ShipBob, a global logistics provider specializing in e-commerce omni-fulfillment solutions, has launched its services in the Netherlands.

ShipBob was currently providing services for supply chain solutions and fulfillment of global orders from the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia.

The company was founded in 2014, in Chicago and currently has 330.5 million dollars in funding. It operates globally with a logistics network of more than 45 fulfillment centers in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia.

With the Netherlands expansion, the company is opening its fifth location in Europe. The launch is a result of increased demand in the region. “As we have grown our United Kingdom and European business over the last 12 months, the next logical step was a Netherlands-based fulfillment location”, said Enda Breslin, GM of Europe at ShipBob.

ShipBob's alliance with Amazon fulfillment

One of the main competitive advantages of ShipBob is its alliance with Amazon to provide a fulfillment option for online sellers that streamlines the process by which inventory is entered into Amazon’s network for delivery.

The Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) Prep Automation service prepares and sends ShipBob merchants’ FBA inventory to Amazon for faster placement, allowing them to use ShipBob as their centralized inventory hub.

U.S. customers using the Automated FBA Prep service receive several benefits, ShipBob said, including automation of the process from order creation to fulfillment by syncing order and shipping label information between ShipBob and Amazon. Merchants can also prep orders directly from ShipBob’s dashboard and choose a ShipBob or Amazon prepaid shipping label.

A ShipBob application programming interface allows merchants to bypass Amazon workflows while ShipBob’s centralized inventory hub enables easy movement of items into Amazon’s or other retailers’ networks.

At Cross-Border Magazine, we like to have inspiring discussions about cross-border e-commerce. In this article, we are focusing on Deliveroo Singapore in partnership with eTail Asia. Deliveroo offers consumers food choices for every occasion.

We spoke with Minjoo Lee, Head of Marketing at Deliveroo Singapore, to discuss their cross-border and e-commerce journey.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and Deliveroo Singapore?

As Head of Marketing at Deliveroo Singapore, I oversee all activities related to Brand, Marketing, and Partnership and spearhead strategies and implementation. Over the past two years in the Deliveroo Singapore team, I have been honored to be part of the core management - giving me opportunities to build a high-performing team.

In fact, our latest consumer survey results found that consumers are now used to the convenience food delivery services bring, so much so that it is part of their daily lives. This has encouraged us to continue engaging and building loyalty among consumers. As a food delivery platform committed to offering consumers the food choices they seek for every occasion, we have been. We will be actively adding an even more comprehensive array of options. These include healthy options like SaladStop! and VIOS by Blu Kouzina. Also, not forgetting their craving for local food, we onboarded the likes of CRAVE in order to better meet their food preferences along with our local hawker stalls island-wide.

At the heart of it all, as a global F&B delivery platform, technology is still the baseline of our operations and offerings to cater to our stakeholders effectively and meaningfully - be it keeping our customers fed, creating accretive revenue streams for our restaurant and grocery partners, or providing riders with access to earning opportunities with flexible work which fits around their schedules.

Can you tell us about Deliveroo’s global expansion throughout the years?

Deliveroo was first started out of London in 2013 by our founder and CEO, Will Shu. He discovered a city full of great restaurants, but he was amazed that so few of them delivered food. As such, he made it his personal mission to bring the best local restaurants directly to people’s doors. Since then, we have grown rapidly and now operate in 10 markets worldwide, working with 179,000 restaurants and grocers, 150,000 riders, serving millions of consumers.

In 2015, we entered Singapore to further build on our goal of making food accessible to all, especially given the strong food culture here. Since then, we have expanded to our current 80 people-strong teams, working with over 10,000 restaurant and grocery partners and 8,000 delivery riders - all of whom played very pivotal roles when we entered the pandemic.

