The Nordic e-commerce market is entering 2026 with renewed momentum. After several years shaped by inflation, high interest rates, and cautious consumer spending, households across Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway are gradually regaining confidence. At the same time, Nordic consumers remain highly price-conscious, digitally mature, and increasingly demanding when it comes to convenience, delivery flexibility, and transparent checkout experiences.

PostNord’s E-commerce in the Nordics 2026 Spring report, produced in collaboration with HUI Research, shows that online retail continues to be a major driver of retail growth across the region. Based on surveys with 4,000 consumers aged 18–79 across the four Nordic markets, the report highlights a market that is both unified by common digital habits and divided by important local differences.

Nordic e-commerce continues to grow in 2026

The headline finding is clear: Nordic consumers are highly active online shoppers. Across the region, 86 percent of consumers shopped online during the last 30 days, up from 84 percent the previous year. More than eight out of ten Nordic consumers now shop online monthly, confirming that e-commerce has become a normal part of everyday purchasing behavior rather than a separate retail channel.

This growth is occurring in a market where consumers remain cautious with their money. Inflation may have stabilized, but the report shows that the habits formed during the cost-of-living squeeze have not disappeared. Nordic consumers continue to compare prices, look for promotions, and evaluate the full cost of purchase before completing an order.

For online retailers, this means growth opportunities remain strong, but competition is intensifying. Consumers expect competitive prices, convenient delivery, easy returns, and a smooth payment journey.

Cross-border e-commerce is now part of normal shopping behavior

One of the most important findings is the strength of cross-border shopping. According to the report, 71 percent of Nordic consumers have made an online purchase from abroad during the past year. More than 40 percent shop online from abroad at least monthly, showing that international e-commerce is no longer occasional or exceptional.

China remains the most common country of origin for Nordic consumers’ latest international purchase, accounting for 27 percent of cross-border purchases. Germany and other European markets also play an important role, while the United States occupies a smaller, more brand-driven position.

The most common product categories for international purchases are clothes and footwear, followed by home electronics and beauty and health products. This reflects the role of global marketplaces in offering wide assortments, low prices, and trend-driven products.

Sweden is the Nordic cross-border powerhouse

Within the Nordic region, Sweden stands out as the most popular country for cross-border shopping. The report shows that Sweden is an important e-commerce destination for consumers in neighboring Nordic countries, especially Finland and Norway.

This reflects Sweden’s more mature domestic e-commerce market. Swedish retailers are better positioned to attract consumers from nearby markets because of broader assortments, stronger digital infrastructure, and relatively high consumer trust.

Temu, Shein, and global marketplaces are reshaping competition

The rapid growth of international marketplaces is one of the most disruptive trends in Nordic e-commerce. Platforms such as Temu and Shein are gaining share by combining low prices, large product ranges, and app-based shopping experiences.

This poses a challenge for Nordic retailers, which typically operate under stricter rules governing consumer protection, product standards, and sustainability. Competing only on price will be difficult. Instead, local retailers need to emphasize trust, delivery reliability, product quality, easier returns, and stronger customer relationships.

The report also warns that upcoming regulatory changes could alter cross-border behavior. The planned removal of the €150 customs duty exemption for goods shipped from third countries to EU consumers may reduce impulse-driven cross-border purchases and shift some demand toward domestic or EU-based retailers.

Mobile payment has overtaken cards in the Nordics

Payment behavior is changing quickly. Since 2024, Swish, Vipps, and MobilePay have been the most preferred payment methods in the Nordics. In 2026, they have also become the most widely used payment methods, surpassing credit cards across the Nordic region.

This is a major signal for retailers. Nordic consumers increasingly expect fast, familiar, and low-friction payment options. A complicated checkout can directly hurt conversion.

The report shows that checkout cancellations are becoming more common, often because shipping costs are too high, delivery options do not suit the customer, or return conditions are unattractive. In other words, the checkout is no longer just the final step in the purchase journey. It has become a point of comparison by which consumers decide whether the overall offer is good enough.

Delivery convenience is a decisive factor

Delivery remains one of the most important competitive factors in Nordic e-commerce. At the Nordic level, service points are still the most common delivery method, used by 33 percent of consumers. However, preferences vary significantly by country.

