PayPal payment service most offered in Italian e-commerce

PayPal Payment service is offered in 93% of Italian online stores, according to research presented by ecommerceDB. 

The research took into account the top 100 online stores in 43 different countries, looking also at countries outside of Europe. 

Australia scored high as well, with 92% of stores using PayPal. According to ecommerceDB most western European countries and the US rank relatively high in the use of PayPal as a payment option, while Asian and Eastern European countries have lower ranks.

PayPal over 80% acceptance rate in Europe  

The report measured the top 100 online stores in Italy, by net sales. And according to its results, 93% of the Italian top 100 e-commerce sites offer payment via PayPal. 

The number 2 in the ranking, Australia, follows closely, with 92% of stores using PayPal as a payment service.  While Germany, Spain, and Austria fill in the positions 3,4,5 with 88% for Germany, 86% for Spain and again, 86% for Austria. 

According to the numbers of this report, PayPal in Europe has an acceptance of over 80%, making it the main online payment option for the region.

PayPal payment service in America

PayPal payment service usage in the United States of America is well above 86% of e-commerce websites. 

And although the payment service market is far more diverse in the United States than in Europe, PayPal is second as an online payment option - below Visa-MasterCard - as it accounts for 14% of payments in the United States. 

In that same category, PayPal fares far better in the UK where it accounts for  38% of online payments, 38% in France, and a surprising 41% in Italy.

PayPal key statistics

✔️ PayPal generated $21.4 billion in revenue in 2020, a 20.9 percent increase year-on-year.

✔️ PayPal also increased its net profit by 75 percent year-on-year, to $4.2 billion in 2020.

✔️ Over 15 billion transactions were completed in 2020 on PayPal, accounting for $936 billion in transaction volume.

✔️ 337 million users and merchants use PayPal.

These numbers seem to confirm that during the past 2021, PayPal has consolidated its role as one of the main global payment services for e-commerce.
