Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop are facing renewed scrutiny over product safety after a Reuters investigation found more than 20 skin-lightening products previously identified as containing prohibited levels of mercury still being offered through major online marketplaces.

Published on September 16, the investigation found that products appearing on banned-product lists were still available to consumers through Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop in the United States, as well as through Amazon’s third-party marketplaces in France, India, the United Arab Emirates and Belgium.

Reuters noted an important limitation: it could not independently confirm that every product currently listed still contained mercury. However, regulators and public-health authorities had previously tested or identified several products as containing prohibited levels of the toxic metal.

The findings raise a broader question for global e-commerce: how effectively can large marketplaces prevent unsafe products from reappearing when they are sold by third-party merchants operating across multiple jurisdictions?

Mercury skin-lightening products remain available online

The Reuters investigation identified more than 20 products available online that had appeared on banned-product or warning lists because of mercury concerns. Some were still being offered despite years of international restrictions.

Mercury is sometimes added to skin-lightening products because it suppresses melanin production, but exposure can cause serious health effects. The US Food and Drug Administration warns that repeated use of mercury-containing skin products can lead to kidney damage, neurological problems and other potentially permanent health consequences.

The FDA also states that mercury is not permitted in cosmetics except under very limited circumstances that do not apply to these products.

Reuters found products across several countries

The problem is not confined to one marketplace or one jurisdiction. Reuters found suspect products available through marketplace listings accessible in:

The United States

France

Belgium

India

The United Arab Emirates

That geographic spread matters for cross-border commerce. Products sold by third-party merchants can move quickly between markets, while seller identities, product names, and listings can change.

This makes enforcement more difficult because a product removed from one platform or seller account may later reappear under another name or through another merchant. Reuters reported that some listings also failed to disclose mercury in their ingredient information.

The core issue is marketplace seller oversight

The investigation highlights one of the most persistent challenges facing global marketplaces. Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop do not manufacture most of the products sold by third-party sellers.

Instead, they provide the platform, payments infrastructure, traffic and, in some cases, fulfillment. That model creates enormous product selection and international reach.

It also creates a regulatory challenge. Platforms must monitor millions of listings and large numbers of independent merchants while attempting to identify products that may be unsafe, illegal or mislabelled.

The scale of the marketplace model makes manual review impossible, meaning platforms rely heavily on automated systems, seller verification, regulatory databases and consumer reports. The Reuters findings suggest that these systems do not always prevent prohibited products from reappearing.

Amazon, Temu and TikTok say prohibited products are not allowed

The platforms involved maintain policies banning illegal or dangerous products. Reuters reported that the companies said they prohibit products that violate applicable safety rules and take action when they identify problematic listings.

Marketplace policies alone, however, do not guarantee that unsafe products will never appear. The more important question for regulators is whether platforms have effective systems to identify risks, verify sellers and prevent previously removed products from being relisted. That distinction is becoming increasingly important in Europe.

EU rules are placing greater responsibility on marketplaces

The European Union has significantly increased obligations for online marketplaces through the Digital Services Act and the General Product Safety Regulation.

Under the Digital Services Act, marketplaces must make reasonable efforts to verify traders, improve product traceability and reduce the circulation of illegal products. The European Commission says marketplaces must also check that products offered through their services are safe and compliant.

If a marketplace becomes aware that an illegal product has been sold, it must also inform affected customers, identify the seller and provide information about possible remedies. These rules increasingly shift regulatory focus away from individual sellers and toward the systems marketplaces operate.

Temu is already under EU scrutiny over illegal products

Temu is already facing regulatory scrutiny in Europe over product safety. In July 2025, the European Commission preliminarily found that Temu had breached its obligations under the Digital Services Act by failing to properly assess the risk of illegal products being sold on its marketplace.

The Commission's own mystery-shopping exercise found a high risk that consumers would encounter non-compliant products, including toys and small electronics. That investigation makes the Reuters findings especially relevant.

The issue is no longer simply whether an individual unsafe product appears online. Regulators are increasingly examining whether marketplace systems are structurally capable of preventing illegal goods from repeatedly reaching consumers.

EU enforcement is becoming more aggressive

The European Commission has already demonstrated that failures around illegal products can result in significant penalties. In July 2026, the Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for breaches of the Digital Services Act related to the dissemination of illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products.

