The European e-commerce landscape has entered a new phase. With the launch of its Joybuy platform, JD.com lands in Europe with a clear ambition: to replicate its highly efficient, logistics-driven model and compete directly with Amazon on its strongest capabilities.

This is not a typical marketplace expansion. It is a strategic move that signals a structural shift in how global e-commerce players approach the European market.

JD.com lands in Europe with a multi-market launch.

JD.com enters Europe with a simultaneous rollout across major markets, including the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

The platform launches with:

More than 100,000 products across key categories such as electronics, home, beauty, and groceries

Partnerships with global brands like Apple, Samsung, Sony, and L’Oréal

Competitive delivery thresholds and a subscription model for unlimited shipping

This broad assortment shows that JD.com is not entering Europe as a niche player. Instead, JD.com lands in Europe with a full-scale generalist marketplace strategy, positioning itself as a direct alternative to Amazon from day one.

Logistics at the core of JD.com’s European strategy

What truly differentiates JD.com as it enters Europe is not pricing but logistics.

The company brings its well-known operational strengths into the European market:

Same-day delivery for early orders

Next-day delivery for later purchases

Coverage across major urban areas

Behind this promise is a robust infrastructure:

Dozens of warehouses and logistics hubs across Europe

Extensive delivery networks and pickup points

Strong control over last-mile delivery

As JD.com lands in Europe, it introduces a logistics-first model that prioritizes speed, reliability, and customer experience. This approach mirrors its success in China and directly challenges Amazon’s fulfillment leadership.

A different approach from other Chinese platforms

JD.com enters Europe with a fundamentally different strategy from other Chinese e-commerce players.

While platforms like Temu or AliExpress rely heavily on cross-border shipping and ultra-low prices, JD.com focuses on:

Local inventory stored within Europe

Regional distribution centers

Integrated supply chain management

This enables JD.com to compete in higher-value categories where fast delivery and product quality are critical. As a result, JD.com lands in Europe positioned closer to Amazon’s model than to discount-driven marketplaces.

Why JD.com is landing in Europe now

The timing of this expansion is not accidental. JD.com lands in Europe amid several structural shifts:

Slowing growth in the Chinese domestic market

Increasing competition among local e-commerce giants

The need to diversify revenue streams internationally

Europe is a highly attractive market due to its size, maturity, and strong consumer demand for fast, reliable delivery.

To accelerate its entry, JD.com has combined marketplace launch with strategic investments and partnerships, allowing it to quickly establish a competitive presence.

Direct competition with Amazon’s core strengths

As JD.com enters Europe, it is not targeting market gaps—it is competing head-on with Amazon’s core capabilities.

Both companies now align on key factors:

Advanced logistics networks

Fast delivery options

Broad product assortments

Strong brand relationships

The competitive battlefield is shifting toward fulfillment excellence, where speed and operational efficiency define success.

JD.com’s strategy suggests that superior logistics can be a decisive advantage, even in a market where price competition remains intense.

Impact on the European e-commerce landscape

The fact that JD.com lands in Europe at scale will have significant implications for the entire ecosystem.

Logistics becomes the key differentiator

Retailers and marketplaces will need to invest heavily in fulfillment capabilities to remain competitive.

Increased pressure on mid-tier platforms

Companies positioned between low-cost and premium offerings may struggle as JD.com captures a strong middle position.

Acceleration of infrastructure investment

Major players are likely to expand warehouse networks and last-mile delivery solutions to match rising expectations.

Rising customer expectations

Fast delivery, including same-day options, may become a standard rather than a premium feature.

JD.com lands in Europe as a catalyst for market transformation

JD.com lands in Europe not just as a new competitor, but as a force accelerating the evolution of e-commerce in the region.

The market is shifting from:

Price-driven competition

Cross-border marketplace models

Towards:

Logistics-driven differentiation

Integrated and localized supply chains

Service and speed as core value drivers

In this context, JD.com’s entry marks a turning point. As JD.com lands in Europe, it sets a new benchmark for operational excellence and raises the bar for every player in the market.

