Amazon Belgium is close to becoming a reality after the company announced its plans, earlier this year, to open a logistics center in Belgium. So far, everything indicates that Amazon is expected to begin operations in the country in September.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

While there is still no certainty about the new market, the e-commerce giant is building a logistics center in Antwerp. This is intended to be used as a sorting center for packages arriving from France and Germany before they are shipped to consumers in Belgium.

Even before the start of the construction of the logistics center, Amazon had already begun work on expanding its courier network in Belgium. So far, it has worked with local courier companies. However, with the launch of its own marketplace, Amazon is expected to use its own delivery network.

Amazon previously used its Dutch site only for the sale of e-books. The new site will not only offer the full range of products, but it will also be open to businesses and customers in Belgium.

Expectations about Amazon's launch in Belgium

According to documents that have become known, Amazon already has plans to expand to a total of 5 new countries. One of them is Belgium, where the launch is expected to take place in September.

An interesting point to note is that Belgian retailers will be able to use the Fulfillment by Amazon service. At the same time, Amazon Prime subscriptions will be immediately available from the moment the company arrives in the country, and consumers who already had their subscription through other European sites will be able to continue their membership through Amazon Belgium.

How is Amazon faring globally?

One of the things that many people in the e-commerce business have been concerned about is how the giant Amazon is faring in our post-covid world, which has suffered a drastic reduction in the e-commerce sales, at least in comparison with the Covid pandemic sales peak.

In this regard the company reported 44 percent year-over-year growth in net sales for Q1 2021 and just 7 percent growth for Q1 2022.

That’s obviously a lot lower than usual for Amazon. In fact Compound Capital Advisors said this quarter marks Amazon’s slowest Q1 growth ever. Amazon also reported its first quarterly loss since 2015, largely due to a $7.6 billion loss on its investment in the electric vehicle maker Rivian, which has seen its stock fall by more than half this year.

All in all, even with historically bad results, Amazon seems driven into a global domination policy. And we should expect more launches in Europe and Eurasia, after Belgium, before the end of 2022.

By our partners at LogiCommerce - The B2B sector is undergoing a digital transformation, and the eCommerce is the ideal channel for them to save on operating costs, reduce management time and to grow faster.

Productivity is the key to profitability. This is why B2B companies are turning to the online sales channel to make purchases more cost-effective and efficient.

B2B eCommerce platforms provide fast, easy, and real-time access to data and updates on inventory, product catalogs, and much more to improve daily workflows and make them more accurate since all the information is centralized in one place thanks to the online channel. eCommerce also makes it easier to track results and measure KPIs.

So, what features should you consider when digitizing your B2B?

Personalized shopping cart and product catalog

Providing easy access to your products and creating a seamless checkout will save your customers time and enhance their experience. In the B2B sector, it is particularly important to present your catalog in a clear way showing all the information related to your products such as images and/or videos, instructions, product descriptions, price, shipping method, return policy, and reference number, and others.

Customized Catalog per user group: Configure the catalog according to the user or user groups.

Minimum Order Quantity: Define the minimum and multiple order quantities according to customers or groups.

Shopping Cart Detail: Break down all taxes, shipping costs, and costs associated with the payment method in the shopping cart and sales documents.

B2B Payment Methods: Provide different payment conditions and methods based on customers or groups.

Manual orders: Place orders on behalf of your customers easily with the Drag & Drop feature.

Prices and pricing policy

B2B pricing can be complex, so it is important that the platform you work with, allows you to configure rates, prices and discounts based on customers, customer groups, countries, and areas. Pricing should also reflect bulk purchasing options since this type of business model tends to buy in large quantities, so it's useful to offer discounts based on the volume of the order.

List Pricing Policy: Configure rates based on customers or groups and countries or areas.

Pricing Policies: Define product prices by ranges calculated based on the percentage of variation, the general price or a specific customization.

Geolocation Pricing: Configure specific prices according to the geographic location of the customers.