The Commission concluded that AliExpress had failed to adequately assess and mitigate the risks created by illegal products on its platform. That enforcement action established an important precedent. Large marketplaces are expected to show they have systematic safeguards in place, rather than simply removing individual products after problems are reported.

For Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop, the Reuters investigation therefore arrives at a time when European regulators are already demanding stronger marketplace accountability.

Product relisting remains a major challenge

One of the biggest technical problems is preventing products from returning after they have been removed.

A seller can potentially:

Change the product title

Alter the images

Use a different seller account

Modify the product description

Move the listing to another marketplace

Slightly change packaging or branding

This makes enforcement a continuous process rather than a one-time removal. Platforms increasingly use machine learning and product-matching systems to identify duplicate or suspicious listings.

But cross-border marketplaces also have to deal with inconsistent product information, different languages and sellers operating from multiple countries. The Reuters investigation suggests that prohibited products can still bypass these controls.

Unsafe products create a cross-border enforcement problem

Traditional product-safety regulation is largely national. E-commerce is not. A product can be manufactured in one country, sold by a merchant in another and delivered to a consumer somewhere else entirely.

That creates gaps between different regulatory systems. The FDA, for example, can issue warnings and take enforcement action in the United States. European authorities can impose separate restrictions.

But sellers can still attempt to reach consumers through marketplaces operating globally. Reuters reported that regulators and public-health organizations have increasingly called for stronger international cooperation to address the problem. For cross-border e-commerce, this is becoming one of the most difficult compliance challenges.

Why mercury-containing cosmetics are especially concerning

The health risks associated with mercury make these products particularly serious. The FDA says mercury exposure can affect the nervous system and kidneys and may cause symptoms including tremors, memory problems and changes in vision or hearing.

Exposure can also affect other people living in the same household because mercury may contaminate towels, clothing and other surfaces. The FDA specifically warns that children and pregnant individuals can be particularly vulnerable.

This makes the issue substantially more serious than conventional marketplace problems such as inaccurate product descriptions or counterfeit branding. Unsafe cosmetics can create direct public-health consequences.

Marketplace compliance is becoming a competitive issue

The investigation also highlights how product safety could increasingly affect competition between marketplaces. Consumers typically choose platforms based on factors such as:

Price

Selection

Delivery speed

Convenience

Returns

Regulators are increasingly adding another requirement: trust. A marketplace that cannot effectively verify its sellers or products may face greater enforcement costs, reputational damage and stricter regulatory oversight. Large platforms therefore have a commercial incentive to improve product-safety controls beyond simply satisfying regulators.

Third-party marketplaces face growing responsibility

The broader direction of regulation is clear. Governments increasingly expect marketplaces to take responsibility for the ecosystem they operate. That does not mean platforms are automatically responsible for every illegal product offered by an independent merchant.

But regulators increasingly expect them to demonstrate effective seller verification, product monitoring and rapid removal systems. The European Commission's current approach under the DSA illustrates this shift particularly clearly. Large marketplaces must assess systemic risks and show that their mitigation measures are effective.

Cross-border e-commerce makes enforcement harder

The rapid international growth of platforms such as Temu, TikTok Shop and Amazon Marketplace makes the challenge even larger. A seller can potentially reach customers across dozens of markets without maintaining physical retail operations in those countries.

This greatly expands opportunities for SMEs and manufacturers. But it also allows problematic products to spread quickly across borders. Regulators are therefore attempting to make marketplaces part of the enforcement infrastructure.

Instead of monitoring every overseas seller individually, authorities increasingly require platforms to verify who is selling and what is being offered.

The Reuters investigation exposes a persistent marketplace weakness

The presence of previously flagged mercury products on some of the world's largest e-commerce platforms shows how difficult product-safety enforcement remains. Amazon, Temu and TikTok Shop all have systems intended to prevent prohibited products from being sold. Yet unsafe or previously identified products can still reappear.

For marketplaces, the challenge is no longer simply removing listings when regulators identify them. The next stage is preventing those products from returning under new sellers, names or packaging. As regulators strengthen rules around seller verification and product traceability, this issue is likely to become increasingly important for cross-border e-commerce.

The Reuters investigation ultimately highlights a central tension in the marketplace model. The same open infrastructure that allows millions of third-party sellers to reach global consumers also makes it difficult to guarantee that every product offered is safe and compliant. For regulators, platforms and consumers, solving that problem is becoming one of the defining challenges of global marketplace commerce.

