WHAT OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES DOES THE SUMMER HOLD
FOR CROSS-BORDER E-COMMERCE?
ime is flying by fast, and we’re already halfway through 2022, which
means that the summer months are here! Summertime seems to be a
slower season for most retailers. Especially now, we see a lot happening
Tin e-commerce. Companies with big investment money, such as Klarna,
Gorillas and Getir, are cutting down their staff, and companies such as Amazon
and Zalando have shown negative results in Q1.
Customer confidence is lower than it has been in years. Besides that, usually,
consumers are preoccupied with travelling or enjoying their time in the sun or
doing things at a leisurely pace, but that doesn’t mean that consumers do not want
to buy new products. Every savvy e-commerce marketer recognises summer with all
its holidays as a sales opportunity.
During these months, where sales could decrease as people are spending more
time outdoors, it could be an opportunity to expand your business internationally.
Obviously, e-commerce is a great opportunity to dip your
toes into foreign markets before launching a new brick-and-
mortar store abroad. However, before diving headfirst into
COLOFON
your global expansion, it is important to understand that
every country is different and requires its own unique strategy.
That’s why in this issue, Rakuten will teach you about how
to sell in Japan using their marketplace, which 80% of the
Japanese population use. Japan is one of the most readily FOUNDER & PUBLISHER JEROEN LEENDERS

and challenges. It is by no means an easy market to delve
into, but it could potentially be a literal gold mine. Especially EDITORS RUUD DEN ROOIJEN, FRANK CALVIÑO,
for European brands. Additionally, DirectLink will help us

So to end positively, let’s focus on the upcoming new WEBSITE: WWW.CROSS-BORDER-MAGAZINE.COM