Advanced Pricing Policy: Targeted pricing for specific customers or geographic areas in a multicurrency system.

Pricing policy by Quantity: Set the base and offer prices for product quantity ranges (units).

Sales agent management

Most B2B businesses have Sales Agents who manage several customers, make them special offers, place orders for them, etc. What if you could assign these Sales Agents to existing customer accounts in your eCommerce? This way, they will have an overview of the orders of each of their assigned customers and will be able to prepare carts for them or even make purchases on their behalf. You can also assign commissions to your Sales Agents.

Shipping and logistics

B2B companies have demanding delivery needs, especially shipping to several locations, splitting expeditions, and sending products from suppliers and warehouses. By using drop shipping, you will increase the delivery speed as well as shipping from different logistics centers.

Multi-expedition: Generate multiple shipments of an order based on different logistic criteria such as warehouses, shipping carrier, and delivery times.

Logistic Centers: Assign your warehouses to several logistics centers to effectively manage your deliveries.

Warehouse Stock Rules: Set up the supply of stock from another warehouse if the linked warehouse with the highest priority does not have stock.

Pre Order Products: Allow customers to pre-order upcoming products that are unavailable for immediate delivery and automate order processes according to your business rules.

Warehouse Conditions: Define the geographical areas of influence of each warehouse to cover your shipments.

User experience

User experience is one of the most valued elements nowadays when selling products or service online. B2B customer experience should be as similar as possible to that of B2C; short learning curve, responsive web, user-friendly interface, and quality content. An eCommerce facilitates the opportunity for B2B's to sell and buy from any location and through multiple channels, offering highly personalized support and guiding the customer through the entire purchasing process.

Customer experience is dramatically improved thanks to 24/7 accessibility to the online store, better product presentation because of the opportunity of incorporating images and videos, more detailed information, and payment and delivery methods flexibility.

Repetitive Order Processing: Facilitate the ordering process with maximum efficiency by letting your customer repeat previous orders in only 1-click.

Bulk Purchases: Allow your customers to quickly buy a list of products for each category, brand, or campaign.

Advanced discounts segmentation and targeting: Customize shopping experiences through advanced discounts segmentation and targeting.

Order tracking: Let your customers follow orders from their personal area or through a configurable tracking widget.

Stock alerts: Send automatic emails to the list of customers that signed up for out-of-stock notifications when a product is back in stock

It's time for your B2B to start selling

LogiCommerce is the Headless eCommerce platform that helps you to reduce operational costs and improve your B2B & B2Cmanagement by connecting all your sales channels with a fully integrated solution and a single Control Panel.

MBE Worldwide has recently succeeded in acquiring a majority stake in the GEL Proximity platform, the last-mile service provider born in Italy and specialized in e-commerce.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Why GEL Proximity?

GEL Proximity is a platform dedicated exclusively to last-mile services. To this end, it operates with a technological connector that allows it to offer consumers an impressive diversity of pick-up points throughout Italy.

As a spin-off from Politecnico di Milano, in 2020 GEL Proximity became a fully owned company. The main objective is to significantly improve the sustainability and growth of e-commerce in the country.

With an approach based on urban logistics and oriented towards the reduction of pollutant emissions and environmental impact in general, GEL Proximity is committed to the optimization of the parcel delivery and collection system.

A strategic acquisition

The acquisition of a majority stake in GEL Proximity by MBE Worldwide represents a strategic step in its growth. This is because the development of the GEL Proximity platform will enable MBE Worldwide to strengthen its current competitive position as both a commercial and logistics platform for businesses.

In this sense, they have considered that the combination of one of the world's leading e-commerce platforms and an extensive network of service centers is what will make MBE Worldwide a unique alternative on the international scene. This will allow them to improve the services offered to their customers and, in turn, to better satisfy their own customers.