TikTok Shop is no longer a speculative experiment in Europe. It is rapidly becoming a viable and scalable sales channel, particularly in key markets such as Germany. Recent data show that a growing share of online shoppers has already completed purchases on the platform, signaling a shift in how consumers discover and buy products.

What began as a content-driven entertainment platform is now evolving into a fully integrated commerce ecosystem, where product discovery, engagement, and purchase happen within a single environment. This convergence is redefining the traditional eCommerce funnel.

From Discovery to Purchase: A Seamless Funnel

One of TikTok Shop’s biggest advantages is its ability to shorten the customer journey. Instead of moving users across multiple touchpoints—ads, websites, checkout pages—TikTok enables transactions directly within the app.

Key elements of the TikTok Shop model

Native product listings embedded in videos

Livestream shopping with real-time interaction

Creator-led recommendations and affiliate selling

In-app checkout reduces friction

This model turns passive scrolling into instant purchasing behavior, significantly shortening the path to conversion.

Why Europe Is Catching Up Fast

While social commerce has been more mature in Asia, Europe is now experiencing accelerated adoption driven by several factors.

Changing consumer behavior

Younger audiences, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are increasingly comfortable purchasing directly through social platforms. For them, content is commerce, and the distinction between entertainment and shopping is fading.

Mobile-first engagement

TikTok’s mobile-native design aligns perfectly with current consumption habits. European users are spending more time on mobile devices, making in-app purchasing a natural extension of their behavior.

Trust in creators

Influencers and creators play a central role in driving conversions. Their recommendations often carry more weight than traditional advertising, leading to higher engagement and purchase intent.

What This Means for Brands and Retailers

TikTok Shop’s growth presents both opportunities and challenges for e-commerce players.

New revenue channels

Brands can unlock additional sales by tapping into:

Creator partnerships

Viral product exposure

Livestream commerce events

Shift in marketing strategy

Performance marketing is evolving. Instead of focusing solely on paid ads, brands must now invest in:

Content creation

Creator collaborations

Community engagement

Operational implications

Selling on TikTok Shop requires:

Real-time inventory management

Fast fulfillment capabilities

Adaptation to impulse-driven demand patterns

Companies that fail to align operations with this model risk losing competitiveness.

The Competitive Impact on Traditional eCommerce

The rise of TikTok Shop is beginning to challenge traditional e-commerce platforms and marketplaces.

Disruption of the search-based model

Classic eCommerce relies heavily on intent-driven search. TikTok, by contrast, is discovery-driven. Products are surfaced algorithmically, often before users even realize they want them.

Pressure on marketplaces

Established players must now compete with:

Faster product discovery

More engaging content formats

Built-in entertainment value

This could lead to increased investment in video commerce and social features across traditional platforms.

The Role of Data and Algorithms

TikTok’s recommendation engine is a critical driver of its success. By leveraging user behavior data, the platform delivers highly personalized product suggestions.

This results in:

Higher conversion rates

Increased average order value

More frequent purchases

Unlike traditional eCommerce, where users actively search, TikTok predicts demand before it is expressed, fundamentally changing the dynamics of online retail.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite its rapid growth, TikTok Shop in Europe still faces several hurdles.

Regulatory environment

European regulations around data privacy and consumer protection are stricter than in other regions. Compliance will be essential for sustained growth.

Logistics complexity

Scaling fulfillment across multiple European countries introduces operational challenges, particularly for cross-border sellers.

Consumer trust

While adoption is growing, some consumers remain cautious about:

Product quality

Seller reliability

Return processes

Building trust will be critical for long-term success.

The Future of TikTok Shop in Europe

TikTok Shop’s early traction suggests that social commerce is entering a new phase of maturity in Europe. As the platform continues to expand its capabilities and seller ecosystem, its influence on the broader eCommerce landscape will intensify.

Key developments to watch include:

Expansion into additional European markets

Deeper integration with logistics and fulfillment providers

Growth of creator-driven commerce ecosystems

TikTok Shop is reshaping the European eCommerce landscape by merging content, community, and commerce into a single experience. Its rapid adoption demonstrates that consumers are ready for a new way of shopping—one that is interactive, personalized, and entertainment-driven.

For brands and retailers, the message is clear: adapting to this shift is no longer optional. Those who embrace social commerce early will be better positioned to capture the next wave of digital retail growth.

TikTok has completed its transformation from an entertainment-first social network into a fully fledged e-commerce platform in the U.S. With the consolidation and rapid expansion of TikTok Shop, the company is now positioning itself as a serious competitor to established online marketplaces, particularly in the United States.