In Sweden, home delivery is the most used and preferred option. In Denmark and Norway, service points remain highly important. In Finland, parcel lockers dominate, making Finland the strongest parcel locker market in the Nordics.

Across the region, flexibility is essential. Consumers want to choose the delivery method, pickup location, and delivery speed. However, while many say they are willing to wait longer for more sustainable delivery, fewer are willing to pay extra for it. This suggests that sustainability matters, but cost remains the stronger factor in decision-making.

Returns are stable, but flexibility matters more

Return behavior has remained relatively stable across the Nordics. At a regional level, 28 percent of consumers have returned a product during the last three months.

Younger consumers return more frequently, especially because they buy more fashion, a category traditionally associated with higher return rates. Older consumers tend to shop more deliberately and return fewer items.

The report also shows that return methods are evolving. Service points remain important, but parcel lockers are becoming more popular as a return option, particularly in Sweden and Finland. Retailers that make returns easy, visible, and predictable can reduce purchase hesitation, especially among consumers who see a clear return policy as a form of insurance.

Circular e-commerce is firmly established

Second-hand shopping has become a mainstream part of Nordic e-commerce. One in three Nordic consumers bought second-hand goods online during the past month, and a slightly higher share sold second-hand goods during the same period.

Clothes and footwear dominate circular e-commerce across the region. The main reason consumers buy second-hand is price, although sustainability still plays an important role, especially in Finland.

This finding is important because it shows that circular commerce is not only an environmental trend. It is also a response to economic pressure. Consumers are using second-hand platforms to access lower prices, find unique products, and maintain consumption while managing household budgets.

Younger consumers are driving international and circular shopping

Generational differences are one of the strongest themes in the report. Consumers aged 18–29 shop internationally more often than older age groups. They are more exposed to global trends through TikTok, Instagram, and other social platforms, which influence what they discover and buy.

Younger shoppers are also more likely to buy and sell second-hand goods, cancel purchases during checkout, and expect fast, flexible delivery. They are highly digital, but also demanding and quick to switch retailers when the offer does not meet expectations.

Older consumers are more cautious. They shop internationally less often, tend to plan purchases more carefully, and are more likely to prefer familiar delivery and return methods. However, low prices can still influence their behavior, especially on platforms such as Temu.

Country-by-country findings

Sweden: Mature, digital, and selective

Sweden remains one of the most active e-commerce markets in the Nordics, with 88 percent of consumers shopping online during the last 30 days. However, weekly shopping has declined, while monthly shopping has increased, suggesting that consumers are becoming more deliberate in their purchases.

Swish has become the most popular payment method, while home delivery remains central to the Swedish online shopping experience. Sweden also has a strong second-hand market, with platforms such as Vinted gaining popularity, especially among younger consumers.

Denmark: Strong cross-border shopping and planned purchases

Denmark has seen online shopping grow for the third consecutive year, with 85 percent of consumers shopping online during the last 30 days. Danish consumers are highly active cross-border shoppers, with 80 percent buying from abroad during the past year.

Germany is especially important for Danish consumers, while Zalando, Temu, and Amazon remain leading international marketplaces. Service points remain the most common delivery method, but home delivery options are highly valued.

Finland: Parcel lockers and international shopping stand out

Finland continues to grow as an e-commerce market, with 84 percent of consumers shopping online during the last 30 days. Finnish consumers are frequent international shoppers, with 80 percent buying from abroad during the past year.

Parcel lockers are the dominant delivery method in Finland, more so than in any other Nordic country. Online bank payments remain the most preferred payment method, although debit cards are growing among younger consumers. Finland also shows strong circular commerce behavior, with both price and sustainability motivating second-hand purchases.

Norway: High activity and a shift toward Nordic cross-border shopping

Norway has one of the highest recent online shopping rates in the region, with 86 percent of consumers shopping online during the last 30 days. Cross-border shopping remains widespread, with 78 percent buying from abroad during the past year.

A notable shift is that Sweden has replaced China as the most popular country for Norwegian cross-border purchases. This may reflect a growing preference for closer, more reliable markets with faster delivery and easier returns.

Vipps has become both the most-used and most-preferred payment method in Norway, while service points remain the most common delivery method. Norwegian consumers are also highly active in second-hand selling.