Minjoo Lee, Head of Marketing at Deliveroo Singapore

Moving into the post-pandemic phase, restaurants still recognize the importance of food delivery and that it is complementary to their dine-in services, bringing in additional revenue. To best support restaurants in fully embracing the increasing demand for deliveries, we work closely with our restaurant partners to provide insights and help identify opportunities in order to best engage their delivery customer base.

Beyond restaurants, we also launched our grocery delivery offering in Singapore in 2021, after noticing consumers’ growing reliance on delivery, especially how it increased exponentially during the pandemic.

Just last October, we further grew our global footprint by entering the Qatar market to connect consumers with a range of local and international restaurant choices, coupled with quick and reliable deliveries. This is our third market in the Middle East after the UAE and Kuwait, where we have been seeing strong business performance and consumer demands.

As we continue offering a plethora of food delivery choices and convenience for our customers, we also remain committed to giving back to those in need in the communities we serve in.

In doing so, we recently rallied for greater donation support from our customers by expanding our partnership with local Singaporean charity, Food From The Heart (FFTH), to contribute an additional 43,000 meals to beneficiaries through this current campaign.

Aside from our campaigns with FFTH, we have also been actively organizing Ramadan initiatives that seek to create positive impacts over the past years. On this, we have recently collaborated with Darul Makmur Mosque in Singapore this past month to reach over 250 mosque-goers each week across four weeks by distributing meals for the breaking of the fast onsite at the mosque.

On top of our core business as a food delivery platform, we are regularly looking for new ways to be a force for good and give back to the communities in which we work, and we are grateful for the opportunities that have allowed us to do so thus far.

And what about Deliveroo’s e-commerce journey?

Deliveroo has observed a growing appetite among Singaporeans for food and grocery delivery services. On the e-commerce front, food delivery has definitely become an indispensable part of Singaporeans’ daily lives, and this trend has not dissipated post-pandemic, with us seeing more customers and restaurant and grocery partners on the platform.

Post-pandemic, Singaporeans’ lives, and food delivery services have become even more intertwined. As highlighted in our latest consumer survey results, 60% of Singaporeans say they use food delivery services now more regularly compared to pre-pandemic times. A large majority (70%) anticipate they will use food delivery services at least once a week.

Currently, grocery delivery services are also on the rise as more consumers turn to digital/online means of commerce. Almost 60% prefer getting groceries delivered over going to the supermarket. In a 2020 survey commissioned by Deliveroo, only over a fifth said they were most likely to order from grocery stores when using food delivery services.

With the pandemic shifting consumer preferences and wanting to adopt healthier lifestyles, we’ve also pivoted our offerings to better cater to these demands. As part of our ever-evolving journey, Deliveroo has remained committed to meeting consumer demand for more healthy food options through convenient access to a wide range of restaurants and grocery offerings on our platform. In the last two years, Deliveroo has seen a significant increase in orders for our ‘Healthy’ and ‘Healthy Options’ categories.

Food and grocery delivery services are definitely here to stay in Singapore. For many F&B businesses, food delivery is even an indispensable part of their business. As demand for food and grocery platforms continues to grow, Deliveroo is committed to serving the diverse taste buds of all our customers.

What are some offline and online strategies adopted by Deliveroo Singapore?

As dine-in resumes its pre-pandemic levels, it’s important that we adapt yet still retain the core value proposition of Deliveroo, be it to consumers or restaurant partners. As found in our report, while food delivery remains a key part of our everyday lives, we have empowered consumers to have the option of ordering online and heading to our partners’ restaurants/stores for self-collection via the Pickup option. This encourages footfall from our app into the stores/restaurants of the operators (in line with the return of dine-ins), enabling another direct touchpoint between operators and consumers.

Online

We are constantly ensuring we stay relevant and connected with consumers by being the platform that delivers happiness through food. Whether they are ordering their favorite food or trying something new, Deliveroo strives to be the delivery service they turn to help spark that moment of joy when consumers get their food delivered to their doorsteps. Concurrently, we continuously support our partners and merchants to unlock incremental revenue generation through our understanding of consumer preferences and demands. This not only helps customers discover new and amazing food options but ensures that our restaurant partners get connected to these consumers.

