Michael Geraets, Founder and Chairman of MyCargoGate Group, shares his perspective on leadership, technology, and what it takes to build trust and resilience in cross-border logistics.

A career driven by complexity and problem-solving

For Michael, the appeal of logistics has always been its dynamic nature. No two days are the same, and every shipment presents a new challenge to solve. “What I love most about my role is the constant problem-solving,” he explains. “Finding the most efficient and effective solutions, whether that’s optimising routes, coordinating complex shipments, or resolving unexpected issues, is incredibly rewarding.”

That challenge is amplified by the international scope of logistics. Cross-border trade brings together different cultures, regulatory environments, and operational standards. For Michael, this complexity is not a barrier but a source of motivation. “Engaging with people from different cultures and navigating global regulations adds a fascinating dimension to the work,” he says.

This global perspective is central to MyCargoGate’s role in the market. Operating across both Switzerland and the European Union, the company bridges two regulatory systems that are often treated separately. “Our position allows us to help customers remain compliant on both sides,” Michael explains. “That means fewer risks, fewer penalties, and greater confidence when shipping internationally.”

What it takes to succeed in freight forwarding today

According to Michael, succeeding in freight forwarding requires a balanced combination of adaptability, technical capability, and operational discipline. In an industry where conditions can change quickly, agility is essential. “You need to be able to pivot fast,” he notes. “Being adaptable ensures operations keep running smoothly and customers remain confident, even when circumstances shift.”

Technology now plays a central role in enabling that adaptability. Digital tools are no longer optional but fundamental to modern logistics. “Staying technologically up to date is more important than ever,” Michael says. At MyCargoGate Group, technology is embedded into the business model, supporting automation, data accuracy, and process efficiency.

This technology-first mindset is part of what Michael describes as a “Swiss quality approach.” By prioritising IT systems and automation, MyCargoGate is able to deliver tangible benefits for customers across borders. “Automation reduces manual error, improves compliance, and creates consistency,” he explains. “That ultimately protects our customers.”

However, technology alone is not enough. Strong communication and interpersonal skills remain vital, especially when working across borders. Clear, consistent communication helps align clients, partners, and internal teams, reducing friction and avoiding costly misunderstandings. “Logistics is still a people business,” Michael says. “Technology supports it, but trust makes it work.”

A deep understanding of international regulations and customs procedures is equally critical. Operating across Switzerland and the EU requires precision and discipline. “Compliance is non-negotiable,” Michael explains. “Our role is to keep customers compliant and penalty-free, even as regulations evolve.”

Lessons learned and advice for the next generation

Reflecting on his career, Michael is open about the lessons learned along the way. His advice to his younger self centres on confidence and courage. “Trust your vision and embrace brave decision-making,” he says. “Progress often comes from taking calculated risks.”

One area he highlights in particular is early investment in technology. While proud of MyCargoGate Group’s journey and market position, Michael acknowledges that moving faster in adopting automation and IT could have accelerated growth even further. “In logistics, innovation and efficiency create real competitive advantages,” he explains. “Being early with technology gives you room to scale with confidence.”

At the same time, he views every decision as part of a longer journey. “Each choice, whether bold or cautious, contributes to learning,” he reflects. “What matters is staying focused on long-term value.”

A pragmatic approach to digitalisation

Michael’s leadership style is reflected even in the small details of his daily work. Asked about his favourite object on his desk, he laughs. “I’d like to say it’s a picture of my family,” he admits, “but in reality, my desk is very minimalistic.” A laptop and a few screens are all he needs to stay connected with colleagues, partners, and customers across markets.

Digital tools have significantly improved his day-to-day work. Platforms for digital air cargo booking have streamlined quotation processes, improved accuracy, and enabled faster decisions. “Access to real-time information changes how you operate,” Michael explains. “It allows you to manage risk proactively rather than reactively.”

Despite this progress, he recognises that digital adoption remains uneven across the industry. Some partners are still hesitant to embrace automation. Encouraging that shift is something Michael sees as part of his leadership responsibility. “Education and collaboration are essential,” he says. “Technology isn’t about replacing people, it’s about enabling better outcomes.”

Looking ahead

As global trade continues to grow more complex, Michael believes trust, compliance, and automation will define successful logistics models. For companies shipping internationally, reducing risk and maintaining regulatory confidence are now strategic priorities.

“If you ship globally, you need partners you can trust,” Michael says. “You need systems that reduce risk, maintain compliance, and support growth.”

Under Michael’s leadership, MyCargoGate Group has built a strong foundation across Switzerland and Europe, while also expanding its footprint in India.

The region now plays a significant role in the company’s growth, home to both a dedicated logistics team and a highly skilled, fast-growing technology division. This integration strengthens MyCargoGate’s global capabilities, combining operational expertise with innovative digital development to drive efficiency and transparency across cross-border freight forwarding.

Under his leadership, MyCargoGate continues to focus on bridging regulatory environments, investing in technology, and applying Swiss quality standards to cross-border logistics. “When you combine experience with automation and discipline,” Michael concludes, “you create solutions that allow businesses to move confidently across borders.”