China’s e-commerce giant JD.com is accelerating its international expansion, with a clear focus on Europe. Known for its advanced logistics network and strong domestic presence, JD.com is now making strategic acquisitions and partnerships to strengthen its foothold in one of the world’s most competitive retail markets.

The company recently launched a €2.2 billion offer for German retailer Ceconomy, owner of well-established brands like MediaMarkt and Saturn. This move signals JD.com’s ambition to combine traditional retail infrastructure with its powerful e-commerce capabilities, directly challenging European players such as Amazon and Allegro.

Why Germany Matters for JD.com

Germany is Europe’s largest economy and one of the continent’s most attractive e-commerce markets. With its high consumer spending, well-developed logistics, and central geographic position, it provides JD.com with a strategic entry point into the broader EU market.

Acquiring Ceconomy would give JD.com access to:

A network of physical stores across Germany and other European countries.

Established customer bases familiar with electronics retail.

Supply chain and distribution channels that complement JD.com’s digital expertise.

This hybrid model, combining brick-and-mortar presence with online platforms, mirrors JD.com’s domestic success in China.

JD.com Competitive Landscape in European E-Commerce

JD.com’s European ambitions place it in direct competition with:

Amazon – still the dominant online marketplace in Europe.

Allegro – a fast-growing Polish platform expanding logistics partnerships across Central Europe.

Shein and Temu – Chinese rivals focusing heavily on fast fashion and low-cost imports.

Unlike Shein and Temu, JD.com emphasizes product authenticity, reliable logistics, and high service standards, aligning more closely with European consumer expectations around trust and product safety.

Regulatory Challenges Ahead

The European Union is tightening regulations around product safety, VAT, and cross-border imports. Recent proposals would hold online marketplaces liable for unsafe goods, meaning JD.com must ensure strict compliance to succeed.

However, JD.com’s existing focus on supply chain control and quality assurance gives it a potential advantage compared to other platforms that rely heavily on third-party sellers.

What This Means for JD.com and for European Retail

If the Ceconomy deal is successful, JD.com could reshape the European electronics retail sector by:

Offering faster delivery through integrated logistics.

Creating a seamless omnichannel experience for consumers.

Driving competitive pricing while maintaining product reliability.

For European consumers, this expansion could mean greater choice and better service, while for competitors, it signals rising pressure to innovate and adapt.

JD.com’s push into Europe highlights a new chapter in the continent’s e-commerce story. By targeting Germany through the Ceconomy acquisition, JD.com is positioning itself not just as an online marketplace, but as a hybrid retail powerhouse blending physical and digital commerce.

With regulatory challenges and fierce competition ahead, the coming years will determine whether JD.com can secure a lasting place in Europe’s retail landscape.

Ceconomy AG, the German retail group behind Europe’s leading electronics chains MediaMarkt and Saturn, has confirmed it is in advanced negotiations with JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce companies. The potential deal, still in the exploratory phase, could see the Asian tech giant make a purchase offer valued at approximately €2.2 billion.

In an official statement, Ceconomy revealed that JD.com is evaluating the possibility of submitting a formal bid, but clarified that no binding offer has been made and that a final decision is still pending. The news was first reported by the retail industry outlet RetailDetail.

Proposed Deal Valued at €2.2 Billion

Sources close to the matter indicate that JD.com is considering an offer of €4.6 per share, bringing the total value of the acquisition to around €2.2 billion. If completed, the transaction would mark a major move in JD.com's international expansion strategy and grant the Chinese firm access to Ceconomy's vast European retail footprint.

Ceconomy operates over 1,000 physical stores across Europe under the MediaMarkt, Saturn, and Deutsche Technikberatung brands, giving JD.com a solid omnichannel platform for reaching European consumers.

Strategic Rationale: JD.com Seeks European Omnichannel Presence

This acquisition would align with JD.com's broader internationalization strategy, especially at a time when e-commerce growth in China is slowing. By integrating Ceconomy’s extensive retail network, JD.com could distribute Chinese-manufactured tech products in Europe, capitalizing on MediaMarkt and Saturn’s competitive pricing and well-established customer base.