According to MBE Worldwide, its goal will be to facilitate access to GEL Proximity's logistics services. This, through innovative and adaptable technology, with the understanding that today, the last mile represents the most sensitive phase of the entire distribution chain.

Google Chrome aims at becoming smarter and more efficient in its results, by using advanced Machine Learning. With the main objective of making its Chrome browser more useful - and providing users with secure and adapted browsing - Google is incorporating new features that the company claims, will make the search engine much more intelligent.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Google Chrome Machine Learning

To this end, Google will continue to make progress in the implementation of machine learning. Some of the new features that have been announced in this regard are:

Reducing annoying ads

Through Chrome's Safe Browsing feature, Google has reported that it is now able to identify 2.5 times more sites that are potentially malicious. This is thanks to a machine learning model that protects users more.

Adaptive button

On the other hand, after a year of testing, Google Chrome's adaptive button has finally been made official. It is a button that will use machine learning to adjust the navigation toolbar in real time. This will allow users to be shown the action that is most useful at each moment of their search.

Whether the user wants to do a voice search, open a new tab or share a link, Chrome will be able to learn which option each user uses most at each moment of the day, adapting to their habits and then offering customized adjustments.

The button will be available to users soon. However, in a short time, each user will be capable of activating it manually using Chrome's experimental functions.

Less interrupted browsing

Finally, Google has also announced that in the next version of Chrome, notification permission requests will be much less annoying, to make browsing more convenient for users.

Through machine learning, Chrome will be able to predict when it might be interesting for a person to be prompted by an app to receive notifications. This takes into account how the user has previously acted in response to such requests.

Formerly known as Clearbank, Clearco is an e-commerce investment company based in Canada. Over the course of its history, it has financed more than 7,000 e-commerce companies and is estimated to have invested close to €3 billion for this purpose.

Germany becomes the seventh market in which Clearco operates. It joins Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia. In addition, the company says that more markets are on the horizon for the current year, especially in Central Europe, Western Europe, and the Northern countries.

Clearco's interest in Germany

Germany is considered one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe. But it also stands out as a country with a large and dynamic start-up sector.

In terms of e-commerce in particular, Germany is one of the most important markets in Europe, along with the UK and France. However, according to the latest data, online commerce in the country has stagnated since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

The future plans

Just a few days ago, Clearco cut around 10% of its workforce in Dublin. The investment company could be affected by the current financial depression, especially in the technology sector, where several firms have made staff cuts, as was the case with the two giants Netflix and Gorillas.

In any case, Clearco's expansion plans continue. It is targeting a funding round led by Softbank in July 2021. At that time, the company managed to raise around $215 million in growth capital. As such, the company expects to continue its growth across Europe this year.

Interview to Simone De Ruosi, CEO at Go Global Ecommerce.

What is a Merchant of Record (MoR)?

A MoR is a legal entity that acts as a reseller between a Brand (vendor) and its clients in an e-commerce transaction. The MoR is fiscally and legally responsible for the sales to final consumers around the globe.

What difficulties do American merchants face when selling internationally?

USA is a huge market with 1 currency, 1 culture, 1-2 languages, 1 legal and fiscal framework. When it comes to going international, the complexity increases as those factors are multiplied by the number of countries. However, in many cases all the effort put into selling in other countries is rewarded by much smaller markets and figures than the US ones.
Therefore, companies are tempted to avoid the jump.

How does the merchant of record model work?
It is very easy: the MoR manages thousands of B2C sales to final customers; the brand raises a monthly B2B invoice to the MoR. Risks and complexities are left to the MoR.

What are the benefits that American companies get when working with a Merchant of Record?
They can concentrate on the core business - building and marketing their products - thinking in a “borderless strategy”. The MoR can be used as a business accelerator.

What types of businesses can benefit from an MoR and why?
Any kind of business can benefit from not having headaches, risks, and costs in non-core activities. However, highly regulated businesses like spirits and electronics can take even more advantage.