Offline

While being largely driven by online engagement due to us being an online delivery platform, we turn to offline activations mainly for key milestones. One such example was our 7th birthday celebration pop-up event in Singapore last November, which saw us bringing treats for fellow November birthday babies in the CBD. Attendees got to partake in lucky draws to win gifts, merchandise, and Deliveroo vouchers up to S$1000. Furthermore, the first 20 November birthday celebrants who showed up got to redeem additional $50 Deliveroo vouchers. We further complemented this milestone with various online deals and promotions for our customers.

What are some of the challenges Deliveroo faced with global expansion and online selling?

While we continue to stay true to our mission to be the definitive online delivery platform of choice and provide consumers with access to the food they love, there is also the challenge of balancing great deals for customers in a highly competitive industry while also ensuring that we don’t end up just forging a transactional/deal-driven relationship with them. As such, our engagement strategies are constantly refreshed to ensure that we remain the platform that brings joy to the daily lives of our customers through them receiving the food they love rather than them turning to us purely for deals.

And what has Deliveroo learned from these challenges?

The amazing thing about Deliveroo is the ability to impact so many people’s lives, whether it’s keeping our customers fed, creating accretive revenue streams for our restaurant and grocery partners, or providing riders with access to earning opportunities and flexible work which fits around their schedules. Despite concerns about inflation and the challenging economic landscape, we see that customers are still turning to us as we bring value not just through deals but the range of food offerings, reliability of delivery, and much more.

Interestingly, through our service standards and our emphasis on giving back to the community, we observed more consumers leveraging their food orders as opportunities to show their kindness - be it for rider tips or rounding up their orders to donate to our beneficiaries from Food From The Heart. These notions further spur our team to do even better, as it showcases the importance of coming together in such challenging and constantly changing times. We strive to continue delivering on these promises across all three sides of our marketplace and stay committed to continuously tackling any challenge that might come our way.

What would be a piece of advice you would give other people in the same industry?

Focus on building close relationships with consumers - only then will you be able to truly find out what they are seeking for (whether it’s value, food options, preferences, etc.) and hence be readily able to embrace changes accordingly to cater to the ever-evolving consumer and market trends.

And why must people not miss the eTail event?

As the marquee retail business conference, eTail Asia brings with it insights from a plethora of industry experts, including Deliveroo. With the retail and commerce industry constantly needing to adapt according to consumers' ever-evolving preferences, businesses need to stay abreast, and there is no better way to do so than to be exposed to fellow industry partners, be it exchanging ideas or key learnings.

"We are always evaluating space plans to ensure they fit our business needs and to create a great employee experience," said John Schoettler, Amazon's head of the real estate division.

As explained in a news release by EFE, an Amazon source claims that the first phase of the project, known as Met Park, will open as planned next June and will house more than 8,000 workers that Amazon already has in Virginia and who will move to these new facilities. The same source has assured that "this decision does not imply any job cuts."

In total, Met Park can accommodate about 14,000 employees, so for now; the company has decided to put on hold the start of construction of the second phase of the project, called PenPlace. The opening of a second Amazon headquarters was announced in 2018 and was initially going to be split between Arlington and the New York borough of Queens. Still, in 2019 the company canceled the Big Apple part amid local opposition.

Amazon seems to be struggling

In early January, the company announced the layoff of about 18,000 employees. Amazon started by laying off 10,000 employees in November, but eventually, the adjustment will be larger than expected.

The layoffs have mostly affected the store divisions (Amazon Stores) and PXT, which is the human resources area of the company. The cuts amount to 6% of the roughly 300,000-strong workforce and represent a quick turnaround for an entity that recently doubled its base salary cap.