What the findings mean for Nordic retailers

A mix of growth, caution, and rising expectations defines the 2026 Nordic e-commerce landscape. Consumers are buying online more often, but they are also more selective. They compare prices, evaluate delivery options, expect easy payment options, and abandon checkouts when the overall offer does not feel right.

For retailers, the main message is that convenience and trust are now as important as assortment and price. The strongest opportunities lie in creating a seamless customer journey: transparent pricing, flexible delivery, familiar payment methods, clear return policies, and credible sustainability options.

At the same time, cross-border competition will intensify. International marketplaces have already become part of everyday Nordic shopping behavior. Local retailers need to respond not by copying every low-price tactic, but by building stronger value propositions around reliability, speed, service, relevance, and customer trust.

Conclusion: The Nordics are positioned for e-commerce growth

PostNord’s Spring 2026 report shows a Nordic e-commerce market that is recovering, evolving, and becoming more competitive. Online shopping is deeply embedded in consumer behavior, mobile payments are gaining dominance, cross-border shopping is mainstream, and circular commerce is now a normal part of the retail ecosystem.

The region is positioned for growth, but that growth will not be evenly distributed. Retailers that understand the differences between Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway will be better placed to win. The same applies to those who recognize the differences between younger and older consumers, domestic and international shopping habits, and price-driven and convenience-driven behavior.

The future of Nordic e-commerce will belong to retailers that can combine competitive pricing with frictionless experiences, flexible logistics, trusted payment options, and a clear understanding of local consumer expectations.

By summer’s end, the Nordic region (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland) remains one of Europe's most digitally mature e-commerce markets. According to PostNord’s Spring 2025 report, over 80% of consumers shop online monthly, and a strong 73% made at least one international purchase in the past 12 months.

This high engagement level positions the Nordics as a strategic priority for global and regional brands aiming for long-term relevance across Europe.

Key Nordic E-Commerce Metrics (Summer 2025)

84% of Nordic consumers shop online at least once a month

73% have completed a cross-border purchase in the past year, with 48% shopping abroad monthly

32% bought second-hand items within the last 30 days

Sustainability factors influence 8 in 10 shoppers when selecting where to buy online

Cross-Border Popularity & Destinations

China is the leading cross-border origin for Nordic shoppers, especially in Sweden and Norway (around 30% of recent orders). Germany ranks highly in Denmark. Sweden is commonly purchased from in Finland—and vice versa.

Lower pricing is the primary motivator for cross-border purchases in the Nordics (around 60%), but trust, reliable delivery, and clear return policies determine conversion success.

Delivery & Payment Preferences Vary by Country

Key delivery preferences:

Denmark: 45% prefer pick-up at service points

Finland: 37% prefer parcel lockers

Sweden: 32% opt for home delivery

Norway: 31% favor mailbox delivery systems

Preferred payment methods also differ: Sweden favors invoice-based payments (e.g., Klarna), while Norway and Denmark lean toward buy-now-pay-later and local wallet solutions.

Nordic E-commerce Trends

Consistent Engagement

A high baseline of monthly shoppers creates opportunities for repeat purchase cycles, especially in fashion, beauty, and groceries.

Cross-Border Opens Demand

With nearly three-quarters shopping internationally, Nordic buyers are open to new brands and geographies—provided you address delivery, returns, and local trust signals.

Sustainability as a Decision Driver

Eight out of ten consumers weigh sustainability; brands offering clear ESG messaging and eco-delivery options can differentiate themselves.

Action Steps for E-Commerce Teams

Focus Area

Tactics

Delivery

Offer parcel lockers (Finland), home delivery (Sweden, Norway), and service points (Denmark)

Payments

Accept Klarna invoicing in Sweden; support BNPL and local wallets (Vipps, MobilePay)

Cross-border readiness

Show local currency, customs clarity, and offer trusted payment/provider branding

Sustainability

Promote eco-delivery, responsible packaging, and recommerce options

As of late August 2025, the Nordic e-commerce ecosystem remains vibrant and digitally engaged. With 83–84% of consumers shopping monthly and 73% making foreign purchases over the past year, the region is fertile ground for brands that adapt to local delivery, payment, and sustainability expectations. Differentiation in logistics, trust signals, and ESG positioning will continue to drive competitive advantage in Scandinavia’s evolving digital retail arena.

