MediaMarkt doubled its third-party revenue up to 137 million euros. Over the next three years, external trade volume is expected to reach 750 million euros.

The data comes from Ceconomy’s publication of MediaMarkt figures for the fiscal year 2022/2023. Ceconomy is MediaMarkt and Saturn's parent company, and overall, it saw a significant increase in revenue, up by 4.7% to 22.2 billion euros.

MediaMarkt allowed external sellers in its home and top market, Germany, about two years ago, with Austria and Spain following later.

While marketplace sales were 65 million euros in the fiscal year 2021-2022, they reached 72 million euros more in the just-concluded fiscal year, an increase of 111 percent. The GMV reached 137 million euros, expected to multiply several times in the next three years.

JD.com wants to buy Mediamarket and Saturn

JD.com is reportedly interested in acquiring a significant shareholding in Ceconomy Group, the parent company of MediaMarkt and Saturn, German magazine Manager Magazin has reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The possible entry of the Chinese company as a significant shareholder led to a notable rally in the German group's shares, which soared by almost 16% last Wednesday.

The German magazine claims that JD.com has been in talks with Ceconomy shareholders Haniel and Meridian. Currently, Haniel has a 16.7% stake in Ceconomy, and Meridian has an 11.1% stake. As the report notes, Haniel would not be opposed to selling its stake. However, it has declined to comment on the matter for now.

JD.com is also said to be in talks with Beisheim and Schmidt-Ruthenbeck. According to the information, the three together own just under one-third of Ceconomy's shares. If all shares were to be transferred to JD.com, a takeover bid (IPO) would be mandatory. Another 29% of the company is owned by Mediamarkt co-founder Erich Kellerhals, 6.7% is held by Freenet and the rest are scattered shares.