This shift marks a structural change in how digital commerce, content, and social influence converge into a single transactional ecosystem.

TikTok Shop and the Evolution of Social Commerce

TikTok Shop integrates product discovery, promotion, and checkout directly into the app. Users can now move seamlessly from watching short-form videos or live streams to completing a purchase without leaving the platform.

This native commerce model significantly reduces friction in the buying journey. Instead of redirecting traffic to external webshops, brands can convert attention into sales instantly, leveraging impulse buying and creator-driven recommendations.

Rapid Growth in the U.S. Market

The United States has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for TikTok Shop. During significant shopping periods such as seasonal sales and promotional campaigns, the platform has recorded strong gross merchandise value growth and rising order volumes.

Several factors explain this acceleration:

Algorithm-Driven Product Discovery

TikTok’s recommendation engine exposes products organically through content rather than search. Products gain visibility based on engagement, relevance, and creator performance, not purely on advertising spend.

Live Shopping as a Conversion Engine

Live shopping streams have become a central driver of sales. Hosts demonstrate products in real time, answer questions, and create urgency through limited-time offers, replicating and modernizing the TV shopping experience for mobile audiences.

Creator-Led Trust and Authenticity

Purchases are often driven by creators rather than brands themselves. This peer-style recommendation model builds credibility and shortens decision cycles, particularly among younger demographics.

Why Major Brands Are Investing in TikTok Shop

Large consumer brands are no longer treating TikTok Shop as an experimental channel. Many are building dedicated internal roles and teams focused exclusively on TikTok commerce operations.

These investments typically focus on:

Dedicated TikTok Shop Management

Brands are appointing specialists to manage product listings, pricing strategies, fulfillment coordination, and compliance with TikTok Shop requirements.

Creator and Affiliate Ecosystems

Rather than relying solely on paid ads, brands are building scalable creator affiliate programs in which influencers earn commissions on sales, aligning incentives across content and conversions.

Performance-Driven Content Production

Content is increasingly designed with commerce outcomes in mind. Short videos and live sessions are optimized not just for views, but for click-through rates, conversion, and average order value.

Strategic Implications for the E-Commerce Industry

TikTok’s rise as a shopping platform signals a broader shift in e-commerce dynamics.

From Search-Based to Discovery-Based Commerce

Traditional e-commerce relies heavily on user intent and search behavior. TikTok flips this model by driving demand through discovery, entertainment, and algorithmic exposure.

Blurring the Line Between Marketing and Sales

On TikTok Shop, content is no longer just a top-of-funnel activity. Marketing, product demonstration, and checkout exist in the same environment, compressing the entire funnel into a single experience.

Increased Pressure on Marketplaces and DTC Brands

As TikTok captures both traffic and transactions, established marketplaces and direct-to-consumer brands face increased competition for consumer attention, creator partnerships, and advertising budgets.

TikTok Shop as a Long-Term Commerce Channel

TikTok’s continued investment in logistics partnerships, seller tools, analytics, and creator monetization suggests that TikTok Shop is not a short-term experiment. It is evolving into a core pillar of the platform’s business model.

For brands, this means TikTok is no longer optional within an e-commerce strategy. It represents a new platform category where content, community, and commerce are inseparably linked, redefining how products are discovered, promoted, and sold at scale.

TikTok Shop has achieved a significant milestone in the U.S. e-commerce market. During the 2025 Black Friday to Cyber Monday period, the platform generated more than 500 million dollars in U.S. sales. This marks a dramatic increase compared to the previous year, when holiday sales were closer to $ 100 million. The result demonstrates the rising power of content-driven commerce in the United States.

While TikTok Shop’s sales represent only a fraction of the more than $ 44 billion spent online in the U.S. during Cyber Week, the platform’s rapid growth signals a growing shift in consumer behavior. Shoppers are increasingly discovering and buying products directly inside short-form video platforms without leaving the app.

What TikTok Shop’s Growth Reveals About Consumer Behavior

TikTok Shop’s holiday success proves that social commerce is becoming a mainstream purchasing channel. Instead of the traditional browsing path in an online store, users discover products through videos, creator recommendations, and livestreams. This reduces friction between discovery and purchase, making it easier for consumers to buy impulsively or on the spot.

For many shoppers, TikTok has become both an entertainment hub and a product discovery engine. The platform’s ability to merge these experiences is key to its growth.

