“670% surge” in AI-driven traffic fuels U.S. 2025 holiday ecommerce boom

U.S. online holiday shopping in 2025 has hit new highs, driven in large part by an extraordinary surge in AI-driven traffic. According to Adobe Analytics, sessions on U.S. retail sites arriving through AI-powered shopping tools and agents increased by approximately 670% on Cyber Monday compared with the previous year.

This spike coincided with record spending. During the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, U.S. consumers spent more than 44 billion dollars online, representing strong year-over-year growth and solidifying the role of AI and mobile shopping in modern ecommerce.

This article explains what lies behind the “670% surge,” why it matters, and what it signals for the future of retail.

What the 670% surge really means

The 670% figure does not mean total online traffic grew sevenfold. Instead, it refers specifically to traffic growth from AI-driven tools, such as generative AI shopping assistants, chatbots, browser extensions, and innovative comparison tools.

In 2024, AI-driven sessions represented a small share of traffic. In 2025, that small base exploded, transforming AI from an experimental channel into a meaningful and unavoidable source of high-intent visitors.

Both third-party AI agents and retailer-owned AI assistants contributed to the spike:

  • Third-party AI tools recommended products, compared prices, summarized reviews, and deep-linked shoppers directly to product pages.
  • Retailer-integrated AI tools provided smarter search, natural-language queries, and personalized product recommendations onsite.

Why AI-driven traffic converts so well

AI-mediated shopping journeys remove many of the traditional friction points typical in e-commerce:

  • Shoppers begin with a specific need or question, and AI tools instantly produce a curated shortlist of relevant products.
  • AI agents filter results by price, discount level, brand, reviews, specifications or availability, creating high-intent traffic.
  • Shoppers rely on AI to navigate complex decisions, especially during holiday promotions where discounts and product variations are overwhelming.
  • Retailers report that AI-sourced sessions tend to convert better than standard traffic channels and show higher engagement metrics.

In short, AI doesn’t simply bring more traffic — it brings better traffic.

How holiday 2025 shopping behavior shifted

The 2025 holiday season shows demand spreading more evenly across the Thanksgiving-to-Monday corridor. Black Friday alone reached nearly $ 12 billion in online sales, while Cyber Monday spending was forecast to exceed $ 14 billion.

AI tools helped redistribute this demand by guiding shoppers to the best times and places to buy, while also smoothing traffic patterns. Instead of a single overwhelming spike, retailers observed more sustained activity over several days.

What the surge means for retailers

Retailers now face a new competitive reality: being AI-ready is becoming as crucial as being mobile-ready was a decade ago.

Key priorities include:

  • Clean and structured product data so AI agents can accurately index and recommend products.
  • Natural-language-capable search tools that allow users to ask fundamental questions instead of relying only on filters.
  • Personalized onsite AI assistants that guide shoppers from discovery to checkout.
  • Dynamic pricing and inventory management are necessary since AI-savvy shoppers expect real-time availability and competitive discounts.

Retailers who ignore AI risk losing visibility in AI-powered product suggestions, missing out on the highest-intent traffic entering the market today.

What this shift means for shoppers

AI-driven holiday shopping offers consumers:

  • Faster and more accurate product discovery.
  • Better comparison of prices, specs, shipping, and return policies across multiple retailers.
  • More efficient deal-hunting during a season defined by promotions.
  • A highly mobile-friendly experience, as many AI tools are integrated directly into smartphones and apps.

For shoppers, the result is less time browsing and more time finding the ideal deal — tailored to preferences, budget, and timing.

The 670% surge in AI-driven traffic during Cyber Monday 2025 marks a turning point for U.S. ecommerce. AI has evolved from a niche add-on to a central pillar of holiday shopping behavior. Retailers that invest now in AI-powered search, personalization, product data, and dynamic operations will capture the most growth in the seasons ahead.

At the same time, consumers benefit from faster, more innovative, more efficient paths to purchase. AI is no longer an accessory in e-commerce — it is becoming the foundation of how holiday shopping works.