Amazon also closed 2022 in the red. The U.S. company has been weathering losses and closing at a profit since about 2015, thanks to its cloud business. However, last fiscal year, it posted a loss of $2.722 billion.

Expanding Same-day deliveries, but with added costs

The company is also expanding its ultrafast delivery options, a sign that it remains committed to pushing its logistics system for speed as it scales back plans in other areas.

The expansions are happening at a crucial point for Amazon, which faces competition for fast-delivery options while Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy puts a renewed focus on profits.

A central part of Amazon’s ultrafast delivery strategy is its network of warehouses that the company calls same-day sites.

The facilities are a fraction of the size of Amazon’s large fulfillment warehouses and are designed to prepare products for immediate delivery.

In contrast, the larger Amazon warehouses typically rely on delivery stations closer to customers for the final shipping stage.

Amazon has opened about 45 of the smaller sites since 2019 and could expand to at least 150 centers in the next several years, according to MWPVL International Inc., which tracks Amazon warehouse operations.

The sites have primarily opened near large cities and deliver the most popular 100,000 items in Amazon’s catalog, MWPVL said. New locations recently opened in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, according to Amazon, which declined to provide information on how many of the same-day sites it has.

These new ultrafast deliveries can arrive in hours, although Amazon charges members of its Prime subscription service a fee of $2.99 per order if customers don’t meet a $25 threshold.

Metapack, one of the UK's leading delivery tracking platforms, announced a partnership with the last mile startup Zedify in the United Kingdom. Zenify is known for its bicycle courier network. Zedify is well known for offering same-day and next-day delivery.

Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

With this partnership, Metapack will provide management and tracking software for Zedify and Metapack customers can now use Zedify for deliveries in the United Kingdom (UK).

The partnership follows an integration with Homerr in May, a network of 2.000 local delivery points in the Netherlands and Belgium. And only last month, Metapack partnered with HIVED for electrical delivery in the UK.

Metapack aims for more sustainable delivery options

One of the main reasons behind this set of new alliances between Metapack and several last-mile delivery companies is to create a sustainable logistic network in the UK.

“With 70% of consumers noticing the carrier delivering their order, brands can be confident that choosing cargo bike deliveries will give them a competitive edge on sustainability”, Zedify’s CCO Jon Williams said.

Zedify has been a pioneer in implementing cargo bike deliveries across the UK.

E-bike could end up delivering 20% of all parcels

Sustainable delivery has grown more important to customers shopping online, especially in recent years. According to a survey by Metapack among 3,000 Europeans, 75 percent of shoppers consider a more sustainable delivery. For over 30 percent of consumers, sustainability is the deciding factor when choosing a delivery option.

E-cargo bikes, a popular sustainable option for inner cities, are expected to be used for 20 percent of deliveries, Deloitte found. Earlier this summer, Amazon announced its own bike fleet hub in London. DPD has also been investing in e-bikes in the past few years.

By our partners at Direct Link - Approximately 83% of all cross-border e-commerce items weigh less than 2 kilos, according to a report by Statista. This is further confirmed by an Accenture report that places a similar percentage - around 84% - for packages below the 2-kilo mark.

During the survey, around 29 percent of respondents stated their cross-border deliveries weighed somewhere between 0.2 kg to 0.5 kg.

A big solution for small packages

That is why having a tailormade logistic solution, aimed at easing and speeding your small packages, is vital for any brand or company wishing to be successful while running a cross-border operation.

And if you found new interesting markets to target, then Merchandise Mail Plus from Direct Link will make your international deliveries easy. You get the reach and efficiency of the postal system as your item is delivered to your customer´s mailbox – safe and convenient.

The communication with the customers is managed smoothly. Your customers receive pre-advice emails, which keeps them informed and reduces calls to your customer service department. The pre-advice email can also be used for marketing purposes; in addition to delivery status information, you can include personalized offers, promotions, and other messages.

