The Swedish e-commerce market has increased only a little during last year, being worth 14.5 billion euros at the end of 2017. This means an increase of 4.1 percent, just 400.000 euro compared to 2016. This is what can be concluded in the Swedish e-commerce report by the E-commerce Foundation, focusing on 2017. While growth is only small, it still surpasses what was expected for 2017 by some research institutions. For 2018, the market is expected to grow to 16.2 billion euros, increasing 15.4 percent.

Growing markets
According to the report, about 81 percent of the total online population in Sweden are e-shoppers. This means these people have been buying online at least once in the last year. It is expected that this percentage will rise to 86 percent in 2018. On average, an online Swedish shopper spent 1,862.12 euros last year. The category that is most popular for online shopping, based on data from Statista, are (children's) items and toys, which showed a 23 percent growth last year. Other fast-growing categories are building materials (+21 percent), groceries (+19 percent) and home decor and furniture (+18 percent).

These numbers state that the B2C e-commerce turnover will be increasing with a 12 percent year-on-year growth rate this year. This means that e-commerce in Belgium will be worth 11.84 billion euros at the end of the year.

It means the e-commerce turnover is increasing even though the average spending per buyer will decrease slightly. Last year, a little more than 50% perecnt of the Belgian population shopped online and spent on average €1700 in 2017. This year, this will decrease to €1686

The majority of online spending in Belgium goes through laptops (54 percent), followed by PCs (30 percent), tablets (9 percent) and smartphones (6 percent). Belgian consumers shop online, they mostly order clothing and footwear (42 percent). This category is followed by home electronics (31 percent), books (21 percent) and cosmetic and skincare (18 percent).

Cross-border
Belgium has always been shopping cross-border, and especially Dutch shops are popular. 34 percent of the Belgian population has shopped online from the Netherlands, which is a significant difference with the percentage of buyers in China (14 percent), the United Kingdom and Germany (13 percent).

This is predicted by the Global Ecommerce Association. Only e-commerce in Asia will be growing harder. With Europe having the highest internet penetration (80,5%), this growth is more striking. The research, executed by the E-commerce Foundation, says that although the e-commerce sales growth rate is forecasted to decline, e-commerce is still growing in all regions. Growth rates last year vary from 1.45 to 39 percent.

Logistic performance highest in Germany
One of the things found is that the logistical performance differs significantly per country. The score reflects perceptions of a country's logistics based on, among other things, the efficiency of customs clearance process, quality of trade- and transport-related infrastructure and ease quality of logistics services. It is the highest in Germany (4.23), followed by the United Kingdom (4.07) and the United States (3.99). Russia scores the lowest, with 2.57 points.

E-commerce in Europe: 400 billion euros in 2017
The entire B2C e-commerce turnover of the selected countries is expected to increase to about 1.56 trillion euros in 2017. The Asia Pacific region has the highest share of this e-commerce turnover. Europe has a bit more than a 25 percent share, with an e-commerce turnover of about 400 billion euros.

Europeans like to pay with credit card
Based on the information from the research in the selected European countries, the bank credit card is the most used payment method (54%) in Europe. It’s followed by debit card (45%), PayPal (39%), cash on delivery (20%), bank transfer (11%) and gift cards (7%). Turkey leads in monthly online payments, with 44 percent of the population making online payments monthly.