According to D/A Retail, talks between JD.com and Ceconomy resumed in 2025, after initial discussions were held in 2023. While Ceconomy declined to confirm the earlier approach, industry insiders suggest that negotiations have been ongoing for some time.

Key Shareholders Hold the Balance of Power

A potential takeover would require the support of Ceconomy's largest shareholders. Three influential family groups — Haniel (16.7%), Beisheim, and Schmidt-Ruthenbeck — collectively hold around one-third of the company’s shares. The Haniel group, in particular, is considered instrumental in determining the company’s strategic direction.

Additionally, the heirs of MediaMarkt founder Erich Kellerhals control roughly 30% of Ceconomy’s shares, forming another critical bloc. For any acquisition to proceed, JD.com would need to align the interests of these two powerful shareholder groups.

What This Means for the European Retail Landscape

If the deal goes through, JD.com would gain a formidable foothold in Europe’s consumer electronics market and potentially redefine the competitive dynamics in omnichannel retailing. The move could also serve as a blueprint for other Chinese tech giants looking to diversify beyond domestic borders.

With the European market ripe for transformation and omnichannel strategies becoming increasingly important, JD.com’s interest in Ceconomy underscores the growing strategic importance of retail infrastructure in the e-commerce era.

JD.com is pushing its EU expansion via the UK and is considering buying British electronics retailer Currys. At the same time, that company has reportedly already rejected an offer from a U.S. investment fund.

The Daily Telegraph stated in an article that it had received information that JD.com, the Chinese e-commerce titan, and Currys had held some informal talks to reach an acquisition agreement. T

The conversation comes at a key moment, as the Chinese company is looking for new lines of growth outside its country due to the strong competition in Asia and "would help protect it against a slowdown in sales in China," according to Emily Salter, senior analyst at GlobalData.

Also, multiple media reported in November 2023 that JD.com was interested in acquiring a stake in Ceconomy Group, the parent company of MediaMarkt and Saturn.

JD.com's main rivals in its home country, PDD and Alibaba, have an overseas presence with international platforms. Meanwhile, JD.com overseas has mainly focused on building a logistics network, which goes by the name of Ochama and is present in some European countries.

Salter also explained that "the acquisition of Currys would not pay off immediately, but could allow it to strengthen its online operations further, helping it to better compete with Amazon."

JD.com confirms it

Following speculation and media reports, JD.com has decided to issue a statement to the London Stock Exchange indicating that they are considering the possibility of acquiring the British retailer, but have not yet made a final decision on whether they will submit a bid for Currys. The Chinese company has until March 18 to determine whether it will make a formal offer for the British company.

Although Currys' share of the UK electrical products market has declined over the past 10 years, from 22.3% in 2014 to an estimated 19.1% in 2023, it remains the market leader in this sector. This makes it an attractive acquisition option, Salter concludes. In addition, due to speculation about JD.com's potential bid and Eliott Advisors' rejection of the purchase, the British company's shares have seen a 35% increase recently.

Currys has a market capitalization of $962 million (€865 million) and has 21 retail stores in the UK and Ireland, in addition to 800 leased stores in various international locations.

Ochama, a retail concept brand that is part of the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, has announced the expansion of its home delivery services to another 19 European countries. This brings the total of Ochama European regions to 24 countries on the continent.

The decision to expand Ochama into Europe came as a consequence of the Covid crisis and its deep impact in Asia.

In 2023, JD.coml ended its Ochama services in Thailand and in Indonesia due to post-COVID-related issues. The company did not explain in detail the reasons behind the closures.

But it was clear that JD decided to bet on Europe, as Ochama, its new retail model, officially launched in January 2022 in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Luxembourg.

The Ochama model includes assortments of food, hygiene, cleaning, fashion, and consumer electronics, among other categories, and combines online shopping with in-store pickup, fully automated and robotized to allow customers to pick up their items on the spot. In addition, it also offers the option of home delivery.

