The European recommerce sector has reached a new milestone, with the French marketplace Back Market reporting strong growth in 2025. The company achieved more than €3.5 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) during the year, representing a 32 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Back Market operates as an online marketplace specializing in refurbished electronics, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other consumer devices. The platform connects certified refurbishers with consumers looking for high-quality second-life products at lower prices.

The company’s performance confirms that recommerce—online trade in refurbished or second-hand products—is moving from a niche segment into a mainstream part of the European e-commerce market.

Profitability and Scale

Beyond revenue growth, Back Market also reached an important financial milestone. The company has now achieved global EBITDA profitability, while maintaining strong margins in its most mature markets. In France, for example, the marketplace reported EBITDA margins of around 35 percent, reflecting the maturity of the refurbished electronics market in Europe.

The platform currently serves around 17 million customers across 17 markets, demonstrating that refurbished technology has become a widely accepted purchase option among consumers.

According to company leadership, the growth validates the long-term viability of the recommerce model. As CEO Thibaud Hug de Larauze explained, refurbished electronics are no longer a fringe or experimental category, but a scalable global business.

Drivers Behind the Growth

Several structural factors are contributing to the rapid expansion of recommerce platforms like Back Market.

Increasing Consumer Trust in Refurbished Devices

One key driver is the growing acceptance of refurbished products. Consumers are increasingly comfortable buying professionally restored electronics that come with warranties and quality checks.

This shift has been reinforced by the professionalization of refurbishment processes and stricter quality standards from marketplace operators.

Expansion Beyond Smartphones

While refurbished smartphones remain the core category, marketplaces are expanding into additional product types. Back Market has broadened its catalog to include laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, and audio equipment.

This diversification increases average order value and encourages repeat purchases, both of which contributed to the company’s growth in 2025.

Economic and Sustainability Factors

Two macro trends are accelerating the adoption of recommerce:

  • Rising device prices: Consumers increasingly seek lower-cost alternatives to expensive flagship devices.
  • Sustainability concerns: Refurbished electronics extend product lifecycles and reduce electronic waste, aligning with growing environmental awareness.

These factors are particularly relevant in Europe, where circular economy policies and sustainability regulations are shaping consumer behavior.

Europe as the Leading Recommerce Market

Europe has emerged as the most mature market for refurbished electronics. Replacement cycles for devices are generally longer, and consumers are more willing to purchase refurbished products than in many other regions.

Within Europe, Back Market has experienced especially strong growth in several markets. For example, Germany recorded year-on-year revenue and GMV growth of around 58 percent, highlighting the accelerating demand for sustainable technology options.

The company’s first market, France, remains its strongest base, but other European countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy are also contributing to growth.

Expansion Beyond Europe

While Europe remains the core market, Back Market is increasingly investing in international expansion, particularly in the United States.

In several U.S. test markets, the company recorded growth of more than 40 percentage points faster than its global average, suggesting strong potential for future expansion outside Europe.

The strategy reflects a broader ambition to position the platform as a global leader in sustainable technology and circular electronics.

Competition in the Recommerce Sector

Back Market is not the only player benefiting from the recommerce boom. Other European marketplaces are experiencing rapid growth as well. For example, the Austrian platform Refurbed recently surpassed €3 billion in cumulative GMV and announced expansion into more than a dozen additional European markets.

The parallel rise of multiple recommerce platforms suggests that the market has room for several strong competitors, each pursuing different growth strategies. Back Market focuses on global expansion and category diversification, while Refurbed is concentrating on rapid geographic growth across Europe.

The Future of Recommerce in E-commerce

The success of Back Market reflects a broader structural change in consumer electronics purchasing. Advances in cloud computing and artificial intelligence mean that innovation increasingly comes from software and services rather than frequent hardware upgrades. As a result, devices remain functional for longer periods, making refurbished alternatives more attractive to consumers.

At the same time, regulatory initiatives such as the European Union’s “Right to Repair” policies are expected to further strengthen the circular economy by extending product lifecycles and supporting repair ecosystems. Taken together, these trends suggest that recommerce will continue to grow as a major component of the European e-commerce landscape.

Back Market’s strong 2025 performance demonstrates that refurbished electronics are no longer a secondary market. Instead, they are becoming a central pillar of sustainable and value-driven online retail in Europe.