As digital retail continues its upward climb in the post-pandemic economy, the Nordic countries—Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway—have emerged as global frontrunners in e-commerce adoption. According to the newly released PostNord Spring 2025 Nordic E-commerce Report, over 80% of Nordic consumers shop online at least monthly, with increasing emphasis on convenience, sustainability, and international shopping.

Today, we want to dive into the key e-commerce trends reshaping the Nordics, thanks to our partners at PostNord, and digest this insightful E-commerce in the Nordics 2025 Spring report. Remember, you can download the full report here.

E-commerce Growth Rebounds in 2024

After a sluggish 2023, Nordic e-commerce made a notable recovery in 2024, outpacing overall retail growth across all four countries. While uncertainty in global trade and geopolitical tensions remain, the region’s e-commerce ecosystem is expanding, driven by tech-savvy consumers, mature delivery infrastructures, and a growing appetite for cross-border purchases.

Nordic Online Shopping in Numbers (2025)

84% shop online at least once a month

73% made an international online purchase in the past year

32% purchased second-hand items online in the last 30 days

62% paid for delivery during their last online purchase

Most common delivery: Service point (32%)

Most common payment: Credit card (24%)

Country-By-Country Breakdown

Sweden: The Most Mature Market

90% shop monthly (highest in the Nordics)

Most prefer home delivery and pay for convenience

Top categories: clothes, beauty, groceries

Swedes favor invoice payments (thanks to Klarna)

Strong second-hand growth driven by sustainability and style

Denmark: The Price-Savvy Consumer

Service points dominate deliveries, but home delivery is preferred

Danes are the most active cross-border shoppers (77%)

Popular international platforms: Zalando, Temu, Amazon

Slight dip in second-hand shopping, especially among 30–49 age group

Most value: lowest price + pickup flexibility

Finland: The Parcel Locker Nation

37% prefer parcel lockers—highest in the Nordics

Weekly online shopping among 18–29-year-olds jumped from 33% to 50%

Second-hand shopping and eco-conscious buying are gaining ground.

Online bank payment still leads, but cards and mobile pay rising.

Returns via parcel lockers are uniquely dominant.

Norway: Flexibility First

Highest willingness to pay for sustainable and fast deliveries

76% shop from abroad; top foreign sites include Temu and Amazon

Home deliveries and parcel lockers are on the rise.

71% value clear return policies—the highest in the Nordics

Second-hand fashion and electronics are popular.

Cross-Border Shopping: China, Germany & Sweden Lead

China remains the top foreign country from which Nordic consumers shop, especially among older age groups. Germany and Sweden follow closely, with Sweden being the most popular Nordic country for cross-border purchases, driven by a strong domestic e-commerce ecosystem and favorable logistics.

Sustainability: Strong Intent, Moderate Action

Despite economic pressures, 8 in 10 Nordic consumers consider sustainability when shopping online. However, willingness to pay extra for eco-friendly deliveries or products remains mixed. Swedes and Norwegians are more open to paying for sustainable delivery options, while Finns and Danes show more caution.

Key factors influencing sustainable purchases:

Sustainable materials

Fair working conditions

Eco-friendly delivery

Key Takeaways for E-tailers

Localize delivery and payment options to each Nordic market.

Offer clear and flexible return policies—critical in Norway.

Support parcel lockers in Finland and home deliveries in Sweden and Norway.

Invest in second-hand or resale platforms to tap into circular economy demand.

Balance sustainability with affordability to win over price-sensitive shoppers.

The 2025 Nordic e-commerce landscape reveals a digitally unified but behaviorally diverse market. To succeed, brands must embrace regional preferences—from payment systems and delivery expectations to sustainability values and second-hand shopping trends.

E-commerce in the Nordics isn’t just growing—it’s evolving. Retailers who adapt to these nuanced shifts will be best positioned to lead in this competitive, connected region.

This is the largest parcel agreement in PostNord Denmark’s history, involving a double-digit million volume of parcels from clients such as ASOS, About You, and the Bestseller Group.