Choose service level

Country Tracked; this is a cost-effective service level for low-value items to customers worldwide. Your customer will receive two email notifications from Direct Link; one when the item has been received for further processing, and the second when the item has arrived at the country of destination. The item is conveniently delivered to the recipient´s mailbox. Items too large for the mailbox are notified for pick up at a local post office or service point.

Fully Tracked; with our fully tracked service level, you get even more features. Besides the features provided in the Country Tracked level you here have full end-to-end tracking to most key destinations worldwide and, if required, a delivery confirmation. This service level is the most secure way to send your item.

Added value with advertising; when buying Direct Link´s Merchandise Mail Plus service we offer added value by making it possible to place personalized ads embedded in your email tracking alerts. You have the flexibility to vary your campaigns towards different target markets including using local language and graphics.

Amazon UK, in a bet to reduce carbon emissions in its deliveries, is launching its first micro-mobility hub in the English city of London, through a fleet of electric cargo bikes and delivery staff on foot. It is estimated that the center will carry out around 5 million deliveries per year with this mobility.

Do you want to know more about international commerce and e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Amazon is committed to sustainability

This is not the first time Amazon UK has invested in sustainability. The firm announced earlier this year that it would start working with electric trucks for its deliveries. In addition, months ago, it explained that it would stop packaging products using single-use plastic bags.

In the case of plastic bags, the announcement was made in April, when it was said that these would be replaced by cardboard envelopes and recyclable paper bags. These changes were implemented in the company's supply network, and it was announced that more and more products would be shipped using their original packaging and with only an address label.

Emissions-free UK

The launch of this micro-mobility center comes at a time when Amazon is looking to reduce its carbon emissions in the territory. It has launched the first such hub in Hackney, east London.

With this new quest, electric bikes will start operating in the postcode districts of the city's low-carbon zone, reaching more customers in a sustainable way and with no negative impact on the environment.

But this will not be the only such center. According to Amazon representatives, the company is looking to open more e-freight delivery centers across the UK.

Net zero carbon

The UK Country Manager of Amazon, John Boumphrey, explained that Amazon is moving towards a net zero carbon future globally. And, at this point, looking at alternative forms of transport networks is one way of achieving this goal. So, through new electric bikes and a fleet of electric vehicles that continues to grow, it hopes to deliver more than ever before while guaranteeing zero carbon emissions.

Amazon has also recently announced that it will install more than 30,000 solar panels on its various buildings across the UK, which will be completed towards the end of the year. In addition, the e-commerce giant is launching a total of 18 solar projects in strategic locations across the region, a number it expects to double in two years. The company continues to focus on sustainability.

ID Logistics - the European logistic e-commerce platform - has arrived in Italy, with the installation of a logistics platform in Casei Gerola, between the Italian cities of Genoa and Milan, to support the development of one of its clients and to complete the network covering continental Europe.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Gian Luca Fossati, who has 15 years of experience in contract logistics and the supply chain with responsibilities at major international suppliers, will take on the position of Vice President Commercial and R&D for Italy. According to what he has explained, he assumes this challenge under the certainty that the business model that has led the company to double-digit growth every year and to expand in 4 continents can become a success also in Italy.

In this respect, the main success factors of ID Logistics' activities are its extensive experience in the e-commerce sector, as well as the commitment of its teams. This team has successfully carried out all phases of the project simultaneously, from the research and identification of the best location in Italy to the design of the most suitable solution for the case.

The arrival of ID Logistics in Italy

As a global network with extensive local expertise, ID Logistics' entry into the Italian market is linked to the company's strategy to become a global partner that can serve key customers throughout the European market. To this end, the company expects to develop quickly in the country.

In this regard, the Casei Gerola site, located near the A7 Milan/Genoa motorway and the A21 Turin/Brescia motorway, has been operational since 1 June 2022. It handles non-classifiable products on behalf of an international e-commerce operator. Also, it incorporates technologies that manage to integrate the entirety of the company's processes for this ID Logistics customer for which the Group operates in a total of 6 different countries.