Major Brands Are Now Embracing TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop’s momentum isn’t driven only by small sellers anymore. Major brands such as Ralph Lauren, Samsung US, and Disney Store participated in the platform’s holiday promotions. Their involvement signals confidence in TikTok as a legitimate e-commerce channel and not just an advertising platform.

TikTok supported this momentum with an extended holiday campaign that began in mid-November. It focused on livestream shopping events, expanded product discovery, and exclusive deals, all designed to push users toward in-app purchases.

Social Commerce Becomes a Competitive Force

The rise of TikTok Shop reflects a broader industry shift toward social commerce. Unlike traditional e-commerce websites, platforms like TikTok integrate discovery, promotion, and checkout into one seamless flow. This model is especially effective at reaching younger consumers who prefer mobile-native, creator-driven experiences.

Social commerce is projected to become one of the fastest-growing segments of the retail industry. TikTok Shop is positioned as a major driver of that expansion.

Challenges TikTok Shop Must Overcome

Despite its rapid growth, TikTok Shop still competes in a market dominated by giants like Amazon. The platform’s 500-million-dollar performance, while impressive, remains small compared to Amazon’s tens of billions in annual holiday revenue.

Security, trust, and product quality control also remain challenges. Ensuring consistent seller standards will be critical as TikTok scales its marketplace and attracts more mainstream consumers.

Why TikTok Shop Matters for Brands

Brands are increasingly exploring TikTok Shop as a strategic channel for:

Livestream shopping sessions with real-time audience interaction

Short-form video campaigns that showcase products in an engaging way

Creator partnerships that provide authenticity and social proof

Integrated in-app checkout that minimizes friction

These capabilities allow brands to combine storytelling with immediate purchasing, a powerful formula for both engagement and conversions.

The Future of TikTok Shop in U.S. E-Commerce

TikTok Shop’s strong holiday performance highlights the potential of social commerce to reshape the online retail landscape. As TikTok continues to refine its shopping tools and attract more brands, the platform is likely to grow into a permanent and influential player in U.S. e-commerce.

For businesses focused on young, trend-driven, mobile-first consumers, TikTok Shop may soon become an essential channel for both visibility and sales.

OpenAI has doubled down on its ambitions in generative AI, specifically in video. On September 30, 2025, the company unveiled Sora 2, its next-generation audio and video model, alongside a brand new social app — Sora — built to enable users to create, share, and remix AI-generated clips in a TikTok-style feed.

Below, we break down what Sora 2 offers, explain how the Sora app works, and outline the opportunities and risks it presents.

What Is Sora 2? The Evolution of OpenAI’s Video Model

From Sora to Sora 2

OpenAI’s original Sora model, released in December 2024, allowed users to generate short video clips from text prompts with moderate realism, but with limitations in physics, consistency, and synchronized audio.

Sora 2 represents a significant leap forward, focusing on:

Physical realism and temporal consistency: better modeling of collisions, momentum, buoyancy, gravity, and interactions so that actions appear natural.

Synchronized audio and dialogue: speech, ambient sound, and effects are more closely aligned to visual motion.

Steerability and stylistic control: users can specify camera moves, shot types, tempo, and visual style.

Multi-shot consistency and scene coherence: characters, lighting, and dynamics remain stable across shots, reducing abrupt transitions.

According to OpenAI, Sora 2 “improves compliance with the laws of physics and temporal consistency.” For example, when a basketball player misses a shot, the ball bounces realistically off the rim rather than appearing inside the basket.

The Sora App: A TikTok-Style Layer over AI Video

The Sora app is the public-facing platform that makes Sora 2 accessible to creators and viewers in a familiar vertical video format.

Key Features

Vertical swipe feed
The app is designed with a TikTok-like interface: vertical videos, swipe navigation, and a personalized feed algorithm based on user activity, location, post interaction, and optionally ChatGPT history.

Cameos (self-insertion)
Users can submit a one-time verified video and audio recording of themselves. Once approved, they can authorize friends to include their likeness in generated videos. The system notifies users whenever their likeness is used, and co-ownership rules allow them to revoke access at any time.

Remix and collaboration tools
Users can remix trending videos or contribute elements such as scenes, audio, or styles to collaborative trends.

Content length and format

Current clips are limited to 10 seconds.

No uploads from the camera roll are supported; all content must be generated within the app.

