UK Top 500 E-commerce Report 2020

Annually, Internet Retailing publishes the UK Top 500 online and multichannel retailers in the United Kingdom, featuring the best-performing shops in the United Kingdom.

The list focuses on both retail brands and consumers brands selling directly to their audience. The list is based on a set of performance metrics, like revenue, store network, web traffic, merchandise and brand engagement.

This performance-based ranking clusters the top 500 e-commerce businesses in statistically similar groups. On top, we can find the 'Elite retailers', that performand at an 'exceptional level' across all dimensions. In this edition of the Top500, only six players received this rank. Of these, only Amazon has been ranked 'Elite' in all six reports published to date.

Fashion is popular

Brands and retailers active in the apparel or fashion accessories are most common in the top 500. 40% of the retailers sell clothing and fashion accessories. Other popular categories are Homeware (20%) and jewelry (16%). A majority of the brands and retailers sell third-party label products (62%). Over 36% sell mostly own-label products. The remaining players operate online marketplaces.

Popular software: Salesforce and Magento

The most popular e-commerce platforms used by the UK top 500 are Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Magento Enterprise. Respectively 16% and 14.6% of the leading online retailers in the United Kingdom uses these platforms. Other popular platforms are Amplience (9.4%), Hybris (9.4%), IBM Websphere (9.2%) and Oracle Commerce (6.2%).
