In an interesting move, Dutch logistics company PostNL has decided to open its network of parcel lockers to other carriers starting in 2023.

🔥Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!🔥

This will coincide with PostNL's plans to expand its network of 400 parcel lockers to 1,500 lockers by 2024 across the Netherlands.

In fact, PostNL has been expanding its network for some time already. Just this summer PostNL opened 350 new pick-up points in Belgium. Now it has announced plans of expanding its automated parcel locker network.

A new PostNL platform for parcel locker sharing

Currently, PostNL has over 400 lockers in several locations and most of these lockers are available to customers 24/7.

The idea of the company is to provide access to these 24/7 lockers to all other carriers operating in the Netherlands, as long as they fulfill a registration via a new online PostNL platform.

It is indeed using this future online platform, that the locker will be accessible to other carriers.

With the new platform, consumers will be able to pick up parcels from multiple carriers at one location. Carriers who want to use PostNL’s network, will need to pay a fee when booking a locker.

The fee depends on locker size and the number of days that a package stays inside the locker.

By 2024, the company wants to expand its network to 1,500 lockers across the country. The goal of the expansion is to make lockers accessible to more Dutch consumers.

Last year, e-commerce logistics was responsible for 34 percent. This percentage increased by 8 percent this year, to a total of 42 percent of the total revenue.

According to PostNL, the company’s performance in the first quarter of 2018 was below the first quarter of the year before. However, the revenue in Q1 was five million euros more than it was in the same period last year. PostNL generated 875 million euros in revenue in the first three months of 2018. In general, PostNL says to be satisfied with the situation and they look forward to the future.

The Dutch company expects that half of the turnover will be related to e-commerce in 2020. CEO of the postal company, Herna Verhagen, says the following words about the subject: "We continue to make good progress in our transformation to be the supplier of postal and logistics solutions in the Benelux. Currently, 42 percent of our revenue is now related to e-commerce, which shows that we are on track to our 2020 ambition of more than 50 percent."

PostNL showed strong volume growth in the parcel division. They say this volume growth is a good reflection of their solid position in the postal market of the Benelux.