Audio is integrated, allowing prompts with speech or typed instructions to generate matching sound design.

Access and pricing

The app launches first on iOS, invitation-only, starting in the United States and Canada. Global expansion is planned.

Basic use is free, with extra charges for additional generations during high demand.

ChatGPT Pro subscribers gain access to Sora 2 Pro without an invitation.

Why Sora 2 and the Sora App Matter

Creative opportunities

Lower barrier to video creation: no need for cameras or editing software, just a prompt.

New storytelling formats: cinematic scenes, music videos, or surreal crossovers are now within reach.

Prompt engineering becomes a creative skill.

Social virality: the remix and cameo features encourage collaborative trends.

Risks and challenges

Misuse of likenesses: despite safeguards, a risk of deepfakes, impersonation, and non-consensual content remains.

Copyright disputes: questions remain about training data and whether copyrighted works were included.

Content moderation: OpenAI bans impersonations of public figures and explicit material, but enforcement may face challenges.

Disinformation: realistic AI-generated clips could make it harder to distinguish between genuine and artificial media.

Use Cases and Early Demos

To showcase improvements, OpenAI released clips of beach volleyball, skateboarding, and diving into a pool, highlighting more natural motion and synchronized audio. Other demos include gymnastic routines, paddleboard tricks with buoyancy modeling, and figure skating with consistent character motion.

Users report fewer visual glitches, smoother frame transitions, and more natural interactions compared to the original Sora.

OpenAI’s launch of Sora 2 and the Sora app marks a significant milestone in AI video generation. By combining technical improvements in physics, sound, and consistency with a social media layer, OpenAI is moving generative video closer to mainstream use.

The challenge will be balancing creativity with ethics, ensuring that safety and privacy measures keep pace with the growing realism of AI-generated content.

TikTok has emerged as a transformative force in the fashion industry, revolutionizing how consumers discover, engage with, and purchase fashion products. In 2024, the platform's influence on global fashion sales has been profound, driven by its unique blend of short-form video content, influencer marketing, and integrated shopping features.

The Explosive Growth of TikTok Shop

TikTok’s Global Fashion Revenue in 2024

TikTok Shop's global gross merchandise value (GMV) soared to $33.2 billion in 2024—more than double the previous year. The United States became its largest market, contributing $9 billion, a 650% increase in just 16 months since the launch of TikTok Shop U.S. in September 2023.

Fashion as a Leading Sales Category

In the U.S., fashion items (clothing and accessories) were the most purchased products on TikTok Shop, highlighting the platform’s dominant role in fashion e-commerce.

How Viral Content Drives Fashion Trends

What This Means for Fashion Brands

Key Strategies for Success on TikTok

Fashion brands aiming to ride the TikTok wave should consider:

Authentic Content Creation: Partner with micro- and macro-influencers to generate organic engagement.

Leverage TikTok Shop: Make purchasing easy by integrating your store directly into the platform.

Track Trends in Real Time: Use TikTok’s discover page to jump on viral fashion moments.

Use Data to Your Advantage: Analyze TikTok metrics to refine your targeting and content strategies.

TikTok is not just a social platform—it’s a global sales engine for the fashion industry. As TikTok Shop continues to expand and more users turn to the app for style inspiration, its role in shaping fashion sales will only grow. Brands that embrace this shift will stand to gain visibility, loyalty, and revenue in a rapidly evolving digital marketplace.

TikTok Shop has launched a new logistics feature to optimize and streamline shipments and the platform emailed sellers to say they can try this package collection service for free until next April.

Specifically, concerning delivery and collection options, the platform explains that sellers have two alternatives for managing their shipments: delivery points, where they can take packages to post offices, and warehouse collection, where a carrier will pick up orders directly from the seller's warehouse.

In the latter case, the platform has assured that the account will initially be assigned to GLS. However, “TikTok reserves the right to assign another carrier according to its internal rules”.

To activate this new feature, sellers must go to the 'Seller Center' and set their preference in the 'Pickup Method Settings' section.

TikTok free package collection service ‘costs’

In this context, the platform has emphasized that “sellers who opt for warehouse collection must guarantee a minimum of five packages per collection.” If this threshold is not reached, a charge of €1.90 per package (excluding VAT) will be applied, and starting in May, it will be invoiced at the end of the month. This fee will cover the logistical costs of low-volume collections.