PostNord Denmark has agreed the largest single parcel agreement in their history with UBsend. Worldwide, UBsend handles parcels for clients in the fashion industry, including ASOS, About You, and the Bestseller Group. From September 1, 2024, PostNord will handle a double-digit million volume of parcels for UBsend.

We are delighted and proud that an innovative company like UBsend sees as much value in partnering with PostNord as we do with them. This is the largest parcel agreement in PostNord Denmark’s history. The volumes are impressive, marking another step toward becoming the leading parcel provider in the Nordic region, says Kim Pedersen, CEO of PostNord Denmark.

The agreement covers parcels to Denmark as well as parcels and small deliveries to Sweden.

Strong Partnership and Climate Focus

PostNord has already started managing the double-digit million volume of parcels from UBsend. The two companies are working closely together to ensure fast delivery and high customer satisfaction. Furthermore, PostNord has set ambitious climate goals, aiming to become fossil-free by 2030 and reduce CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2025 compared to 2020.

At UBsend, we are incredibly pleased with the parcel agreement with PostNord, which holds a unique position in the parcel market across the Nordics. PostNord’s efficient solutions will further enhance customer satisfaction, and their ambitious climate goals were also a decisive factor in our decision, says UBsend CEO, Flemming Amar Raza.

PostNord supports UBsend’s customer offerings by making it easy for customers to choose delivery options tailored to local, regional, and national needs, including parcel lockers, pick-up points, or home delivery.

Understanding the Nordics

Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway each showcase unique online shopping behaviors yet share common themes, such as a focus on price sensitivity and growing interest in international marketplaces.

Economic and Geopolitical Influences

Lower interest rates have eased financial pressures, boosted purchasing power and resulted in a steady recovery across Nordic economies. However, geopolitical challenges like tariffs and supply chain disruptions persist, influencing costs and stock availability.

Key Consumer Trends

Cross-Border Shopping

Nordic consumers are increasingly shopping internationally, with 76% making cross-border purchases in the past year. China remains the top choice for low prices and diverse products, followed by Germany and Sweden. Popular categories include clothing, footwear, and electronics.

Sustainable and Circular E-commerce

Sustainability is gaining traction, with 29% of Nordic consumers purchasing second-hand items online in the past month. Younger consumers lead the shift toward sustainable practices, while a significant portion (14-20%) is willing to pay extra for eco-friendly deliveries.

Regional Insights

Sweden

Consumer Behavior: Swedish shoppers prefer service points for delivery, emphasizing convenience and flexibility.

International Shopping: 65% of Swedes shop abroad, favoring low-cost retailers like those in China.

Sustainability: 32% shop second-hand monthly, reflecting a growing interest in circular commerce.

Denmark

Delivery Preferences: Danes prioritize home delivery and service points, valuing flexibility.

Sustainable Practices: While only 15% actively consider sustainability, 20% have paid extra for eco-friendly options.

Cross-Border Trends: 80% shop abroad, with China and Germany among top destinations.

Finland

Delivery Innovations: Parcel lockers dominate, offering flexibility and accessibility.

Cross-Border Shopping: Finnish consumers heavily favor low-cost international marketplaces like Temu.

Sustainability: While 22% shop second-hand, the willingness to pay for sustainable delivery is lower.

Norway

Convenience Priority: Norwegians favor doorstep deliveries and are the most willing to pay for eco-conscious delivery options.

Sustainability Leadership: 34% shop second-hand, the highest among the Nordics, and 31% have paid for sustainable deliveries.

Emerging Opportunities

Parcel Locker Adoption

PostNord has expanded its parcel locker network to over 6,000 units across the Nordics, significantly improving last-mile logistics. Innovations like outdoor lockers and customer-focused features, such as customizable locker height, are enhancing user experience.

Global Expansion

Companies like Nordic Nest Group highlight the potential of Nordic brands globally. Their focus on Scandinavian design and tailored e-commerce strategies has driven expansion into over 70 countries, offering a roadmap for businesses aiming to enter new markets.

By Direct Link - Like the rest of the Nordic region, Denmark has a very well-developed e-commerce market and a population with a good grasp of digital technology.

