
Google Pay is rolling out updates to increase its compatibility with other Google products and services, such as Android-based products or even the Chrome browser itself. The modifications are designed to improve the consumer experience when using Google Pay and make it a more competitive option against other payment methods, including integrated developer or retailer payment systems, often powered by companies such as Stripe, as well as payment services from other tech giants such as Apple, Amazon or PayPal.
Google has explained that the developments address key consumer concerns of security, convenience, and access to smart spending tools.
One of the most attractive features being rolled out is the ability to see the benefits and rewards of each card before making a selection. “If you have multiple cards with these perks, it may take some work to determine which one has the best rewards for your purchase,” Google stated in the release. So when consumers make a purchase and click on the “Card Number” box to choose a card from a list of saved payment methods, Google Pay will display the relevant benefits accompanying each card.
This feature will initially support American Express and Capital One cards, but Google says it plans to expand to include more cards. For now, it will also only work on Chrome for desktops.
Another new feature is the introduction of a “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) option at checkout. Google began testing this option earlier this year, but it is now being rolled out to more Android commerce sites and apps in the U.S. The tech giant is partnering with BNPL companies for this offering, including Affirm and Zip.
At checkout, Google Pay users can sign into their existing accounts with these providers or register with a provider from the checkout screen. In addition, Google is making it easier to confirm the chosen card without having to enter its security code, a number that people often have to look up manually.
Instead, Google will allow Chrome and Android users to verify their card details like they unlock their Android devices, which means users can verify their card with a fingerprint, facial scan or screen lock PIN.
Users can also set up a device unlock that requires the device to be unlocked before card details are displayed. This feature is designed to keep card information secure from others who may have access to the device.