Once the seller updates their settings on the platform, their account will be assigned to GLS and the shipping labels will be automatically modified to reflect this change. At this point, TikTok Shop has explained that “packages with Correos labels still pending must be delivered to the corresponding offices, without this update affecting said shipments.”

As for shipping costs, TikTok Shop has assured that the rates for sellers will remain unchanged, as long as the minimum threshold of packages per collection is met. In addition, delivery times will stay at 2 to 3 working days, so there will be no delays in the distribution of orders.

TikTok Shop Conditions

On the other hand, sellers who opt for warehouse pickup cannot leave their packages at a GLS pickup point, as their account will be configured explicitly for this method. Likewise, buyers cannot choose the carrier, as this is assigned directly by TikTok Shop to each seller.

As a general rule, the platform has indicated that for labels generated before 1:00 p.m., “pick-ups will be automatically scheduled for the same day between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. This could be adjusted depending on the location of the warehouse.”

At the time of collection, sellers can hand over all packages ready, regardless of when they were processed. TikTok Shop has reminded sellers to contact the support team via a ticket in the Seller Center for any questions or assistance.

Over the past five years, TikTok has experienced explosive global expansion, solidifying its position as one of the most influential social media platforms. With its engaging short-form video content and sophisticated algorithm, the app has attracted billions of users worldwide, driving its success in markets across North America, Europe, and Asia.

However, this rapid growth has also sparked government concerns regarding data privacy, misinformation, and national security. As a result, several countries have imposed bans or restrictions on TikTok, citing threats ranging from cyber risks to social instability. While some prohibitions have been lifted after negotiations or policy changes, others remain in effect, creating an ongoing debate over the platform's future accessibility in different regions.

TikTok bans in different regions

However, success in SEA was not without challenges. Indonesia temporarily banned the platform, citing monopoly concerns, while the Philippines imposed strict regulations. A relaunch in the Philippines, through a merger with Tokopedia (under the brand name “Shopedia”), demonstrated TikTok's resilience.

In 2023, TikTok Shop expanded to the United States, but plans for a wider rollout in Europe faced delays. Challenges in SEA and high operating costs in Europe are cited as possible reasons for these difficulties. Even so, the service launched in Spain and Ireland in late 2024.

Here is a table summarizing notable TikTok bans, including the region, year of implementation, and current status:

Region

Year

Status

India

2020

Not lifted

Indonesia

2018

Lifted

Pakistan

2020

Lifted

Afghanistan

2022

Not lifted

Somalia

2023

Not lifted

Nepal

2023

Lifted

Albania

2025

Not lifted

United States

2025

Not lifted

India: In June 2020, India imposed a nationwide ban on TikTok due to national security concerns amid border tensions with China. The ban remains in effect.

Indonesia: In July 2018, Indonesia temporarily banned TikTok, citing concerns over content promoting pornography and blasphemy. The ban was lifted after TikTok agreed to censor inappropriate content.

Pakistan: Between October 2020 and November 2021, Pakistan imposed and subsequently lifted four bans on TikTok, primarily due to concerns over immoral and indecent content.

Afghanistan: In April 2022, the Taliban government banned TikTok, stating that the platform was misleading the younger generation. The ban remains in place.

Somalia: In August 2023, Somalia banned TikTok, Telegram, and 1XBet, citing concerns over the spread of horrific content and misinformation. The ban has not been lifted.

Nepal: In November 2023, Nepal banned TikTok due to concerns over social harmony being disrupted by app misuse. The ban was lifted in August 2024 after an agreement between TikTok and the government to monitor misuse.

Albania: In December 2024, Albania announced a one-year ban on TikTok following a fatal incident linked to the platform. The ban is currently in effect.

United States: In January 2025, the United States implemented a ban on TikTok due to security concerns related to its Chinese ownership. The ban remains in place.

What about TikTok Shop?

TikTok, the social media giant owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, Ltd., has been steadily expanding its shopping functionality, TikTok Shop, with ambitious plans for 2025.

Launched in April 2021, TikTok Shop integrates e-commerce directly into the app, allowing users to buy products while watching videos and live streams.

Originally inspired by Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, this functionality has grown to cater to a global audience. With 1.6 billion registered users as of April 2024, the potential reach of this functionality is immense.

TikTok Shop debuted in Indonesia in 2021, followed by the UK, marking its entry into international e-commerce. By 2023, the platform had become a significant player in Southeast Asia (SEA), with markets such as Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia contributing significantly to the $20 billion in GMV (Gross Merchandise Value).

