DHL is expanding the Aschheim parcel center to become the largest parcel location in Germany. The new parcel center will be built adjacent to the existing DHL parcel center in Aschheim. By connecting the two locations via a tunnel for trucks, the largest parcel location in Germany is created. From 2022 onwards, up to 72,000 parcels per hour can be sorted here. Deutsche Post DHL is investing a total of a low three-digit million amount in the new parcel center.
DHL explains that with the new parcel center, they are creating urgently needed additional sorting capacities to supply people in the greater Munich area and in large parts of Upper Bavaria. A parcel market that continues to grow rapidly. "We are not only relying on the most modern sorting technology, but also on a consistently sustainable construction concept," explains Tobias Meyer from Deutsche Post DHL Group.
Moreover, the company is creating around 500 new jobs subject to collective bargaining and social security contributions for the region. Ultimately, the new jobs will be created gradually when the new parcel center goes into operation in 2022.
In line with the sustainability strategy of the Deutsche Post DHL Group, the parcel center is designed in accordance with the latest structural standards and in a particularly sustainable manner. A photovoltaic system on the roof helps the parcel center to be partially self-sufficient with green electricity. The parcel center is to be supplied with heat via climate-friendly district heating provided by a regional energy supplier. The energy supply company produces most of the heat energy from geothermal energy. Partial green roofs are also included in the sustainability concept. This also acts as thermal insulation and thus saves energy in Winter and serves as a heat shield in Summer. In addition, this greening has a sound-absorbing effect.
The sorting capacity of the new parcel center is 40,000 parcels per hour. The connection to the existing parcel center, in which up to 32,000 items can be sorted per hour, is made through a tunnel under Klausnerstrasse with a shared entrance and parking area. Such a combination of two parcel centers is unique in Germany. The largest DHL parcel centers are currently in Obertshausen, near Frankfurt, and in Bochum. You can sort a maximum of 50,000 shipments per hour at a time. DHL is also building another parcel center of the same size in Ludwigsfelde near Berlin. Currently, Deutsche Post DHL Group operates 36 parcel centers in Germany.