How can a merchant of record improve American companies’ relationships with their clients?
Being fiscally and legally transparent, compliant with the local regulations, and offering localized checkouts increases the shopping experience and trust. It is proven that this increases the conversion rate and return rate.

What are the key differences between a Merchant of Record, a Seller of Record and a payment service provider?
The scope gets narrower.
The MoR is a re-seller who takes full legal and fiscal responsibility for the sales.
The SoR does not re-sell to customers; it helps provide payments and taxes management, but still, it acts on behalf of the Brand.
The PSP is a third party that allows Merchants to collect payments. It is just a means to transfer money from customers and does not intervene in any fiscal/legal operation.

How can a merchant of record help companies to reduce legal risks?

Well, legal risks are down to 0. The responsibility of the sales is on the MoR; the vendor/brand is only responsible for its products toward the MoR.

Why is working with a Merchant of Record entity the preferred option for American companies seeking to sell in Europe?EU is a very complex market: different languages, habits, cultures, and fiscal and legal framework.
This means huge complexity and risks to fail in performing fiscal/legal activities or giving poor experience to customers. An MoR is indeed a business accelerator.

Ranpak presented its next generation of Cut’it!TM EVO in-line packaging machine during the LogiMAT 2022 at Stuttgart during this past 31st – June 2nd.

The International Trade Show for Intralogistics Solutions and Process Management was a perfect scenario for Ranpak to showcase their most recent technological advancement in logistic solutions: the Cut’it!™ Evo in-line packaging machine. And we had the opportunity to interview Mr. Paul Spronken, Ranpak’s product manager for Automation, to learn more about the Cut’it!™ EVO technology.

Cut’it! TM EVO, a new generation filled with possibilities

Ranpak's next-generation machines present a combination of upgrades and new functionalities aimed at one objective: to make logistics easier and more efficient. In this sense, Mr. Sproken explained to us the in-detail capabilities and possibilities offered by the Cut’it!TM EVO technology.

Let’s start by defining what is the Cut’it! TM EVO in-line packaging machine and how long has it been in the market?

Paul: Cut’it!TM EVO has been installed at customer sites for several years. The version we are demonstrating at LogiMAT is the completely redesigned next-generation solution, designed to meet ever-changing market trends.

Once products are packed, Cut’it!TM EVO determines the highest filling point of the carton, cuts excess cardboard, folds it to reduce the height, and automatically applies a glued lid resulting in a box ready for palletizing and shipping.

The result is a smaller box; faster, leaner operations; and lower shipping costs with optimized box sizes. Easy-to-open parcels with tear-off strips further enhance the customer unboxing experience.

Cut’it!TMEVO is a flexible and highly efficient solution that enables companies to accelerate their sustainable packaging journey, which includes the ability to pack an average of 25% more boxes per truckload, thereby reducing the number of trucks needed by as much as 25%.

Paul Spronken

And what is new in this generation of Cut’it!TM EVO?

Paul: In this completely redesigned next-generation solution, a number of overall performance improvements have been made to the system to improve reliability and productivity. Additionally:

Online access to real-time performance data for insights into the operation is now available, and online assistance enables technical support to directly access the system when needed.

Integrated, laser-based measuring devices detect bulky, overfilled boxes, handling them selectively to prevent the system from jamming.

The updated, modern design, including its large sliding doors, provides transparency and easy access to all areas of the machine for optimal maintenance.

The 12-inch color user interface, which can be operated from either side of the system, and integrated cameras also make it easier for operators to manage the operation of the equipment and ensure optimum quality.

For problem resolution and quality assurance purposes, the camera system can store up to 40 hours’ worth of video.

Can Cut’it!TM EVO be operated as a standalone component, or does it need to be part of a larger integrated system?

Paul: Cut’it!TMEVO is part of a typical end-of-line setup in a packing operation. The end-of-line configuration begins with Ranpak’s Form’it! TM packaging machine which erects the box.