TikTok Shop plans for a global expansion

TikTok Shop has set ambitious goals for 2025. With projections to reach $75 million in GMV, more than triple 2023 revenues, ByteDance is focusing on new markets in Europe, including Germany, France and Italy, while exploring opportunities in Latin America, starting with Mexico, where pilot tests are already underway.

The global expansion could further increase the appeal of TikTok, allowing content creators to monetize their platforms more effectively. However, uncertainties remain. In the United States, the ongoing Supreme Court case on a possible ban on TikTok under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act represents a significant risk, which could hamper the growth of TikTok Shop in one of its largest markets.

Amidst the company's challenges and strategic moves, many TikTok users are eagerly awaiting the global expansion of TikTok Shop. If successful, the platform could redefine online commerce, offering a perfect blend of entertainment and e-commerce.

As ByteDance extends its reach, it remains to be seen whether TikTok will be able to navigate the regulatory, economic, and competitive hurdles to cement its status as a global e-commerce leader.

TikTok faces a hard deadline in January. A U.S. federal appeals court has upheld the initial order forcing the social network TikTok to sever all ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, by January 2025, because “this relationship poses a threat to national security and the security of Americans, whose data could end up in the hands of the Asian powerhouse without permission.

The three judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia District have disregarded TikTok's request to appeal the matter by insisting that the initial order against the platform—translated into a law signed in April by U.S. President Joe Biden and endorsed by the U.S. Congress—“withstands constitutional scrutiny.”

“The First Amendment exists to protect free speech in the United States,” Justice Douglas Ginsburg has made known in expressing the court's majority opinion on this order. “The Government has acted solely to protect that freedom from a foreign adversary nation and to limit that adversary's ability to collect data on persons in the United States,” adds the brief in a decision that will almost certainly take this case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

TikTok bets on the Supreme Court

If TikTok decides to appeal to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the country will have to rule before the order goes into effect on January 19. If it decides to hear the case, the order will be suspended until a final decision. A statement published by the company on its website immediately after the rejection of its appeal confirms that TikTok intends to present its case before the Supreme Court, “a court with a proven track record of protecting Americans' right to free speech".

“We hope it will do the same in this important constitutional matter. Unfortunately, the TikTok ban was conceived and pushed based on inaccurate, faulty, and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people. The TikTok ban, unless stopped, will silence the voices of more than 170 million Americans here in the U.S. and around the world on January 19, 2025,” TikTok denounces in that statement.

According to The New York Times, civil penalties would be imposed on app stores that distribute or update TikTok, such as Apple's and Google's. The app is already on millions of phones in the United States, but restricting updates will likely undermine users' ability to access it. This would be complemented by a measure prohibiting web hosting companies from helping distribute the app.

TikTok Shop recorded sales of more than 100 million dollars (around 95.5 million euros) during Black Friday in the US, marking a milestone in its foray into the US market. This success reaffirms the social network's commitment to live shopping, a strategy that has proven to be a key economic driver in markets such as China.

Since its launch in the fall of 2023 in the U.S., TikTok Shop has encouraged creators and sellers to adopt the live-streaming format to drive e-commerce. As Nico Le Bourgeois, TikTok Shop's head of U.S. operations, told Business Insider, the company is looking to transform the digital shopping experience: “We want people to discover new products, to make shopping different. If we can get more customers to shop live and be surprised by the experience, we will have accomplished our goal.”

Most popular categories and retailer success

Black Friday saw more than 30,000 live streams, with home goods, fashion, and beauty products positioning themselves as consumers' favorite categories. One prominent example was Canvas Beauty, a hair care brand that reached $1 million in sales just two hours after going live on TikTok Shop.

The deals campaign allowed large brands and SMEs to stand out with exclusive promotions and product launches. One-third of the purchases made during this campaign benefited small and medium-sized businesses.

In addition, many sellers are using the platform as an alternative to diversify their revenues against giants such as Amazon. As published by CNBC, during a recent conference for Amazon sellers, TikTok Shop was a central topic, attracting great interest among attendees. “Amazon is saturated with competition,” noted e-commerce expert Rafay MH, noting that TikTok offers a ”free opportunity to connect and sell directly.”

Heading into the holiday season, a Salesforce report predicts that 20% of online holiday shopping in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada will be done through platforms such as TikTok Shop, Shein and Temu.

TikTok's U.S. future is in danger