According to DESI, the European Commission´s Economy and Society Index, Denmark is in second place, behind the UK, in terms of the percentage of the population who shops online. In 2021, 91 percent of the
Danish internet users made purchases online. Between 2012 and 2021, the value of online retail sales in Denmark went from 42 billion DKK to 133 billion DKK.

That strong development indicates that the Danish online consumers have both a high purchase frequency and average spending. According to the PostNord/Direct Link report e-commerce in Europe 2021, the typical Danish consumer spent EUR 243 a month online. The highest average spending among all twelve countries that was surveyed in the report.

When it comes to delivery options, Danish consumers have always been more positive about home deliveries than their Nordic neighbors. 55 percent of Danes have it as their most preferred option.

The Danes are also keen cross-border online buyers. Regarding a favorite destination, they
have changed their preferences a bit in recent years. According to the latest IPC* Cross-Border e-commerce Shopper Survey, 50 percent of Danish cross-border consumers had bought from Germany in the past year, 31 percent had bought from China, and 25 percent had bought from the UK. For a number of years before, China was the big dominant here.

Regarding the most commonly bought product categories online, Danish consumers´ preferences do not differ significantly from other European markets. Clothing and Footwear is number one with more than 50 percent having bought that over the past year. The number two category was Home Electronics, followed by Cosmetics and Skincare.

If You want an expert with market knowledge in the Nordic – Reach out to Direct Link!

They now have made online purchases worth 10 billion euros, of which more than 40 percent comes from the Swedish consumer (4.12 billion euros). It is followed by Denmark (2.49 billion euros), Norway (2.24 billion euros), and finally Finland (1.22 billion euros). This can be seen in the PostNord e-commerce report. The report also shows that six out of ten people, meaning 12 million consumers, in this region shop online on a monthly base.

The four markets have to deal with some cross-border shopping elements. Usually, cross-border consumers in the Nordic region shop abroad from China, the United Kingdom and Germany. Only on Norway, the consumers tend to prefer to buy cross-border from the American market. This may have something to do with the fact that eBay is very popular among Norwegian consumers. In Denmark, the United Kingdom is the favorite cross-border shopping destination, while the Swedes prefer Germany. When looking at a cross-border level in the Nordic region only, Sweden is for foreign consumers the most interesting market to shop cross-border. Especially the Finnish consumers are keen on shopping from Swedish shops

You face the challenge of cutting through the noise. To compete with commercial giants like Amazon, smaller online retailers are finding ways to meet customers wherever and whenever they want to shop- but flexibility is no longer enough. The convenience of online shopping was revolutionary a few years back, but since the market exploded in the Nordics to a €21.9bn industry, it has become a bottom line standard for any brand serious about competing in retail.

Now, e-tailers need to find innovative new ways to personalise their offerings so they can build a loyal customer base- and they’re going to need to harness customer data to do it. The buzz around big data has been ringing in our ears for a while - but it’s time to grasp the bull by the horns. Although investing in new technology too heavily has been the pitfall of many, the other critical error has been leaving it too late. Customers expect to be able to have a personalised experience from a cohesive brand across all channels. But how can retailers strike the right balance when it comes to upgrading their online commerce?

In Q2 of 2018, WBR Insights surveyed 100 Directors of E-commerce from across the Nordics to find out more about the challenges they’re facing and the innovative solutions being brought to the table. The results are presented in this benchmark report with analysis and commentary by the eTail Nordic community. Download the full report below.

The Swedish e-commerce market has increased only a little during last year, being worth 14.5 billion euros at the end of 2017. This means an increase of 4.1 percent, just 400.000 euro compared to 2016. This is what can be concluded in the Swedish e-commerce report by the E-commerce Foundation, focusing on 2017. While growth is only small, it still surpasses what was expected for 2017 by some research institutions. For 2018, the market is expected to grow to 16.2 billion euros, increasing 15.4 percent.

Growing markets
According to the report, about 81 percent of the total online population in Sweden are e-shoppers. This means these people have been buying online at least once in the last year. It is expected that this percentage will rise to 86 percent in 2018. On average, an online Swedish shopper spent 1,862.12 euros last year. The category that is most popular for online shopping, based on data from Statista, are (children's) items and toys, which showed a 23 percent growth last year. Other fast-growing categories are building materials (+21 percent), groceries (+19 percent) and home decor and furniture (+18 percent).
