At Cross-Border Magazine, we love having insightful conversations over a good cup of coffee (or tea). In this issue, we sat down with Rutger Vonk, Senior Business Development Manager at Salesupply, a company that specializes in customer service and fulfillment solutions for e-commerce businesses worldwide.
At Salesupply, our mission is to provide e-commerce brands with flexible, scalable, and high-quality customer service and fulfillment solutions. We believe that great customer experience shouldn’t be limited by borders.Rutger shares his take on the evolving landscape of e-commerce customer service, the importance of cultural adaptation, and the role of technology in shaping the future of the industry.
1) Coffee or tea? When and how?
I like to start my day with tea to keep my cortisol levels in check. Later in the day, I switch to coffee however never more than three cups, but usually just two. I always drink it black, no sugar or milk. In the evening, I sometimes go back to tea. It’s all about balance!
2) Can you tell a bit about Salesupply and your role within the company?
Salesupply is a Dutch company with a global presence, operating in Europe, the UK, and the US. As a Senior Business Development Manager, I focus on acquiring new customers, particularly in German-speaking markets, while also managing Dutch clients. We specialize in flexible fulfillment and customer care services for e-commerce businesses, helping brands expand seamlessly into new markets.
3) How does Salesupply differentiate itself from other customer service providers in the e-commerce industry, and what unique value does it bring to its clients?
What makes us unique is our pay-per-use model, which allows clients to start small. This flexibility enables businesses to scale their operations cross-border without being tied to large commitments. Another key differentiator is our use of strictly native-speaking customer service agents who understand local cultures and languages, ensuring high-quality service that resonates with customers.
4) In order to respond to the cultural differences and specific service expectations of consumers, how does Salesupply adapt its customer-centric strategy?
Cultural sensitivity is key for Salesupply. Having native agents allows us to tailor communication styles to each market. For instance, while picking up the phone as an agent with a casual “yo” might work for a skateboard brand in the U.S., it wouldn’t be well received in Germany (this is an actual example). We adjust our tone and language accordingly to ensure that every interaction feels natural and appropriate.
5) What common challenges do businesses face when managing customer service on an international scale, and how does Salesupply address these obstacles?
Companies often struggle with recruiting suitable agents in unfamiliar regions and maintaining consistent service quality across markets. At Salesup-ply, we overcome these challenges by having trained agents on our payroll who are ready to deliver high-quality service from day one. We also use a robust quality management system to monitor and maintain performance standards.
6) Many companies are hesitant to outsource their customer service operations. What are some common misconceptions about outsourcing, and how does Salesupply overcome these to deliver value?
There’s a common fear that outsourcing means losing control over quality and product knowledge. To address this, we encourage clients to start small—for example, by outsourcing only one market or one channel (phone / email). This allows them to test our services with minimal risk. We also ensure transparency, provide references and give the client a role in the training of our agents to build trust and demonstrate our expertise.
7) What innovative trends do you see in customer service for e-commerce?
Technology is becoming more and more important in customer service. AI and chatbots are becoming more advanced, handling simple inquiries like “Where’s my order?” with ease. I also see a strong growth in the launch of AI-Voicebots and they become better very quickly. This frees up human agents to focus on more complex or sensitive topics. That said, for high-value purchases or technical products or B2B questions, customers still prefer speaking with a real person.
8) Finally, how do you expect Salesupply to adapt to these trends and evolve its customer service approach in the coming years?
Looking at the future, we are embracing AI while ensuring that our agents are well-trained to work alongside all these technologies from various suppliers. We are also seeing a strong increase in B2B customer care requests, meaning that we help businesses manage their communication with other companies (their clients). One of the things that makes us unique is that we can offer native agents in 24 languages that deliver high-quality advice and support via phone. Our agents know the local e-Commerce market, trends and regulations.
Our goal is to stay ahead of the curve in customer service innovation while maintaining the personal touch that customers value.
