E-commerce turnover in Spain increased by 13.7% in 2024

According to the latest data from CNMCData, e-commerce turnover in Spain increased by 13.7% year-on-year to €21,793 million in the first quarter of 2024. 

The sectors of activity with the highest revenues were travel agencies and tour operators, with 10.3 % of total turnover; air transport, with 6.6 %; and clothing, in third place, with 6.3 %.

In the first quarter of 2024, more than 412 million transactions were recorded, up 13.7%. Gaming and betting led the ranking in sales and purchases (7.2%). In terms of geographic segmentation, 41.7 % of revenues went to Spain. The remaining 58.3 % corresponded to purchases made abroad from Spain. 

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is bought from abroad to Spain and from Spain abroad) showed a deficit of 9,974 million euros.

Export and import for Spanish e-commerce

By number of transactions, 35.0 % of purchases and sales were to Spain and 65.0 % to foreign countries. The turnover of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad amounted to 12,707 million euros, 17.6 % more than in the previous year's first quarter. 

94.0 % of purchases from Spain to foreign countries were made in stores located in the European Union. The branch of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to foreign countries was clothing (9.5 %).

Sales from abroad to Spain amounted to 2,733 million euros, 9.2 % more than in the previous year's first quarter. 61.4 % of purchases from abroad came from the European Union. Likewise, the areas of activity related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental, and hotels) accounted for 62.1 % of purchases from abroad with Spain.

E-commerce revenues in Spain rose by 8.2 % year-on-year to 6,354 million euros. Fuels (8.1 %), travel agencies and tour operators (7.7 %), and public administration, taxes, and social security (7.3 %) led the turnover in Spain.