Conveyors then transport boxes to the packing area and box closing machine. Automatic printing and affixing of a label to the box completes the packing process, and the box is now ready to be moved to the shipping module.

A unique Ranpak technology

Is the Cut’it!TM EVO is a technology developed exclusively by Ranpak, or is it a new industry-wide technology?

Paul: It is exclusively ours. The Cut’it!TM EVO in-line packaging machine was developed leveraging Ranpak’s 50 years of experience in packaging together with ongoing feedback from customers using our equipment in the field.

This information enables our engineering team to ensure ongoing improvements to performance and to be able to adapt each machine exactly to customer requirements. This often includes recommendations about third-party components that can be integrated for improved performance, including a variety of conveyors, robotics solutions, and more.

One good example is our partnership with Caja Robotics, which provides complimentary technology for order fulfillment. Together, these two solutions optimize fulfillment processes starting when e-commerce orders are placed and received for picking, to packing and shipping when the order is ready, thereby combining depalletization, picking, and packing capabilities.

Other partners are engaged as needed or as dictated by the customer’s unique requirements or integrator preferences. This approach positions Ranpak as the preeminent end-of-line expert for distribution centers of all types and sizes.

In a perfect packing world, what would be the ultimate Ranpak automated packing line configuration? How much is provided by Ranpak and how much by partners? Does Ranpak act as the integrator for the final installation?

Paul: There is no perfect solution that meets the needs of every customer. Each Ranpak solution is configured based on an in-depth examination of each customer’s requirements which can range from single to multi-line configurations in any type of facility. The final configuration is implemented in close cooperation with the customer’s integrator of choice.

Decisions are based on throughput, cushioning needs, and types of orders being fulfilled, in consideration of which Ranpak will select the right type of solution, including Form’it!TM, AutoFill, Cut’it! or Flap’it, among others.

Can you explain how lids are sourced and whether the zip strip is included in the preconfigured top or something added by Ranpak?

Paul: Ranpak works together with local corrugated suppliers in order to create this packaging concept. Zip strips, or other easy to open solutions, can be part of the implementation, depending on customer requirements. In order to facilitate the easy return of shipments, a lid with a tear strip and a glue strip can also be used.

Are boxes limited to one size?

Paul: No. The search for the customer’s perfect box size is part of our consultation process. We can supply machines that process boxes ranging from 150x230mm up to 450x650mm with our Cut’itTM EVO. For larger boxes, our Cut’it! XXL is the machine of choice.

What maintenance is needed?

Paul: Cut’it!TM EVO is easy to operate and maintain. Daily maintenance is limited to the cleaning of the machine. The operator also needs to refill the lid blanks, while the autofill option on our hot glue melter keeps glue at the precise level.

Glue refill and knife change need to be performed from once a week up to a few times per week, depending on the usage level. For longer maintenance intervals, Ranpak offers full preventive maintenance contracts to keep the machine in perfect condition. These are based on 1, 2, or multiple visits per year, depending upon the machine usage.

Turkey's famous e-commerce platform, Trendyol, arrives for the first time in Europe through a launch in Germany. This marks Trendyol's first market outside its home country, while plans are being developed to also launch in London, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg in the coming year.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Trendyol is characterized as an online marketplace that also offers its own food and grocery delivery solution, as well as its own digital wallet. Currently, the company has more than 30 million customers and more than 260,000 sellers.

Expansion plans in Europe had already been announced in 2020. By August 2021, the platform had raised $1.5 billion from Softbank. This made it the first "decacorn" in Turkey - whose value is considered to be over $10 billion - In addition, Alibaba had invested almost 300 million euros, acquiring a majority stake.

Trendyol's entry into Germany

In accordance with Trendyol, its mobile app has been downloaded almost one million times in Germany today. At the same time, according to Similar Web, it is the second fastest growing fashion platform in the country as of February 2022.

