Amazon officially launched its marketplace in the Netherlands. In the past, it offered only e-books and e-readers. The Amazon.nl platform now offers a greater product selection, intensifying the competition with local players such as Bol.com, Coolblue and Wehkamp.
In preparation for the Amazon launch, Dutch marketplace Bol.com already added a fashion category to its assortment. It has also changed seller fees in some of their product categories.
History and functionalities
As part of the Amazon.nl launch, the marketplace’s Prime functionality will become available to Dutch consumers. Customers pay €2.99 per month for free delivery on products sold and shipped by Amazon. They will also get access to Prim video streaming service, Twitch Prime and unlimited photo storage. This is a lot more than Amazon’s main competitor Bol.com, where customers pay €9.99 per month for a smaller offer.
Before its fully localised Dutch launch, Amazon serviced the Dutch consumer through its (translated version of the) German site since 2016. In 2014, the e-book and e-reader shop was launched. Since 2017, Dutch consumers have been able to participate in the Prime program. Since 2018, the highly preferred Dutch payment method iDeal was offered for the first time. Despite that, it is not available for all products yet.