JD is betting everything on its European expansion

Currently, things are not looking great for JD. Shares of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com fell 13% to an all-time low on Friday after several banks and brokerages cut the company's price targets and revenue growth forecasts, hinting at a weaker-than-expected recovery in consumer spending.

A debt crisis in the critical real estate sector has contributed to slowing China's post-pandemic economic growth, and many Chinese have cut back on spending due to concerns about the economy and job security, hurting the retail sector.

In March, JD.com already warned that it would take time to regain consumer confidence after the pandemic, missing its revenue forecast for the fourth quarter.

Citi Research lowered its revenue forecasts for JD.com by 3.4% and 4.3% for the third and fourth quarters and now forecasts growth of 0.8% and 1.3%, respectively.

The bank's analysts cite a "relatively muted consumer trend, a high base, intense competition, and the ongoing impact of the restructuring adjustment" to justify the change in forecasts.

As of July 18th, Chinese companies are no longer able to sell items through Amazon.cn. Chinese consumers can still purchase imported goods via Amazon.

The online giant does not give a reason for the departure, but international media suggests that Amazon was struggling with fierce competition from Alibaba's Tmall and JD.com. It means that the Chinese market will be worth twice as large as that of the United States. At the same time, it is predicted to be ten times more valuable than the Japanese market, which is predicted to be worth $713bn (USA) and $159bn (Japan) in 2022 respectively. Mobile e-commerce (m-commerce) will continue to be crucial in the Chinese market. About 76% of all online shopping will happen on mobile devices. Mobile payments will remain the most popular payment method.

Forrester claims that Alibaba and JD.com will continue to dominate the local market, accounting for more than 85% of China's e-commerce market together, while new companies like Pinduoduo and Xiaohongshu will grow, as the social aspects of their offerings prove to be popular amongst shoppers. Further expansion is expected to happen beyond 2022, as currently only 38% of China's 1.2bn people have started shopping online so far.

Unilever states that it is trying to access the more distant areas in China easier this way. JD.com's distribution network would help achieve that goal, as it has storage capacity in China in about 500 distribution centers all over the country.

In this respect, JD.com has an advantage over their main competitor, Alibaba, as it has been investing in this network at an earlier stage of development. These days, JD.com is available to ship up to 90 percent of all products the same day, for delivery next day, even in more rural areas. Unliver is not the first European party that partners like this with the Chinese JD.com. Last year, French company Danone agreed to a similar partnership.

Both Google and JD.com say they want to cooperate to develop a retail infrastructure that improves the personal shopping experience and alienates friction in certain markets. What this specifically contains, is yet unclear.

The idea behind this investment is that JD.com will offer products to the consumer in the United States and Europe through Google Shopping. This means that offers on JD.com will be better accessible for consumers outside of Asia, as Google has a more prominent place in lots of these markets. As the United States and China are currently working on trade war, the timing of the investment is remarkable. Because of this trade war, the Chinese web giant has flattened their US-activities.

According to the Dutch news source NOS, the investment of Google does not mean that Google will start offering its services in China again. The American company is, since January 2010, no longer active in the Chinese mainland. Activities were relocated to Hongkong because of differences in opinion on online freedom and attacks by hackers. Since this argument, Google has been blocked in China.

The China Railway Express is faster than the sea and cheaper than air, JD.com promises. According to Internet Retailing, the first train full of goods produced in Europe has completed its journey from Germany to China last week.

The then thousand kilometers journey from Hamburg to Shaanxi, the capital of central China's province where JD operates one of a key distribution hub for cross-border imports, has been completed with goods including food and beverages, home furnishings and automotive supplies. A lot of these products are expected to sell on JD's Anniversary Sales on June 18th.

According to JD.com, the route by train is 35 days faster than using existing sea routes to deliver pan-European goods to China. It would also be 80% cheaper than air transport. The Chinese e-commerce platform says it can take care of all customs procedures as well, as they handle every aspect of the freight process from the train station in Germany to the customers' doorstep in China.