In this regard, the German market is expected to generate more than 400 million euros by the end of the year. It is also expected to reach a turnover of more than 3 billion euros by 2025 in Germany.

The branch that the platform will open in Germany will first focus on fashion but plans to offer new categories in the future. To achieve these goals, it will open an office with more than 200 employees located in the city of Berlin.

With Germany expected to represent the starting point for the platform across Europe, around 65,000 square meters of warehouse space on the continent is expected to become available over the next two years to support expansion into local markets.

Google plans new features aimed at e-commerce. The decision was made public by Google and other platforms belonging to the Alphabet group, like YouTube, which has become a staple for customers as a place to review a product before making a purchase decision.

In this context, Google has been looking for new possibilities to improve the shopping experience on the search engine.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

With this in mind, Google has stated that, in the coming months, advertisers will be able to display more visual ads in the Shopping SERP functionality for the U.S. audience.

Also, understanding the value that the product touch experience still has for many people, it is estimated that it won't be long before 3D images of products can be displayed in Google Search’s SERPs.

The future of e-commerce with machine learning

In an increasingly competitive digital world, specialists have realized that the best way to grow a business is to combine data and marketing expertise with automatic learning tools.

In this sense, Maximum Performance campaigns are thought of as a powerful alternative to appear in front of customers when they are on Google channels. This way, advertisers can use these campaigns to increase their overall conversions.

Google's news for the e-commerce sector in 2022

In order to offer new alternatives to advertisers, Google has announced new features oriented to e-commerce that aim to help businesses optimize their sales and increase their conversion rates:

Expanded campaign management support: this will be a possibility both in the Google Ads mobile app and in Search Ads 360.

New experimentation tools: with the aim of identifying the effect that Maximum Performance campaigns have on incremental conversions.

Burst" campaigns: these are developed during specific periods of time in order to reach the objectives of an online store at the most important moments of the sales season.

New statistics: access to detailed information regarding consumers and auctions, in order to understand what factors drive performance at any given moment.

Support for sales goals: Google will seek to support store goals, optimizing online sales but also physical store sales through local actions.

Scoring: finally, new optimization scores and recommendations will be implemented so that stores can learn how to improve their campaigns.

Google continues to uphold its goal of being the most useful company in the world. However, it understands the importance of making its products secure as well. Therefore, it will be adding releases that will help users control their privacy in their online experience, such as My Ad Center.

The startup Kubbo Smart Logistics has recently announced its first international launch through the start of its activity in Italy. Having started its work in Barcelona in 2019, is now looking to expand its logistics digitization model for e-commerce brands.

Do you want to know more about international commerce, e-commerce, and also get all the tips and news that might give your company an edge? Subscribe to Cross-Border Magazine and get your digital copy now for free!

Kubbo's objective is to transfer its integrated sales process management model to Italy. It is a fulfillment service that offers storage, picking, and packing services and same-day and next-day shipping alternatives.

The growth of online commerce in Italy

Part of Kubbo's interest in expanding in Italy is related to the fact that it is one of the most promising markets for online sales in the future.

Before the pandemic, the online commerce sector in Italy moved more than 16,000 M€ per year, in a market where 72% of consumers say they usually shop online. Today, Italy has an online commerce growth rate of 20% per year, compared to an estimated 10% for the European Union as a whole. This makes it one of the fastest-growing regions in Europe.

The arrival of Kubbo in Italy

In this context, Kubbo begins its operations in the country through the implementation of a 25,000 m2 logistics center located in Milan. It will be operated by a specialist in the sector and is expected to have major Italian online retail brands as clients in the coming months.

In Spain, the company has four of its own centers in Barcelona and Madrid, from which it manages the logistics of its clients, which are e-commerce SMEs. With its software, what it allows is full integration with the online store software, tracking the entire delivery process in real time.

Now, Kubbo's goal is to bring this innovative logistics management model to Italy, thus becoming a reference partner for brands looking to grow in the e-commerce sector.
