DeliveryDelivery and return shipping rates differ across industries. Sellers in jewellery, electronics and the medical/Rx industries ship smaller packages than the industries that sell products like books, food/grocery. The differences between the industries are huge. Following the shipping benchmarks report by Shippo, the size of a parcel is a vital determiner of how much a merchant would spend on shipping. The report shows how much e-commerce industries spend on shipping.

When looking at high- and low-scoring industries, we can see the following average spendings in percentages per category.

 Highest shipping spends per industry:

  • Books: 18.76%
  • Food and Grocery: 18.43%
  • Toys: 16.47%

Lowest shipping spends per industry:

  • Jewellery: 8.28%
  • Medical and Rx: 9.41%
  • Electronics: 9.61%
Shipping across border

Cars, electronics and the fashion industry are known for shipping across borders. Even though international shipping is growing, it is still less common for industries like health and wellness, medical and Rx, and food and grocery to sell cross-border. These industries are selling to domestic buyers more often.

Industries with the highest international shipping rates:

  • Auto: 22.6%
  • Electronics: 18.87%
  • Apparel: 16.94%

Industries with the lowest international shipping rates:

  • Food and Grocery: 5.03%
  • Health and Wellness: 8.01%
  • Medical and Rx: 8.42%
