Research by Multiscope and Trusted Shops concluded that only 19% of Dutch consumers are willing to pay for sustainable delivery options. While it may indicate that Dutch consumers are more focused on obtaining a cheap delivery, it is not necessarily the case that the Dutch do not care about sustainable delivery methods.

Of those who are willing to pay for a more sustainable delivery, 25% say they will pay up to €4.95 per order. If there would be no extra delivery charge, 71% of the Dutch consumers say they would choose an environmentally friendly shipping method. These results are surprising, as sustainability is a hot topic for a lot of companies and consumers.

Waiting for a delivery

While consumers are reluctant to pay extra for delivery, almost 90% of the respondents say that they are willing to wait longer if an order is delivered in a sustainable way. A total of 86% of the respondents say they would not mind waiting a little longer. 29% thinks that waiting one more day is no problem, while 25% is willing to wait 2 extra days. The other respondents even state they would be willing to wait longer than the two extra days if their order would be delivered in a sustainable way.

Country Manager Benelux at Trusted Shops, Tim Heinen, says it is understandable that consumers are not willing to pay extra for an environmentally friendly delivery. "Consumers think that webshops deal with these matters internally and do not charge extra for this kind of things. Sustainability will remain an important topic in the future of online retail. Therefore, Dutch consumers are likely to find it increasingly more important to know that their online orders are delivered in a sustainable way.”
