A recently leaked code has sparked a wave of speculation in the tech and retail industries: OpenAI is reportedly working on an integration with Shopify to enable purchases directly from ChatGPT, as reported by TestingCatalog. This potential deal would transform the conversational AI platform into a personal shopping assistant capable of processing transactions within the chat, without redirecting the user to external stores.

Specifically, the new code snippet found shows terms such as “buy_now,” prices, shipping, product ratings, and an address called “shopify_checkout_url,” indicating that OpenAI could be integrating a shopping feature directly within the chat.

In other words, imagine you are chatting with ChatGPT about the best computers for programming. Instead of receiving external links, the assistant will present you with options with prices, ratings, and a “Buy now” button. When you click on it, you will be redirected to the Shopify checkout process, all without leaving the ChatGPT environment.

OpenAI as a sales channel?

Although the potential partnership between OpenAI and Shopify has not yet been officially confirmed, this new shopping channel could offer advantages for both users and sellers.

The integration of shopping into ChatGPT could offer a significantly more convenient and efficient experience for users. By allowing purchases to be made directly within the chat, it eliminates the need to switch between platforms or apps.

Additionally, thanks to its ability to understand preferences and conversation history, the assistant can offer highly personalized recommendations. All of this translates into a faster and simplified shopping process that is tailored to the individual needs of each user.

Access to the global network of ChatGPT users

For merchants, this potential integration represents a significant strategic opportunity, as it would give them immediate access to ChatGPT's large user base without the need for complex technical integrations. Furthermore, by interacting directly with customers at the exact moment they express their intent to purchase, it opens the door to significant improvements in conversion rates. All this is complemented by the operational efficiency offered by Shopify's reliable payment system, which facilitates a frictionless implementation.

The integration of OpenAI and Shopify could come at a time of growing competition in the conversational commerce space. Microsoft has launched its “Copilot Merchant Program,” allowing merchants to set up shops within its assistant. Perplexity AI, meanwhile, introduced “Buy with Pro,” offering one-click purchases and an API for merchants.
