bizum customers can use the tool to facilitate their payments in online stores. Launching the feature may take longer for some internet users, but it will help brands sell more online, and more users will opt for this shopping option.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To use Bizum to make purchases on e-commerce platforms, banks must accept incorporating the new function. The first to do so will be BBVA, where customers only have to go to the Bizum section within the bank's app and activate 'Bizum commerce payment'.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The functionality is used with a given email address, which users must use to log in to online stores. Once that is done, they can use that payment system to purchase products on the e-commerce platforms.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Bizum shopping service is free; users can check which websites have signed up for the function.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bizum, a Spanish mobile payment solution</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bizum is a payment service provider in Spain, resulting from the collaboration of 34 banking institutions in the country to create a system for instant payments between individuals and store purchases. In 2019 Bizum surpassed 6 million users. Already in August 2020, it reached 10 million users.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alongside the new online payment functionality, yesterday, Bizum also announced multiple new changes regarding the limit for sending money per day and month.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Specifically, the amount of money Bizum can send to another account in 24 hours is increased to 2,000 euros. And up to 5,000 euros in sending money within 30 or 31 days.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New monthly limit </h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As for the monthly limit, it must be used according to the limits and rules of the entity, under a maximum number of 60 operations, which are those that a user can receive at most per 30 or 31 days.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because the platform introduces new limits and changes the conditions of instant transfers between individuals, specifically, the maximum number of transactions per month between individuals has been reduced.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previously, a user could perform up to 150 transactions per month, but with the new conditions imposed by the platform, he will only be able to perform 60 transactions per month.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This limit will only apply to payments between individuals; therefore, a person with Bizum can receive a maximum of 60 Bizum per month but can send as many as he/she wants. In addition, the banks can further reduce the maximum of 60 monthly transactions if they deem it necessary.</p>