Due to its strategic location, this new site is directly connected to the main cities in northwest Italy. It has a total surface area of 62,900 square meters and is capable of receiving up to 55,000 units per day, with more than 80 different destinations. In addition, the center currently employs 350 full-time staff, which is expected to increase to 500 during the peak season.

Another aspect that is important to mention is that the warehouse is LEED Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified, which is considered to be one of the most difficult certifications to obtain in terms of reducing the negative impact on the environment. This has been achieved thanks to the installation of solar panels and green walls that contribute to biodiversity, limiting the heating of the facility, while offsetting CO2 emissions. It is a facility that also stands out for reducing waste production through processes that are carried out in a specific sorting area. At the same time, the site has LED lighting and a complex water recycling system to conserve resources.

According to ID Logistics, this new site demonstrates the Group's ability to support its customers throughout Europe, giving it a solid foundation for continued growth in a market with great potential.

Thanks to the collaboration of Azimut Direct's network of financial advisors, Sailpost, one of Italy's biggest postal and logistics solutions providers, will receive a €5 million loan to expand and grow.

In 2021, Sailpost achieved excellent results, closing a turnover of more than €40 million, as well as an EBITDA of €4.5 million.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Sailpost's work in Italy

Today, Sailpost is the second largest postal operator in Italy, with a network of over 140 agencies and more than 230 post offices spread throughout the country. It is also currently active in the logistics and e-commerce sectors.

Thanks to the diversification that Sailpost has achieved over the years, it now has a postal and courier services distribution network that provides nationwide coverage, satisfying the needs of users, professionals, and businesses in general.

Sailpost's planned growth with Azimut Direct

According to the Group's spokespersons, Azimut Direct represents a new way of providing capital to Italian companies, through what is known as a "short chain" approach. Today, the Group is based on a mixed model with a strong technological focus on the analytical side, without neglecting the importance of the relationship with the companies.

This allows for ongoing dialogue with companies and close coordination with the Group's network of financial advisors to achieve better results.

The loan obtained by Sailpost has a seven-year term and seeks to support both the investment plan and the liquidity component. According to the company, the resources obtained will be used to optimize the production chain, particularly by purchasing two sorting machines. But, in addition, the company will seek to improve purchasing conditions in the common operations.

According to its representatives, the goal now is to increase turnover by more than 50%, mainly thanks to assets such as the market for court documents, penalty notices, and new projects.

MBE Worldwide has recently succeeded in acquiring a majority stake in the GEL Proximity platform, the last-mile service provider born in Italy and specialized in e-commerce.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Why GEL Proximity?

GEL Proximity is a platform dedicated exclusively to last-mile services. To this end, it operates with a technological connector that allows it to offer consumers an impressive diversity of pick-up points throughout Italy.

As a spin-off from Politecnico di Milano, in 2020 GEL Proximity became a fully owned company. The main objective is to significantly improve the sustainability and growth of e-commerce in the country.

With an approach based on urban logistics and oriented towards the reduction of pollutant emissions and environmental impact in general, GEL Proximity is committed to the optimization of the parcel delivery and collection system.

A strategic acquisition

The acquisition of a majority stake in GEL Proximity by MBE Worldwide represents a strategic step in its growth. This is because the development of the GEL Proximity platform will enable MBE Worldwide to strengthen its current competitive position as both a commercial and logistics platform for businesses.

In this sense, they have considered that the combination of one of the world's leading e-commerce platforms and an extensive network of service centers is what will make MBE Worldwide a unique alternative on the international scene. This will allow them to improve the services offered to their customers and, in turn, to better satisfy their own customers.

According to MBE Worldwide, its goal will be to facilitate access to GEL Proximity's logistics services. This, through innovative and adaptable technology, with the understanding that today, the last mile represents the most sensitive phase of the entire distribution chain.
