TheftAccording to research by iParcelBox, doorstep parcel thefts of e-commerce parcels in the United Kingdom are up 22% in a three year period. Using a freedom of information request the logistic company obtained data from 23 police forces (about 50%). Results reveal a rise from 786 thefts in the financial year 2016-2017, to 962 in the financial year 2018-2019.

The area with the highest levels of doorstep parcel thefts was Lancashire Constabulary (108 in the last 12 months). The lowest areas of parcel theft came from Nottinghamshire Constabulary with only 21 accounts of parcel theft over a 3-year period (1% of total figures).

A serious problem?

What might be most remarkable about this study is the year on year rise of reported incidents? While the research reveals that only around 0.003% of UK households have reported theft, and the problem does not seem to be huge, the increase of reported incidents is remarkable. With 22% growth over three years, the losses could quickly become meaningful and something to consider building into your cost base, depending upon who pays for the losses – the consumer, the retailer or the carrier.
